Consequence: Moses prohibited from entering Canaan

The people knew Moses’ staff had imbued power from God; but only God Himself could cause a rock to hear Moses speaking and respond. In Num 20.10-11 instead of obeying God and providing the people another demonstration of Divine sustainance for them, Moses in vexation, disobeyed on two accounts. Instead of speaking to the rock He spoke to the people; and instead of telling the rock to yield its water Moses struck the rock twice with his staff. Though God honored Moses’ staff by enabling the power He had endued it with to obtain water from the rock, because Moses failed to believe God would do what He said about the water, and because he failed to obey God in speaking to the rock, God punished him and Aaron by restricting them from the Promised Land.
