What is “baptism”? What does it mean to “be baptised”?
“Baptism” means to be dunked or immersed into something, usually water.
The word “baptism” in English bibles represents the Greek word “baptizo” used in the original Greek language the New Testament was written in. The word literally means to be dunked or immersed into some liquid.
Greek historians writing about a sea battle described sailors who fell overboard as having been “baptized” into the sea (since they went into and under the water).
Another writing talked about cloth-makers “baptizing” their cloths into vats of color dye -- they were putting the cloths they made into and under the vats of liquid to dye the cloths the colors they wanted.
For the Christian , the person who has believed in Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior, baptism means to be momentarily dunked under some water, immersed in it.
