Confess/advocate before angels?
In Lk 12.8-9 Jesus mentions He will either acknowledge or deny men before the angels of God, based on whether or not they acknowledged Him before men. The text is:
Luke 12:8–9 (ESV) 8“And I tell you, everyone who acknowledges me before men, the Son of Man also will acknowledge before the angels of God, 9but the one who denies me before men will be denied before the angels of God.
In Mt 10.32-33 Jesus says something similar but this time He talks about acknowledging or denying men before the Father. That text is: Matthew 10:32–33 (ESV) 32So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven, 33but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven.
The question is, why would a person care whether or not Jesus denied them before angels?
MacArthur interprets the reference to angels to represent the event of judgment recorded in Mt 25.31-34, which mentions angels being present there. That text is: Matthew 25:31–34 (ESV) 31“When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, then he will sit on his glorious throne. 32Before him will be gathered all the nations, and he will separate people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. 33And he will place the sheep on his right, but the goats on the left. 34Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.
Most commentators agree, such as, “The reference is apparently to a future scene when the Lord Jesus, having achieved victory and honor, acknowledges those who supported him and disowns (v. 9) those who repudiated him during the present age. He does this publicly before God the Father (Matt 10:32–33) and the assembled angels.” Walter L. Liefeld, [“Luke,” in The Expositor’s Bible Commentary: Matthew, Mark, Luke, ed. Frank E.
