God communicates differently over time
Before the Scriptures were completed God spoke to individuals who were conscious and not asleep with detailed human language content. Scriptures themselves document numerous such examples:
- What God said to Adam.
- God’s instructions to Abram
- God’s information to the prophet Ahijah (1 Ki 14.5)
After the Scriptures were completed God speaks to individuals through the detailed human language content recorded in the Scriptures. He doesn’t normally, maybe never, speak to any individuals like He did before. God didn’t explicitly say He wouldn’t do so, but the principle is implied in His statements that His Word, the Scriptures, may not be expanded with additional text. The following scriptures establish this principle: Dt 4.2, 12.32; Pv 30.5-6; Rv 22.8-9.
