41 Mk 4.21-25 The lamp

Mark 4:21–25 (NASB95)

21And He was saying to them, “A lamp is not brought to be put under a basket, is it, or under a bed? Is it not brought to be put on the lampstand?

22“For nothing is hidden, except to be revealed; nor has anything been secret, but that it would come to light.

23“If anyone has ears to hear, let him hear.”

24And He was saying to them, “Take care what you listen to. By your standard of measure it will be measured to you; and more will be given you besides.

25“For whoever has, to him more shall be given; and whoever does not have, even what he has shall be taken away from him.”

The context of this parable is Jesus just having explained to His disciples the meaning of His parable of the soils, with emphasis on the gospel, the fruitful result of the seed of the gospel growing in fruitful soil resulting in more gospel seed being grown and spread.

Vs 21 The purpose of light is to illuminate. The gospel you disciples hear should be spread.

Vs 22 Nothing is hidden >> revealed. The gospel will come out; it will prevail.

Vs 23-24 Be hearing. Be careful how you listen. Be good soil; and your reward will be commensurate with your fruitfulness.

Vs 25 Whoever has gets more; whoever doesn’t have loses. God judges between believers and unbelievers. You have faith, so you’re getting explanations of the parables, learning the gospel, gaining opportunity to spread it and be rewarded. Unbelievers heard the parable and, being disinterested, will soon forget it. Even what little exposure to the truth they got will be lost. They walk in darkness and miss the light of life.
