Sanctioned/allowed divorce

Note: by saying divorce is "allowed" we mean that remarriage after such a divorce does not incur the sin of adultery.

Mt 5.32 and 19.9 describe a scenario when God considers a divorce valid: the case when a married person has committed adultery. Sometimes called "the exception clause", the rationale is not that in the event of adultery God permits divorce, but rather that in God's eyes the act of adultery dissolves the marriage. This changes the situation of the two people who were, before the sin, spouses:

The guilty person is an adulterer and fornicator.

The innocent person is no longer married, and thus free to marry someone else (and have conjugal relations with that person) without committing adultery.
