<h2>Career</h2>

Ravitch began her career as an editorial assistant at the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Leader" title="New Leader" class="mw-redirect">New Leader</a> magazine, a small journal devoted to democratic ideas. In 1975, she became a historian of education with a Ph.D. from Columbia University. At that time she worked closely with <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teachers_College,Columbia_University" title="Teachers College, Columbia University">Teachers College</a> president <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawrence_A.Cremin" title="Lawrence A. Cremin">Lawrence A. Cremin</a>, who was her mentor.

She was appointed to public office by Presidents <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_H.W.Bush" title="George H. W. Bush">George H. W. Bush</a> and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Clinton" title="Bill Clinton">Bill Clinton</a>. <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Secretary_of_Education" title="United States Secretary of Education">Secretary of Education</a> <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Riley" title="Richard Riley">Richard Riley</a> appointed her to serve as a member of the National Assessment Governing Board, which supervises the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Assessment_of_Educational_Progress" title="National Assessment of Educational Progress">National Assessment of Educational Progress</a>; she was a member of NAGB from 1997 to 2004.

<h2>Writings and statements on education</h2>

Ravitch critiqued the punitive uses of accountability to fire teachers and close schools, as well as replacing <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_school" title="State school">public schools</a> with <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charter_school" title="Charter school">charter schools</a> and relying on superstar teachers, in The Death and Life of the Great American School System: How Testing and Choice Undermine Education (2010). The book became a surprise best seller a month after its release. One reviewer wrote "Ravitch exhibits an interesting mix of support for public education and the rights of teachers to bargain collectively with a tough-mindedness that some on the pedagogical left lack."<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diane_Ravitch#cite_note-9">[9]</a>

While she originally supported <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/No_Child_Left_Behind" title="No Child Left Behind" class="mw-redirect">No Child Left Behind</a> and charter schools, Ravitch later became "disillusioned," and wrote, "I no longer believe that either approach will produce the quantum improvement in American education that we all hope for." In the major national evaluation, 17% of charters got higher scores, 46% were no different, and 37% were significantly worse than public schools, she said. High-stakes testing, "utopian" goals, "draconian" penalties, school closings, privatization, and charter schools didn't work, she concluded. "The best predictor of low academic performance is poverty—not bad teachers."<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diane_Ravitch#cite_note-10">[10]</a>

Ravitch said that the charter school and testing reform movement was started by "right wing think tanks like the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heritage_Foundation" title="Heritage Foundation" class="mw-redirect">Heritage Foundation</a>," for the purpose of destroying public education and teachers' unions.<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diane_Ravitch#cite_note-11">[11]</a> She reviewed the documentary <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waiting_for_Superman" title="Waiting for Superman" class="mw-redirect">Waiting for Superman</a>, directed by <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Davis_Guggenheim" title="Davis Guggenheim">Davis Guggenheim</a>, as "propagandistic" (pro-charter schools and anti-public schools), studded with "myths" and at least one "flatly wrong" claim.<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diane_Ravitch#cite_note-12">[12]</a> Of Education Secretary <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arne_Duncan" title="Arne Duncan">Arne Duncan</a>'s <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Race_to_the_Top" title="Race to the Top">Race to the Top</a> program, Ravitch said in a 2011 interview it "is an extension of No Child Left Behind ...[,] all bad ideas." She concluded "We are destroying our education system, blowing it up by these stupid policies. And handing the schools in low-income neighborhoods over to private entrepreneurs does not, in itself, improve them. There's plenty of evidence by now that the kids in those schools do no better, and it's simply a way of avoiding their - the public responsibility to provide good education."<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diane_Ravitch#cite_note-13">[13]</a>

Her book The Language Police (2003) was a criticism of both <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Left-wing_politics" title="Left-wing politics">left-wing</a> and <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Right-wing_politics" title="Right-wing politics">right-wing</a> attempts to stifle the study and expression of views deemed unworthy by those groups. <h2>Personal life</h2>

Ravitch was born in 1938 in <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Houston,_Texas" title="Houston, Texas" class="mw-redirect">Houston, Texas</a>, where she went to public schools. She is one of eight children. She is a graduate of <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wellesley_College" title="Wellesley College">Wellesley College</a>, has a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ph.D." title="Ph.D." class="mw-redirect">Ph.D.</a> from <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Columbia_University" title="Columbia University">Columbia University</a>, and lives in <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brooklyn" title="Brooklyn">Brooklyn</a>, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_City" title="New York City">New York City</a>. <h2>Educational reception and allegations of inaccuracy</h2>

A 2009 study done by <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanford_University" title="Stanford University">Stanford University</a> found that, on average, <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charter_school" title="Charter school">charter schools</a> perform about the same or worse than their traditional public school virtual twins.<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waiting_for_Superman#cite_note-23">[23]</a> The film does note, however, that most charter schools do not outperform public schools and focuses on those that do. It also states that only one in five charter schools outperform public schools (close to the 17% statistic).</div>

Author and academic Rick Ayers lambasted the accuracy of the film, describing it as "a slick marketing piece full of half-truths and distortions."<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waiting_for_Superman#cite_note-AyersHP-24">[24]</a> In Ayers' view, the "corporate powerhouses and the ideological opponents of all things public" have employed the film to "break the teacher's unions and to privatize education," while driving teachers' wages even lower and running "schools like little <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corporation" title="Corporation">corporations</a>."<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waiting_for_Superman#cite_note-AyersHP-24">[24]</a> According to the film inflation-adjusted per-student spending has more than doubled since 1971, "from $4,300 to more than $9,000 per student," but that over the same period, test scores have "flatlined." Ayers also critiqued the film's promotion of a greater focus on "top-down instruction driven by test scores," positing that extensive research has demonstrated that <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Standardized_testing" title="Standardized testing" class="mw-redirect">standardized testing</a> "dumbs down the curriculum" and "reproduces inequities," while marginalizing "English language learners and those who do not grow up speaking a <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Middle_class" title="Middle class">middle class</a> vernacular."<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waiting_for_Superman#cite_note-AyersHP-24">[24]</a> Lastly, Ayers contends that "schools are more segregated today than before <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brown_v._Board_of_Education" title="Brown v. Board of Education">Brown v. Board of Education</a> in 1954," and thus criticized the film for not mentioning that in his view, "black and brown students are being suspended, expelled, searched, and criminalized."<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waiting_for_Superman#cite_note-AyersHP-24">[24]</a>

<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diane_Ravitch" title="Diane Ravitch">Diane Ravitch</a>, Research Professor of Education at <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_York_University" title="New York University">New York University</a> and a nonresident senior fellow at the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brookings_Institution" title="Brookings Institution">Brookings Institution</a>, similarly criticizes the film's lack of accuracy.<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waiting_for_Superman#cite_note-Ravitch-25">[25]</a> Ravitch notes that a study by <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stanford_University" title="Stanford University">Stanford University</a> economist Margaret Raymond of 5000 charter schools found that only 17% are superior in math test performance to a matched public school, casting doubt on the film's claim that privately managed charter schools are the solution to bad public schools.<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waiting_for_Superman#cite_note-Ravitch-25">[25]</a> The film does note however that most charter schools do not outperform and that it focuses on those that do. As well, the film explicitly stated that one in five charter schools (close to the 17% statistic previously stated) were the overreaching, superior charter schools. Ravitch writes that many charter schools also perform badly, are involved in "unsavory real estate deals" and expel low-performing students before testing days to ensure high test scores.<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waiting_for_Superman#cite_note-Ravitch-25">[25]</a> The most substantial distortion in the film, according to Ravitch, is the film's claim that "70 percent of eighth-grade students cannot read at grade level," a misrepresentation of data from the <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Assessment_of_Educational_Progress" title="National Assessment of Educational Progress">National Assessment of Educational Progress</a>.<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waiting_for_Superman#cite_note-Ravitch-25">[25]</a> Ravitch served as a board member with the NAEP and notes that "the NAEP doesn't measure performance in terms of grade-level achievement," as claimed in the film, but only as "advanced," "proficient," and "basic." The film assumes that any student below proficient is "below grade level," but this claim is not supported by the NAEP data.

A teacher-backed group called the Grassroots Education Movement produced a rebuttal film titled <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Inconvenient_Truth_Behind_Waiting_for_Superman" title="The Inconvenient Truth Behind Waiting for Superman">The Inconvenient Truth Behind Waiting for Superman</a>. This film criticizes some public figures featured in Waiting for "Superman" and proposes different policies to improve education in the United States.<a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waiting_for_Superman#cite_note-26">[26]</a>
