Far-right white evangelicals love Trump for many reasons — including their terrifying obsession with the End Times: reportPresident Donald J. Myles Cullen)Written by Alex Henderson January 24, 2020The Christian Right loves President Donald Trump for a variety of reasons, from his racist rhetoric and anti-immigrant views to all the far-right judges he has added to the federal courts. But journalist Stephanie Mencimer, this week in an article for Mother Jones, focuses on one of their most disturbing reasons for being so pro-Trump: an obsession with the End Times.
In Protestant Christianity, one finds both fundamentalists and non-fundamentalists. Mainline Protestants (Episcopalians, Presbyterians, Lutherans, the African Methodist Episcopal or AME Church) study the Bible intensely, but they don’t have the obsession with the End Times and the New Testament’s Book of Revelation that the fundamentalist Christian Right has. And even though Trump himself is not a fundamentalist (he was raised Presbyterian), he is more than happy to pander to far-right white evangelicals — who, as Mencimer explains in her article, believe that Trump is important to the end of the world. The Christian Right welcomes the End Times because as they see it, Jesus Christ will return to Earth in the last days.
Mencimer, in her article, quotes religious historian Diane Butler Bass, who offers some insights on why the Christian Right believe Trump could play an important role in the End Times — and why the Christian Right has been applauding the killing of Iranian military commander Qasem Soleimani. Bass told Mother Jones, “When Iran gets into the news, especially with anything to do with war, it’s sort of a prophetic dog whistle to evangelicals. They will support anything that seems to edge the world towards this conflagration. They don’t necessarily want violence, but they’re eager for Christ to return — and they think that this war with Iran and Israel has to happen for their larger hope to pass.”
According to Mencimer, Trump “has surrounded himself with people who hail from the fringes of the evangelical community that is steeped in the language of biblical prophecy, and his administration regularly reflects that language back to them in its messaging.”
Fundamentalists who “subscribe to” an “apocalyptic world view seem to be overrepresented among Trump’s religious supporters and advisers,” Mencimer stresses.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, Mencimer observes, is a “master” of “messaging” that panders to “End Times evangelicals” — noting that in 2015, after the U.S. Supreme Court had legalized same-sex marriage nationwide, Pompeo told a Kansas church, “We will continue to fight these battles. It is a never-ending struggle. … until the Rapture.”
Among End Times evangelicals, one book that is considered essential reading is 1995’s “Left Behind: A Novel of the Earth’s Last Days,” written by Jerry B. Jenkins and the late Rev. Tim LaHaye. That book, Mencimer explains, addresses “the war of Gog and Magog, a biblical conflict prophesied in the Book of Ezekiel. In the Bible, Gog is the leader of Magog, a ‘place in the far north’ that many evangelicals believe is Russia. According to Ezekiel’s prophecy, Gog will join with Persia — now Iran — and other Arab nations to attack a peaceful Israel ‘like a cloud that covers the land.’ LaHaye, like many evangelicals, believed this battle would bring on the Rapture, the End Times event when God spirits away the good Christians to heaven before unleashing plagues, sickness and other horrors on the unbelievers remaining on Earth. Meanwhile, the Antichrist reigns supreme.”
Mencimer ends her article with a disturbing quote from André Gagné, theology professor at Concordia University in Montreal. According to Gagné, the Christian Right is all for the U.S. going to war with Iran if it leads to a broader conflict in the Middle East and helps bring about the End Times.
“If it brings the end of the world, it brings the end of the world,” Gagné told Mother Jones. “They’re ready. They can’t wait for the Rapture to happen. For them, it’s the ultimate reunion with God.”<div>

Rev. Jerry Falwell stated that the United Nations is "the infrastructure, the stage on which the Antichrist will build his one-world government." Falwell also asserted that the prevalence of online bill-paying is a sign that "God is setting the stage for ... a cashless society," and that "the day will come" when "the only way you can get cash and trade and to do business is to have the mark of the beast."Predicting events that will happen around the time that many Christians believe will be the second coming of Christ, Rev. Jerry Falwell, founder and chairman of the Moral Majority Coalition, stated during his August 27 televised sermon that the United Nations is "the infrastructure, the stage on which the Antichrist will build his one-world government." Falwell also asserted that the prevalence of online bill-paying is a sign that "God is setting the stage for ... a cashless society," and that "the day will come" when "the only way you can get cash and trade and to do business is to have the mark of the beast." Falwell also stated that "I expect the Lord to return in the 21st century ... because there are no more predicted events that need to happen," adding: "I can't prove that."
As Media Matters for America has noted, some members of the conservative media have seen signs of the Apocalypse in the recent escalation of conflicts in the Middle East and Asia. In a July 22 commentary posted on the conservative news website WorldNetDaily.com titled "On the threshold of Armageddon?," Falwell wrote: "It is apparent, in light of the rebirth of the state of Israel, that the present-day events in the Holy Land may very well serve as a prelude or forerunner to the future Battle of Armageddon and the glorious return of Jesus Christ."
The interpretation that a "cashless society" is a sign of the Antichrist derives from a verse in the Book of Revelation: "He [the Antichrist] also forced everyone, small and great, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on his right hand or on his forehead, so that no one could buy or sell unless he had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of his name." Some religious conservatives view the United Nations as a precursor to a "one-world government" also alluded to in Revelation; for instance, in the Left Behind series of books by Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins -- which uses the Book of Revelation as a "framework" to tell a story of the End Times -- the Antichrist character, Nicolae Carpathia, uses his position as United Nations secretary-general to create a world government with himself as ruler.
From Falwell's August 27 sermon at the Thomas Road Baptist Church in Lynchburg, Virginia, where he serves as senior pastor:
FALWELL: I expect the Lord to return in the 21st century to Rapture at his church. Now, I can't prove that. I cannot prove that the Lord is gonna come in this century. No one knows the day or the hour, but in my heart I believe it because there are no more predicted events that need to happen before our Lord can return.

I expect a global economy in the 21st century, which first will manifest itself as a cashless society. I believe that plastic will take the place of cash, and that while this will only be fulfilled during the tribulation period at the Rapture, I believe that God is setting the stage for, and laying the infrastructure for, a cashless society right now. Bush prepared to court evangelical voters, he was clearly taken aback by their hatred of the United Nations. Chatting by phone with his friend Doug Wead, a former Assemblies of God minister, Bush read from an aide’s report on a recent gathering of Pat Robertson’s Christian Coalition: “The mere mention of Kofi Annan in the U.N. caused the crowd to go into a veritable fit. The Coalition…wants the American flag flying overseas, not the pale blue of the U.N.”Though we tend to accept as a given conservative Protestants’ vehement hostility to the U.N., it is not self-evident that this should be so. While obviously a flawed institution, the U.N. over its sixty-year history has generally been viewed as a force for peace, conflict resolution, and aid to victims of disease, poverty, political violence, and natural disasters—efforts seemingly in accord with Christian values. Why, then, does it induce such paroxysms of rage among conservative Christians?Part of the answer, I think, lies in the powerful grip on many evangelicals and fundamentalists of premillennial dispensationalism, an eschatological system formulated in the mid-nineteenth century by the British churchman John Darby, a founder of the Plymouth Brethren sect. Darby’s system was popularized in America by Darby himself and by Cyrus Scofield’s influential Scofield Reference Bible (Oxford University Press, 1909). Depending on the precise question, opinion pollsters find that from 40 to 60 percent of contemporary Americans embrace key elements of Darby’s end-time scenario: the imminent Rapture of the saints; the seven-year Tribulation dominated by the Antichrist; the Battle of Armageddon, when Christ and the raptured saints will defeat Antichrist and his earthly armies; Christ’s thousand-year millennial reign; and the Last Judgment, ending the great human drama that began with Creation. Following Darby’s lead, dispensationalists also attentively monitor the “signs of the times”—a convergence of events, many centering on the Jews, signaling the terminus of the present dispensation, the Church Age. (For the relevant biblical passages, the website of the Texas-based Pre-Trib Research Center, founded in 1993 by Tim LaHaye and Thomas Ice, may prove helpful. The “Rapture Index,” described by its webmaster as “a Dow Jones Industrial Average of end-time activity,” will also help orient the novice.)To anyone even dimly aware of contemporary religious trends, this is hardly news. The Left Behind series of Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins, a fictionalized treatment of Darby’s system, has racked up sales of more than 60 million copies. Still active is Hal Lindsey, the modern movement’s John the Baptist, whose The Late Great Planet Earth (1970), a kind of “Dispensationalism for Dummies,” was the nonfiction best-seller of the 1970s. Lindsey went on to produce many more prophecy books, a syndicated radio show, and—inevitably—an Internet website. Other prophecy peddlers, from the venerable Jack (“The Walking Bible”) Van Impe, of Royal Oak, Michigan, to Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, and James Hagee preside over their own multimedia empires. All the components of modern mass marketing—blockbuster printings; book tours; TV interviews; tie-in products; movie spin-offs; distribution through mega-outlets such as Borders, Barnes & Noble, Wal-Mart, and Amazon.com keep the prophecy biz humming. As Nicholas Kristof of the New York Times recently observed, apropos the many Left Behind spin-offs, from movies to mouse pads, “This isn’t religion; this is brand management.”...This prairie-fire spread of dispensationalism, after decades when a core of believers kept the faith, profoundly impacts how millions of Americans view world events. To be sure, the contempt for the United Nations noted by Bush in 1998 and fully on display during W’s first term has deep historical roots (Thomas Jefferson, after all, was the first to warn against “entangling alliances”), but dispensationalist doctrine strongly reinforces it. According to Darby’s contemporary popularizers, the Antichrist will first present himself as a man of peace, settling the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, for example, but will soon impose a brutal global dictatorship under the sinister number “666” (Rev 13:18).For dispensationalists, the United Nations is at least a forerunner of Antichrist’s regime. Earlier prophecy writers found Antichrist tendencies in Saladin, Napoleon, Hitler, Mussolini, and even Juan Carlos of Spain. In current dispensationalist fiction, however, including the Left Behind series and Hal Lindsey’s 1996 novel Blood Moon, the U.N. secretary-general is unmasked as the Evil One. Saturated in such propaganda, dispensationalists understandably recoil in horror when contemplating the United Nations and its penumbra of international organizations. Even the U.S. State Department, viewed as a hotbed of internationalist sentiment, is suspect. Pat Robertson’s October 2003 musings on his Christian Broadcasting Network (CBN) about detonating a nuclear device in Foggy Bottom were wholly in tune with dispensationalist thinking....?<p style="margin: 0px 0px 1em; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; font-stretch: inherit; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19.5px; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">The apocalyptic wishful thinking has persisted, but the Cold War’s end shifted attention from Russia to the Muslim world. The Islam-as-Antichrist theme is actually very old. It helped fuel the Crusades and it loomed large as Muslim armies marched on Europe and the Ottoman Empire extended its reach. It faded somewhat after 1917, with the Ottoman collapse and the communist revolution in Russia, but surged back with the Persian Gulf conflict of 1990–91. While even some biblical literalists have interpreted the “Babylon” whose destruction is foretold in the Bible as an allegory of the Antichrist’s world system, recent works such as Charles Dyer’s <em style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-size: inherit; line-height: inherit; font-family: inherit;">The Rise of Babylon: Sign of the End Times (1991) focused on the ancient city itself and Saddam Hussein’s grandiose project to restore its ancient glory. In the Left Behind series, Nicolae Carpathia, the U.N. secretary-general- turned-Antichrist, moves the world organization to a rebuilt Babylon, laying the groundwork for the simultaneous destruction of <em style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-size: inherit; line-height: inherit; font-family: inherit;">both the hated U.N. <em style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-size: inherit; line-height: inherit; font-family: inherit;">and the doomed city of Revelation 18.<p style="margin: 0px 0px 1em; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; font-stretch: inherit; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19.5px; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">With 9/11 and the Iraq War, the anti-Muslim theme reached feverish levels. In <em style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px; border: 0px; border-image-source: initial; border-image-slice: initial; border-image-width: initial; border-image-outset: initial; border-image-repeat: initial; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; font-variant: inherit; font-weight: inherit; font-stretch: inherit; font-size: inherit; line-height: inherit; font-family: inherit; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">Beyond Iraq: The Next Move(2003), prophecy-writer Michael Evans labeled Islam “a religion conceived in the pit of hell.” Televangelist John Hagee, preaching at his Cornerstone Church in San Antonio, called the Iraq War “the gateway to the Apocalypse” and a sign of Christ’s imminent Second Coming. House majority leader Tom DeLay, present in the audience, then rose to proclaim: “Ladies and gentlemen, what has been spoken here tonight is the truth from God.”<p style="margin: 0px 0px 1em; padding: 0px; border: 0px; outline: 0px; vertical-align: baseline; font-stretch: inherit; font-size: 13px; line-height: 19.5px; font-family: Verdana, Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; background-color: rgb(255, 255, 255);">Lt. General Jerry Boykin, a top Pentagon intelligence official, delivered sermons in full-dress uniform in fundamentalist churches portraying the war on terrorism in apocalyptic religious terms: “Why do [radical Muslims] hate us so much?… [B]ecause we’re a Christian nation.” For Boykin, the real enemy “is a spiritual enemy, … called Satan,” and his earthly agents will be defeated only “if we come against them in the name of Jesus.” As for domestic politics, George Bush is “in the White House because God put him there for a time such as this.” A Boykin clone, Lt. Col. Gareth Brandl, a commander in Iraq, rejects talk of a “faceless” enemy: “[T]he enemy has got a face. He’s called Satan. He lives in Fallujah. For the most part, the people on the tour could pass for a random selection culled from almost any shopping mall in America. There are warm and loving middle-aged couples who hold hands. There is a well-coiffed Texas matron with an Hermès scarf. There’s a ducktailed septuagenarian and a host of post-teen mall rats. There are young singles. One couple even chose this trip for their honeymoon. A big-haired platinum blonde with a white sequined cowboy hat adds a touch of Dallas glamour. There is a computer-security expert, a legal assistant, and a real-estate broker; a construction executive, a retired pastor, a caregiver for the elderly, and a graduate student from Jerry Falwell’s Liberty University. They hail from Peoria, Illinois, and Longview, Texas, as well as San Diego and San Antonio. Most are fans of the “Left Behind” books. Some have attended the Left Behind Prophecy Conference on one of its tours of the U.S.And while their beliefs may seem astounding to secular Americans, they are not unusual. According to a Time/CNN poll from 2002, 59 percent of Americans believe the events in the book of Revelation will take place. There are as many as 70 million Evangelicals in the U.S.—about 25 percent of the population—attending more than 200,000 evangelical churches. Most of these churches are run by pastors who belong to conservative political organizations that make sure their flocks vote as a hard-right Republican bloc.A fascination with Revelation, the Rapture, and Christian Zionism has always been a potent, if often unseen, component of the American consciousness. More than three centuries ago, Puritans from John Winthrop to Cotton Mather saw America as a millennial kingdom linked to both the apocalypse and ancient Israel in a divine way that prefigured the Second Coming of Christ. America was to be the New Jerusalem, the Redeemer Nation, a people blessed with divine guidance.Imagery from the book of Revelation has inspired poets and writers from William Blake and William Butler Yeats to Joan Didion and Bob Dylan. “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” draws references from Revelation. Elements of the book of Revelation—secularized or otherwise—turn up in movies starring Gary Cooper (High Noon), Gregory Peck (The Omen), Clint Eastwood (Pale Rider), and Mimi Rogers (The Rapture), as well as in NBC’s Revelations. Already, there have been two “Left Behind” movies—available mostly on video—and a third is in production. LaHaye’s “Left Behind” series of books, co-authored with Jerry Jenkins, has brought in $650 million to Tyndale House, its now affluent Christian publisher.On the Internet, raptureready.com put its Rapture Index at 161 in the wake of Hurricane Katrina; anything over 145 means “fasten your seat belts.” A number of Christian Web sites sell clothing emblazoned with Rapture logos. There was even a team of NASCAR drivers, Randy MacDonald and Jimmy Hensley, whose souped-up Chevy proudly displayed “Left Behind” insignia—not the most propitious message for a driver vying for pole position.......Explaining his affinity for Israel, Falwell says, “Long before I became a political activist, I’d been taught that the Abrahamic Covenant—Genesis 12 and Genesis 15—is still binding, where God told Abraham, ‘I will bless them that bless you and curse them that curse you.’“It was obvious to me, beginning with the birth of the Israeli state, in 1948, and the Six-Day War, in 1967, that God was bringing his people back home. So I came to believe that it was in America’s best interest to be a friend of Israel.… If America blessed the Jew, Israel in particular, God would bless America.”The special political relationship between the Israeli right and Evangelicals dates back to 1977, when, after three decades of Labor rule in Israel, Menachem Begin became the first prime minister from the conservative Likud Party. A romantic nationalist and serious biblical scholar, Begin pointedly referred to the lands of the West Bank by their biblical names of Judea and Samaria, and he reached out to American Evangelicals at a time when they were just coming out of a political hibernation that dated back to the Scopes trial of 1925 and Prohibition. “The prime minister said a person who has got the Bible in his home and reads it and believes it cannot be a bad person,” recalls Yechiel Kadishai, a longtime personal aide to Begin. “He said the Evangelicals have to know that we are rooted in this piece of land. There should be an understanding between us and them.” One of the first people Begin sought out was Jerry Falwell, who was achieving national recognition through his growing television ministry.
In 1980, Begin presented Falwell with the prestigious Jabotinsky Award, gave his ministry a private jet, and shared vital state secrets with the televangelist. Begin even called him before bombing Iraq’s Osirak nuclear reactor, in June 1981. “He said, ‘Tomorrow you’re going to read some strong things about what we are going to do. But our safety is at stake,’” Falwell recalls. “He said, ‘I wanted you, my good friend, to know what we are going to do.’ And, sure enough, they put one down the chimney.”
In the early days of his ministry, Falwell, like other Evangelicals, had made a policy of not mixing religion and politics at all—much less on a global scale. “I had been taught in the seminary that religion and politics don’t mix,” he says. “Conservative theologians were absolutely convinced that the pulpit should be devoted to prayer, preaching, and exclusively to spiritual ministry.
“But in the 60s the U.S. Supreme Court had decided to remove God from the public square, beginning with the school-prayer issue. Then, in 1973, the Supreme Court had ruled 7-to-2 in favor of abortion on demand. And I wondered, ‘What can I do?’”Several years later, Falwell got a call from Francis Schaeffer. An electrifying Presbyterian evangelist and author, Schaeffer is probably the most important religious figure that secular America has never heard of. Widely regarded by Evangelicals as one of their leading theologians of the 20th century, Schaeffer, who died in 1984, was to the Christian right what Marx was to Marxism, what Freud was to psychoanalysis. “There is no question in my mind that without Francis Schaeffer the religious right would not exist today,” says Falwell. “He was the prophet of the modern-day faith-and-values movement.”A powerful influence on Falwell, LaHaye, Pat Robertson, and many others, Schaeffer asserted in the wake of Roe v. Wade that Evangelicalism could no longer passively accommodate itself to the decadent values of the secular-humanist world, now that it had sanctioned the murder of unborn babies. Almost single-handedly, he prodded Evangelicals out of the pulpit and into a full-scale cultural war with the secular world. “I was in search of a scriptural way that I, as pastor of a very large church, could address the moral and social issues facing American culture,” Falwell says. “Dr. Schaeffer shattered that world of isolation for me, telling me that, while I was preaching a very clear gospel message, I was avoiding 50 percent of my ministry.… He began teaching me that I had a responsibility to confront the culture where it was failing morally and socially.”
In 1979, Falwell was still “looking for a plan to mobilize people of faith in this country” when Tim LaHaye, then a pastor in San Diego, called him. LaHaye had just founded Californians for Biblical Morality, a coalition of right-wing pastors who fought against gay rights and even sought to ban the fantasy game Dungeons & Dragons in a Glendora community college on the grounds that it was an “occult” game.When he visited San Diego, Falwell was impressed with how LaHaye had organized the pastors to confront the state government on moral and social issues. “When he told me how he did it, I wondered why we couldn’t do it on a national basis,” says Falwell.And so, in 1979, Falwell launched the Moral Majority with LaHaye and other leading fundamentalist strategists to lobby for prayer and the teaching of creationism in public schools and against gay rights, abortion, and the Equal Rights Amendment. LaHaye’s wife, Beverly, also entered the fray that year by founding Concerned Women for America, to “bring biblical principles into all levels of public policy” and oppose the “anti-marriage, anti-family, anti-children, anti-man” feminism put forth by the National Organization for Women.Courtly, genteel, and soft-spoken, LaHaye hardly looks the part of a ferocious right-wing culture warrior. In public or in private, LaHaye is understated, the antithesis of the fire-and-brimstone preacher one might expect to deliver prophecies of the apocalypse and Armageddon. Yet even Falwell has said that LaHaye has done more than anyone to set the agenda for Evangelicalism in the U.S.LaHaye’s belief in the Rapture dates back to his father’s funeral, in Detroit, when he was just nine years old. “The minister at the funeral said these words: ‘This is not the end of Frank LaHaye,’” he told The Christian Science Monitor. “‘Because he accepted Jesus, the day will come when the Lord will shout from heaven and descend, and the dead in Christ will rise first and then we’ll be caught up together to meet him in the air.’”......From then on, LaHaye was entranced with Rapturist theology, which was popularized in the U.S. in the 19th century by a renegade Irish Anglican preacher named John Nelson Darby. A proponent of a prophetic branch of theology known as premillennial dispensationalism, Darby asserted that a series of signs—including wars, immorality, and the return of the Jews to Israel—signal the End of Days. Once the end is nigh, all true believers will be raptured to meet Christ. After that, Darby taught, the world will enter a horrifying seven-year period of Tribulation, during which a charismatic Antichrist will seize power. But in the end, he prophesied, the Antichrist will be vanquished by Christ at Armageddon, and Christ’s 1,000-year reign of peace and justice will begin. This, in brief, is the theology taught by evangelists such as Jerry Falwell, John Hagee, and many others—including Tim LaHaye.After graduating from the ultra-conservative Bob Jones University, in Greenville, South Carolina, LaHaye began preaching in nearby Pumpkintown at a salary of $15 a week. For 25 years, he served as pastor at Scott Memorial Baptist Church, in San Diego, transforming it from a congregation of 275 into one with 3,000 members.
Along the way, LaHaye avidly read Francis Schaeffer. “Schaeffer taught me the difference between the Renaissance and the Reformation,” he says during the tour of Israel. “And you know what the difference is? The Renaissance was all about the centrality of man. The Reformation was all about clearing up the ways the [Catholic] Church had mucked up Christianity—and getting back to the centrality of God.”
In The Battle for the Mind, his 1980 homage to Schaeffer, LaHaye lays out his worldview far more forcefully than he does in person, depicting America as a Bible-based country under siege by an elite group of secular humanists conspiring to destroy the nuclear family, Christianity itself, and even “the entire world.” There are no shades of gray in this Manichaean tract, which asserts that secular humanism is “not only the world’s greatest evil but, until recently, the most deceptive of all religious philosophies.”
Life, LaHaye argues, has always been a battle between good and evil. “The good way has always been called ‘God’s way,’” he writes, and evil has been the way of man—specifically, the post-Renaissance, post-Enlightenment world of art, science, and reason. And, in his view, nothing man has come up with is worse than secular humanism, which he defines as “a Godless, man-centered philosophy” that rejects traditional values and that has “a particular hatred toward Christianity.”
“LaHaye writes as if there’s a humanist brain trust sitting around reading [American philosopher and educational reformer] John Dewey, trying to figure out ways to destroy Christianity,” says Chip Berlet, a senior analyst with Political Research Associates and the co-author of Right-Wing Populism in America: Too Close for Comfort.
In truth, while tens of millions of Americans might accurately be called secular humanists, very few characterize themselves as members of a humanist movement. But to LaHaye that only proves the deviousness of the humanist project. Instead of openly advocating their point of view, he writes, humanists have used the mass media and Hollywood, the government, academia, and organizations such as the A.C.L.U. and NOW to indoctrinate unsuspecting Christians.
As a result, LaHaye argues, good Evangelicals should no longer think of humanists as harmless citizens who happen not to attend church. In The Battle for the Mind, he spells out his political goals: “We must remove all humanists from public office and replace them with pro-moral political leaders.”
“In LaHaye’s world, there are the godly people who are on their way to the Rapture,” says Berlet. “And the rest of the world is either complicit with the Antichrist or, worse, actively assisting him. If you really believe in End Times, you are constantly looking for agents of Satan.… [And if] political conflicts are rooted in the idea that your opponent is an agent of the Devil, there is no compromise possible. What decent person would compromise with evil? So that removes it from the democratic process.
“Conservative think tanks like the Heritage Foundation want to roll back the New Deal. LaHaye wants to roll back the Enlightenment.”Like Schaeffer’s writings, LaHaye’s book went largely unnoticed by the secular world, but the Christian right heartily embraced its declaration of war against secularism. Presbyterian televangelist D. James Kennedy hailed The Battle for the Mind as “one of the most important books of our time.” Falwell wrote that all Christians must follow its tenets if America is to be saved from becoming “another Sodom and Gomorrah.”In 1981, LaHaye took up the challenge, resigning his pastorship to devote himself full-time to building the Christian right. He began by meeting with moneyed ultra-conservatives including Nelson Bunker Hunt, the right-wing oil billionaire from Dallas, and T. Cullen Davis, another wealthy Texas oilman who became a born-again Christian after being acquitted of charges of murdering his wife’s lover and his stepdaughter.Though still in its infancy, the Moral Majority had more than seven million people on its mailing list and had already played a key role in electing Ronald Reagan president. Beverly LaHaye’s Concerned Women for America was on its way to building a membership of 500,000 people, making her “the most powerful woman in the new religious right,” according to the Houston Chronicle. She and her husband also co-authored a best-selling marriage manual for Christians, The Act of Marriage, full of clinical advice such as the following: “Cunnilingus and fellatio have in recent years been given unwarranted publicity [but] the majority of couples do not regularly use it as a substitute for the beautiful and conventional interaction designed by our Creator to be an intimate expression of love.” And in the mid-80s, LaHaye created the American Coalition for Traditional Values, which played an important role in re-electing Ronald Reagan, in 1984. He later became co-chairman of Jack Kemp’s 1988 presidential campaign but was forced to resign when anti-Catholic statements he had written came to light.With right-wing groups expanding at such a dizzying pace, LaHaye helped to found the Council for National Policy (C.N.P.) as a low-profile but powerful coalition of billionaire industrialists, fundamentalist preachers, and right-wing tacticians. Funded by Hunt and Davis, among others, the organization set out to create a coherent and disciplined strategy for the New Right.Though its membership is secret, the rolls have reportedly included Falwell and Pat Robertson; top right-wing political strategists Richard Viguerie, Ralph Reed, and Paul Weyrich; Republican senators Jesse Helms and Lauch Faircloth (both of North Carolina), Don Nickles (Oklahoma), and Trent Lott (Mississippi); and Republican representatives Dick Armey and Tom DeLay (both of Texas). The late Rousas John Rushdoony, the right-wing theologian who hoped to reconfigure the American legal system in accordance with biblical law, was said to be a member, as was John Whitehead of the Rutherford Institute, who was co-counsel to Paula Jones in her lawsuit against Bill Clinton.“Ronald Reagan, both George Bushes, senators and Cabinet members—you name it. There’s nobody who hasn’t been here at least once,” says Falwell, who confirms that he is a member. “It is a group of four or five hundred of the biggest conservative guns in the country.”
The C.N.P. has access to the highest powers in the land. In 1999, George W. Bush courted evangelical support for his presidential candidacy by giving a speech before the council, the transcript of which remains a highly guarded secret. And since the start of his presidency, Falwell says, the C.N.P. has enjoyed regular access to the Oval Office. “Within the council is a smaller group called the Arlington Group,” says Falwell. “We talk to each other daily and meet in Washington probably twice a month. We often call the White House and talk to Karl Rove while we are meeting. He criticizes the "S.U.V. gas-hog culture" and points to geological <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peak_oil" title="Peak oil" style="text-decoration: none; background: none;">estimates that oil supplies in most of the world have peaked</a>, in the most pessimistic of views, or will peak within the next few decades, which ranks in with the optimistic view, with the result being prices continuing to increase and oil becoming more scarce.Phillips points to political ramifications. He cites statistics that show that people who use more oil are more likely to vote republican. These people are more likely to drive larger domestic trucks and S.U.V.s and live further from the urban center of a city, thus driving more in less efficient vehicles. Of the top ten oil states, eight voted for <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_W.Bush" title="George W. Bush" style="text-decoration: none; background: none;">George W. Bush</a> in the 2004 Presidential election.Finally, Phillips suggests that oil has been the driving force in U.S. foreign policy for nearly thirty years. He suggests that various military events in the 1980s, as well as the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gulf_War" title="Gulf War" style="text-decoration: none; background-image: none; background-attachment: initial; background-color: initial; background-size: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial;">1991 Gulf War</a> and the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2003_Invasion_of_Iraq" class="mw-redirect" title="2003 Invasion of Iraq" style="text-decoration: none; background-image: none; background-attachment: initial; background-color: initial; background-size: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial; background-position: initial; background-repeat: initial;">2003 Invasion of Iraq</a>, were primarily oil driven. Bush" style="text-decoration: none; background: none;">George W. Bush</a> suggesting that he is speaking for God (Phillips points to past leaders, such as <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_Dictator" class="mw-redirect" title="Roman Dictator" style="text-decoration: none; background: none;">Roman Dictator</a> <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julius_Caesar" title="Julius Caesar" style="text-decoration: none; background: none;">Julius Caesar</a> who made similar statements.). He points to hostility by the social conservatives towards science in general, and<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darwinian_evolution" class="mw-redirect" title="Darwinian evolution" style="text-decoration: none; background: none;">Darwinian evolution</a> in particular. But he particularly focuses on the end-times prophecies of what he refers to as Christian Reconstructionists.Phillips starts this section by tracing the history of American religion. He argues that the pilgrims who emigrated to the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_World" title="New World" style="text-decoration: none; background: none;">New World</a> before the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Revolution" title="American Revolution" style="text-decoration: none; background: none;">American Revolution</a> were religious outsiders, who were non-conformist and more radical than the establishment would allow (which was why they left Europe in the first place). He points to a history of highly emotional religious practices in the 17th and 18th centuries. He then argues that after "fundamentalist religion" (particularly<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evangelicalism" title="Evangelicalism" style="text-decoration: none; background: none;">Evangelical</a> and the newly formed <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pentecostal" class="mw-redirect" title="Pentecostal" style="text-decoration: none; background: none;">Pentecostal</a> branches) were set back after the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scopes_Monkey_Trial" class="mw-redirect" title="Scopes Monkey Trial" style="text-decoration: none; background: none;">Scopes Monkey Trial</a>, they appeared to have been dealt a permanent blow. Phillips cites statistical studies that suggest that after this point, fundamentalist religion grew at a rapid rate, while mainstream denominations actually declined (this was covered to most observers at the time due to other circumstances, such as the increase in population at the time.)Phillips argues that religion is, by far, the most accurate predictor of political and ideological belief. the underlying Washington strategy… was less to give ordinary Americans direct sums than to create a low-interest-rate boom in real estate, thereby raising the percentage of American home ownership, ballooning the prices of homes, and allowing householders to take out some of that increase through low-cost refinancing. This triple play created new wealth to take the place of that destroyed in the 2000-2002 stock-market crash and simultaneously raised consumer confidence.

Nothing similar had ever been engineered before. Instead of a recovery orchestrated by Congress and the White House and aimed at the middle- and bottom-income segments, this one was directed by an appointed central banker, a man whose principal responsibility was to the banking system. His relief, targeted on financial assets and real estate, was principally achieved by monetary stimulus. This in itself confirmed the massive realignment of preferences and priorities within the American system….

Likewise, huge and indisputable but almost never discussed, were the powerful political economics lurking behind the stimulus: the massive rate-cut-driven post-2000 bailout of the FIRE (finance, insurance, and realestate) sector, with its ever-climbing share of GDP and proximity to power. No longer would Washington concentrate stimulus on wages or public-works employment. The Fed's policies, however shrewd, were not rooted in an abstraction of the national interest but in pursuit of its statutory mandate to protect the U.S. banking and payments system, now inseparable from the broadly defined financial-services sector.

Today, CWA claims more than 500,000 members organized into state chapters, a radio program that reaches more than 1 million listeners, and a cadre of attorneys and researchers devoted to the group’s mission of promoting biblical values.LaHaye has blamed gay people for a “radical leftist crusade” in America and, over the years, has occasionally <a href="http://www.splcenter.org/get-informed/intelligence-report/browse-all-issues/2010/winter/10-myths">equated homosexuality with pedophilia</a>. Tony Perkins, the FRC has been a font of anti-gay propaganda throughout its history. It relies on the work of Robert Knight, who also worked at Concerned Women for America but now is at Coral Ridge Ministries (see above for both), along with that of FRC senior research fellows Tim Dailey (hired in 1999) and Peter Sprigg (2001). The same publication argued that “homosexual activists publicly disassociate themselves from pedophiles as part of a public relations strategy.” FRC offered no evidence for these remarkable assertions, and has never publicly retracted the allegations. (The American Psychological Association, among others, has concluded that “homosexual men are not more likely to sexually abuse children than heterosexual men are.”)In fact, in a Nov. 30, 2010, debate on MSNBC’s “Hardball with Chris Matthews” <a href="http://www.splcenter.org/blog/2010/11/30/tony-perkins-defends-family-research-council-sort-of/">between Perkins and the Southern Poverty Law Center’s Mark Potok</a>, Perkins defended FRC’s association of gay men with pedophilia, saying: “If you look at the American College of Pediatricians, they say the research is overwhelming that homosexuality poses a danger to children. So Mark is wrong. He needs to go back and do his own research.” In fact, the college, despite its hifalutin name, is a tiny, explicitly religious-right breakaway group from the American Academy of Pediatrics, the 60,000-member association of the profession. Publications of the American College of Pediatricians, which has some 200 members, have been roundly attacked by leading scientific authorities who say they are baseless and accuse the college of distorting and misrepresenting their work.Elsewhere, according to AMERICAblog, Knight, while working at the FRC, claimed that “[t]here is a strong current of pedophilia in the homosexual subculture. … [T]hey want to promote a promiscuous society.” AMERICAblog also reported that then-FRC official Yvette Cantu, in an interview published on Americans for Truth About Homosexuality’s website, said, “If they [gays and lesbians] had children, what would happen when they were too busy having their sex parties?”More recently, in March 2008, Sprigg, responding to a question about uniting gay partners during the immigration process, said: “I would much prefer to export homosexuals from the United States than to import them.” He later apologized, but then went on, last February, to tell MSNBC host Chris Matthews, “I think there would be a place for criminal sanctions on homosexual behavior.” “So we should outlaw gay behavior?” Matthews asked. “Yes,” Sprigg replied. At around the same time, Sprigg claimed that allowing gay people to serve openly in the military would lead to an increase in gay-on-straight sexual assaults.</blockquote>Brody also stated this morning:“What Ted Cruz did last night, talking about our rights come from God not government, Mitt Romney used that exact line in Irwin Pennsylvania and had — and I counted it — a 17-second standing ovation. Bigger than Obamacare, bigger than anything else.”And Brody admitted Republican Senatorial nominee Ted Cruz used “code language” to appeal to religious voters, like, “the great awakening,” and agreed the former President George W.
