Our D-Day is coming,” declared the ominous subject line of an email from former Rep. Allen West sent on behalf of the religious-right voter turnout operation My Faith Votes on June 6, the 80th anniversary of the Allied landing on the beaches of Normandy, France, during World War II.
My Faith Votes is one of the multimillion dollar political operations designed to get conservative Christians to embrace and vote according to the right-wing “biblical worldview” promoted by My Faith Votes and the Family Research Council. My Faith Votes CEO Jason Yates is connected with dominionist New Apostolic Reformation figures who have rallied around Trump in all three of his presidential election campaigns.
West, a retired lieutenant colonel, chaired the Texas Republican Party in 2020 and 2021 before launching an unsuccessful run for governor. The warfare rhetoric continued in West’s recent message:
Our cultural D-day is coming. It is time for us to hit the beaches and the drop zones. And to continue to fight for the principles and values that our faith is rooted in.
We cannot allow the evils that we see taking place in America to fundamentally change our nation’s Judeo-Christian faith heritage.
Today we must remember not just those men and women who served, but also remember that we have a call to service as well.
Our D-day is coming, and we need to be ready.
An email from West earlier this year used a similar military theme:
Here’s something you learn quickly in the military: when you’re retreating, you’re losing.
People of faith in America have been in retreat for far too long, and if we don’t take back the initiative now, it might be too late. …
If it wasn’t clear already, it should be now: we are not going to turn the tide in this spiritual battle by continuing to play defense and apologize for what we believe.
My Faith Votes has a comprehensive “2024 Battle Plan” to get Christians back on offense, starting with maximizing turnout at the ballot box this November.
Metaphorical and spiritual warfare rhetoric is not new for My Faith Votes or Yates, who took part in a “50 Day Fight” project leading up to the 2020 election. A video promoting that project portrayed the election as a “battle of good and evil” and “spiritual warfare at its highest.” It warned that “Satan has released his demons” and urged viewers to “go to war with us.” Among the “prayer points” suggested by the project were, “Grant our country a second miracle that President Trump would be re-elected.”
West also took part in 2020’s “50 Day Fight,” recording an
with New Apostolic Reformation figure Doug Stringer, in which West suggested that Trump had been chosen by God to defend Christians under attack in the U.S. “We’re called to be soldiers of God,” he said. “We’re called to be warriors of his word.”
This month, in the same week as West’s bombastic appeal, My Faith Votes launched “Think Biblically,” a new video series designed to bring “Biblical clarity” to Christian voters “ahead of the November election.”
Like most religious-right groups, when My Faith Votes talks about Christians, they aren’t really talking about all Christians, especially not the millions of Christians who don’t share their politics or interpretation of scripture. Evidence of how narrowly My Faith Votes and its allies interpret what makes up a correct “biblical worldview” comes from pollster George Barna, a fellow at Family Research Council’s Center for Biblical Worldview, who says that only 4 percent of Americans have a biblical worldview. That means most Christians, even most conservative white evangelical Christians, don’t make the grade. That’s what this series is designed to fix.
“Christians are in desperate need of Biblical clarity on issues that matter, now, before secularism fills the void Christians left in politics and culture,” says an announcement for the series, which is divided into six modules, purporting to explain how people should think and act “biblically” on the topics of worldview, justice, abortion, sexuality and gender, “socialism,” and politics. Opposing views on those topics, MFV asserts, are lies that come from Satan. “It’s time to let our faith guide our politics,” Yates repeats.
The module on justice contrasts “biblical justice” with “social justice”—aligning with a faction of right-wing evangelicals who have railed against churches that address social and racial justice issues. Social justice, says the module’s featured speaker Voddie Bauchum, requires redistributing wealth and resources for equitable outcomes, something he says is “actually the opposite of what God’s justice requires.”
The module on sanctity of life declares that abortion is always murder; My Faith Votes teaches that life begins at the moment of conception and that abortion is not justifiable in cases of rape or incest. It asks people to consider what “lies that Satan has used to change Christians’ minds about the issue of life in the womb?” MFV urges Christians to “vote for the candidate who will protect life at every stage.”
The module on sexuality is narrated by Christopher Yuan. Like many “ex-gay” spokespeople, Yuan describes his life as a gay man as an unhappy one, including drug-dealing that led him to jail. “Understanding human sexuality through the lens of theological anthropology is crucial in how we are to live biblically,” says MFV’s study guide, which also asserts, “Secular culture emphasizes sexuality as a defining characteristic of one’s identity, but the Bible emphasizes that our identity is found in Christ alone.” MFV argues that Christians must continue to resist marriage equality.
The module on socialism focuses on the idea that taxation that supports government social spending is coercive, incentivizes godless behavior, and subsidizes “laziness” and “irresponsible” living. Yates calls it a “lie of the enemy” that government is the answer to poverty. Without using the terminology, MFV promotes the Christian Reconstructionist ideology that has been embraced by much of the religious right that the Bible makes care for the poor the job of churches and individuals, not the government. The study guide refers people to Liberty University’s Standing for Freedom Center articles on “biblical economic principles.”
The final module on politics tells viewers that it is “disloyal” for a Christian not to act as if their vote is a religious decision. “The earth is the Lord’s and everything in it,” says Yates quoting from the biblical book of Psalms. The module warns that if Christians aren’t involved in politics, decisions will be made by people who believe God doesn’t exist and disregard “God’s truth.”
Among the efforts MFV has backed in the name of promoting its biblical worldview was a democracy-limiting ballot initiative promoted by Ohio Republicans and anti-abortion activists last year—one that was soundly rejected by voters. MFV worked hard to elect Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin; they were less successful in their efforts to elect Republican senators in the 2021 Georgia runoff elections won by Democratic Sens. Raphael Warnock and John Ossoff.
In 2019, the Pentecostal media platform Charisma promoted an interview Yates did with Seven Mountains Dominionist Lance Wallnau, who called Trump “the perfect shepherd” for Christians who were worried about the “aggressive” and “belligerent” left. In 2018, Yates promoted an interview with “Duck Dynasty” star Phil Robertson, who urged Christians to vote in the midterm elections because, he said, Democrats were evil and depraved “God-haters.”
More recently, a May 27 MFV email said that Christians should be comforted by Bible verses about the world and the rulers of this age passing away: “As our society falls further into depravity, these verses should bring comfort to all who belong to Jesus because they remind us that darkness, wickedness, evil rulers, and this broken world have a limit. Even Satan understands his time is short (see Revelation 12:12).”
But that’s not a license to avoid politics and wait for God to step in: MFV honorary chairman Mike Huckabee wrote in a May 30 fundraising email, “My Faith Votes is in the midst of an extremely aggressive campaign to identify and mobilize Christians, and it’s inspiring to see.”

When the results of 2022 midterms came in on Election Night, one saw some patterns emerging. Democrats were performing much better than expected, and many of the Republicans who were defeating Democrats in statewide races in swing states tended to be traditional conservatives rather far-right hyper-MAGA conspiracy theorists.
Hyper-MAGA, ultra-Trumpian candidates, in fact, lost key gubernatorial races in Pennsylvania, Arizona, Wisconsin and Michigan, while many of the GOP governors who were reelected — Ohio’s Mike DeWine, Georgia’s Brian Kemp, New Hampshire’s Chris Sununu — were more traditional conservatives. One saw some ticket splitting in New Hampshire; Sununu was reelected by around 15 percent, while far-right MAGA conspiracy theorist Don Bolduc lost to incumbent Democratic Sen. Maggie Hasan by 9 percent.
DeWine and Sununu are often slammed as RINOs (Republicans In Name Only) by the MAGA crowd, but unlike Arizona’s Kari Lake, Michigan’s Tudor Dixon or Pennsylvania’s Doug Mastriano — Republican gubernatorial nominees who ran on ultra-MAGA platforms — they won. Conservative Washington Post opinion columnist Henry Olsen had a blunt comment in his November 22 column: “College-educated voters just aren’t into MAGA.”
But “weird” Republicans, The New Republic’s Graham Gallagher emphasizes in an article published on November 25, aren’t going away. In fact, they have achieved more and more prominence in the GOP and are making their presence felt in some right-wing think tanks such as the Claremont Institute.
“The ascendant weird right will likely struggle to sell its deeply anti-patriotic vision to many voters,” Gallagher explains. “In these segments of the mostly young, online-influenced American right, the optimistic vision espoused by Ronald Reagan’s ‘morning in America’ has been discarded. The elite educated right has moved even beyond the overt pessimism of Donald Trump’s ‘American carnage’ — now, disgust with equitable citizenship, personal liberty, and democratic self-governance is commonplace. Fed by an endless outrage cycle and a motivated and well-resourced donor class willing to pour money into increasingly reactionary think tanks like the avowedly anti-democratic Claremont Institute, right-wing thinkers and activists have begun to identify the foundational pillars of the United States itself with immorality and adopted a new fascination with medieval Catholicism and imported European extremisms.”
Gallagher points to “the right-wing embrace of (Russian President Vladimir) Putin” and former Rep. Allen West’s obsession with the Medieval Knights Templar as examples of how “bizarre” the “online weird right” can be. Others include beliefs that “real men don’t eat soybeans, seed oils are dangerous, meat substitutes will turn men into women and…. the best diet is all-meat.” And Gallagher cites some specific examples of how “weird” MAGA candidates could be in the 2022 midterms.
“Blake Masters and J.D. Vance — two Republican candidates for Senate funded in part by tech billionaire and new-right linchpin Peter Thiel — have embraced new-right ideas and actively courted the ‘weird right,’” Gallagher observes. “Vance has questioned whether women should leave violent marriages; Masters has praised domestic terrorist Theodore Kaczynski’s infamous manifesto, argued against legal access to contraception, and openly said that democracy is a smokescreen for the masses ‘stealing certain kinds of goods and redistributing them as they see fit.’ Americans on balance like democracy; legal contraception is almost universally popular; and Kaczynski’s unpopularity is so widely assumed that pollsters rarely ask about him. Masters, perhaps unsurprisingly, lost his bid to unseat Mark Kelly, and Vance badly underperformed in his blood-red home state.”

AMERICAN CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS UNION
The American Constitutional Rights Union (ACRU) is dedicated to defending the constitutional rights of all Americans. ACRU stands against harmful, anti-constitutional ideologies that have taken hold in our nation’s courts, culture, and bureaucracies. We defend and promote free speech, religious liberty, the Second Amendment, and national sovereignty.
Attorney General Edwin Meese III, ACRU Director
Attorney General Edwin Meese
“As Attorney General in the Reagan Administration, I committed myself to conserving and expanding freedom. It was my position that our Constitution, its text, and the original intention behind it, demanded nothing less. To argue otherwise would be to risk, as Abraham Lincoln said, “blowing out the moral lights around us.
That’s why I’ve, again, taken up my sword in defense of our Constitution and am fighting a very real and present danger to our nation. I serve on the board of an efficient and important organization, the American Constitutional Rights Union. I believe strongly that partnered with ACRU we have a real chance to preserve the freedoms and liberties we hold dear.”

Allen West: Yes, There Is an Invasion on Our Southern Border
By Allen West|July 12th, 2022
There are two definitions of the word invasion. The first is "an instance of invading a country or region with an armed force.” That is happening in Ukraine. The second definition of an invasion is "an incursion of a large number of people or things into a place of sphere of activity." That is happening here in America. It seems unbelievable that so many are asking for legal opinions and articulations of something so very simple.

Allen West: Stand for Election Integrity
During the 2020 election cycle, we observed unconstitutional actions. Governors and judges in many states like Georgia, Michigan, Wisconsin, Arizona, and Texas to name a few, made unconstitutional changes to election law. As we know, only the legislative branch are empowered to make laws at state and federal levels.
We want to make sure we don’t have a repeat of some of the things we saw happen in the 202o election. We want you to join with us at the ACRU and come out and stand for election integrity by becoming a poll worker or poll watcher. far-right Republican running for Texas governor could be a big headache for the GOP
July 09, 2021
Before early 2015, Republican Allen West was best known for his far-right antics in the Sunshine State — where the Tea Party extremist served one term in the U.S. House of Representatives via Florida's 22nd...
an 621
"Allen West resigns as chair of Texas Republican Party" was first published by The Texas Tribune, a nonprofit, nonpartisan media organization that informs Texans — and engages with them — about public policy, politics, government and statewide issues.
Texas GOP Chairman Allen West announced his resignation Friday morning, raising speculation he could run for statewide office.
West, who has been in charge of the party for shy of a year, will remain chair until a successor is picked on July 11, the party said.
“It has been my distinct honor to serve as Chairman of the Republican Party of Texas. I pray Godspeed for this governing body," he said in a statement.
The party said that West “will take this opportunity to prayerfully reflect on a new chapter in his already distinguished career."
West has not ruled out challenging Gov. Greg Abbott, and he has also had tension recently with Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick.
The state office for Land Commissioner is also an open seat this election season now that incumbent commissioner George P. Bush has announced he's running for attorney general.
A former Florida congressman who moved to Texas several years ago, West took over the party last summer, unseating incumbent James Dickey. He quickly made a name for himself for his willingness to speak out against fellow Republicans, including Abbott, whose coronavirus response he criticized.
West used the latest legislative session to push hard for the party's eight legislative priorities, and he has spent recent days lamenting the lack of progress that lawmakers have to show on them.
West is set to appear at a news conference at 10:30 a.m. in Whitehouse, near Tyler, to discuss the session.
Abbott has already drawn a primary challenge from former state Sen. Don Huffines of Dallas. In addition to West, Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller could also take on Abbott. On Tuesday, Abbott was endorsed for reelection by former President Donald Trump.
Abbott is not the only statewide official with whom West has butted heads. Toward the end of the session, he put pressure on Patrick, the presiding officer, to pass a House-approved bill allowing permitless carry of handguns, questioning Patrick's commitment to the cause and alleging the Senate added "poison-pill amendments." Patrick eventually wrangled the votes, he got the bill through the Senate and it is now on its way to Gov. Greg Abbott's desk for his signature.
Without naming West, Patrick said in a statement at one point after the bill passed the Senate that those who claimed the Senate-amended bill was in peril "willfully misled many Second Amendment supporters in Texas."

https://www.alternet.org/2021/02/journalism-lies/
On Sunday, NBC's "Meet the Press" interviewed United States Senator Ron Johnson. ABC's "This Week" interviewed House Minority Whip Steve Scalise. CBS's "Face the Nation" interviewed United States Senator Lindsey Graham. "Fox News Sunday" interviewed United States Senator Rand Paul. They're Republicans and they had a message for a combined television audience of millions: Donald Trump won.
Not in those exact words, but that was the clear implication. This thing or that thing—it didn't really matter what thing—meant in their "view" that the former president was robbed and the legitimacy of the current president, Joe Biden, is somehow suspect.
I bring this up not because yesterday was a disaster for journalism and the integrity of the public square (though it was that). I bring this up because it seems to me an answer to the question that haunts democratic discourse: How does a republic deal with parties that lie so intensely, so voluminously and so shamelessly? Some say we should afford them the same respect we ourselves would expect. If we call them liars, that might encourage them to lie more given the outrage of being called liars. Better to check their facts, state the truth and move on in hopes that they behave in kind.
This was certainly the thinking behind Frank Bruni's latest, titled "Must We Dance on Rush Limbaugh Grave?" The Times columnist said Sunday that while the radio broadcaster, who died last week, was a white-power racist, sexist, fear-mongering, homophobic crank (not his words), it's crude and rough and, worse of all, "screechy" to say as much about a man recently killed off by the cancer. It's one thing to speak ill of the dead, Bruni wrote, "but the pitch of that ill-speak needn't be screechy. The manner of it needn't be savage. It has more credibility—and I think, more impact—when it's neither of these things. And we preserve some crucial measure of civility and grace."
For four decades, Rush Limbaugh had the biggest media megaphone through which he spit poison every day straight into the ears of 20 million Americans. He lied and lied, and he lied and lied. If there were no Limbaugh, there would be no President Trump, who himself told more than 30,500 lies, falsehoods and misleading claims during four years. Their canon of lies included lies about the covid pandemic, culminating in a death toll now exceeding half a million. Their repertoire of lies included lies about the election, culminating in the worst attack on our government since September 11, 2001. Their stockpile of lies included The Big One repeated Sunday by three GOP senators and one GOP House leader to the detriment of millions of television viewers. How does a republic deal with parties that lie nonstop? There's never been an easy answer. Whatever it is, it's not "civility and grace" alone, because they alone do not work.
It's not that I think Bruni is wrong to remind people to follow the Golden Rule. He's correct, in a purely abstract sense, to say that, "If you're going to fling your opinions at the world, you must be braced for the world to fling its reaction back at you. Those are the terms of the contract." But we are not talking about public morality in the abstract. We are talking about public morality in this place and in this time and in the spirit of defending our republic from ghouls conspiring, and still conspiring, to bring it down. Moreover, a Golden Rule that's wholly decontextualized and dehistoricized can be a gag preventing us from speaking the truth and silencing all but the most powerful.
You know who Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is. During last week's deep freeze in Texas, she started a fundraiser that has raised, as of this writing, more than $4 million to alleviate hunger and suffering in the Lone Star State. She was doing for Texans what you'd think Texans would do for her (and other New Yorkers). But instead of gratitude, the Texas Republican Party answered generosity with slander: "The gesture is appreciated, but it doesn't remove the fact that her Green New Deal philosophy failed Texans," wrote Chairman Allen West. Fact No. 1: The Green New Deal is Ocasio-Cortez's policy idea. It's not anything more yet. Fact No. 2: Texas has nothing to do with her policy idea. Fact No. 3: Wind power accounts for 10 percent of energy use in Texas. Conclusion: West is smearing Ocasio-Cortez even as she's trying to help.
This is clear later when he writes that Ocasio-Cortez's charity is not charity. What appears to be the Golden Rule is actually something sinister. West wrote: "What Texans found out this week is that wind energy, and solar, are not reliable, dependable, and available energy resources. Therefore, ma'am [Ocasio-Cortez], you're not going to buy off Texans for your green new deal energy pipe dream for $2 million" (my italics). Ocasio-Cortez did not blame Texas politicians for the straits they're in. Her pitch has not been "screechy," as Frank Bruni wrote. Her manner has not been "savage." She has been living up to the Golden Rule according to Bruni's advice. But what does she get in return? Lies, slander, contempt, and rancid accusations of trying to "buy off Texans."
Ocasio-Cortez (as well as Beto O'Rourke, who's also raised impressive sums) is modeling what Texans could expect from a government of, by and for the people. That's a threat to corrupt parties like the Texas GOP. It's therefore in the interest of people like West to run Ocasio-Cortez down, even if he comes off as gauche in the process.Fact is, coming off as gauche might be a good thing, as a lack of manners and etiquette and decorum tends to look like authentic strength, and when that's set side-by-side with kindness, authentic strength usually wins though it's a lie. The real problem, West might as well said, isn't that Texas is corrupt. The real problem isn't that the state's government failed its people. The real problem is carpetbaggers and their "New York values" coming down here, making us look bad. That's not nice.
As I said, Bruni isn't wrong in terms of substance. He's wrong in terms of engagement. He's so aloof as to be extraterrestrial. This is the world we live in. This is the world we struggle to change. It's not going to change if truth stops at the border of politeness.

https://www.alternet.org/2020/12/texas-secession/
cody f
after the Supreme Court decisively shut down a lawsuit attempting to overturn the 2020 election, Texas GOP Chair Allen West issued a disturbing statement floating the idea of possible secession over the result.
The case was brought by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, though it was widely panned by legal experts. Some believed that Paxton, currently under investigation by the FBI, was using the lawsuit as a vehicle to win President Donald Trump's favor and obtain a presidential pardon. Despite the lack of merits, the president and his allies rallied behind the lawsuit, with Trump himself calling it "the big one" — apparently trying to distinguish it from the more than 50 additional failed election lawsuits filed on his behalf.
From the start, the lawsuit never had the chance. Paxton tried to exploit a feature of the constitutional system that allows states to sue each other before the Supreme Court. But Paxton's arguments that four key swing states had violated the Constitution in conducting their elections were specious, and there was no reason to take them seriously. The court concluded, unsurprisingly, that Texas didn't even have the standing to bring a challenge to other states on this ground and rejected the argument without it even being officially filed.[2 sorta dissent thomas and ----]
For West, this absolutely predictable and expected result was a galling affront.
“The Supreme Court, in tossing the Texas lawsuit that was joined by seventeen states and 106 US congressman, have decreed that a state can take unconstitutional actions and violate its own election law," he said in a statement. "Resulting in damaging effects on other states that abide by the law, while the guilty state suffers no consequences. This decision establishes a precedent that says states can violate the US constitution and not be held accountable."
[vid?]
this was mostly just a comical tantrum. But the ending became deeply disturbing, as he explicitly floated the idea of seceding from the United States.
He continued: "This decision will have far reaching ramifications for the future of our constitutional republic. Perhaps law-abiding states should bond together and form a Union of states that will abide by the constitution."
This is exactly why many have argued that Trump's disinformation campaign against the election and attempts to overthrow the result are so dangerous. While there was no reason to expect the effort to be successful, it would clearly succeed in convincing millions of Americans, perhaps a majority of Republicans, that the constitutional order was fundamentally broken. That raises the possibility of violence, disorder, and conflict....here is no legitimate way for an American state or group of states to secede from the rest. That's why the American Civil War began. Suggesting secession is essentially threatening war.

right-wing pundit Allen West was elected the chairman of the Texas Republican Party. West has a long history of pushing smears, lies, and toxic rhetoric, especially against Muslims.
West served in the U.S. Army but was “stripped of his command” in 2003 after he pleaded “guilty to assaulting an Iraqi detainee during interrogation,” according to The Boston Globe.Gen. James Mattis, President Donald Trump’s former secretary of defense, reportedly criticized West as a “commander who has lost his moral balance or has watched too many Hollywood movies.” West became a one-term congressman in 2011 and subsequently joined the media as a political commentator. He has also served on the board of the National Rifle Association, which is now plagued by infighting and allegations of financial misdeeds.
West has repeatedly used toxic rhetoric about a variety of topics. He called President Barack Obama an “Islamist” and “disgusting racist"; said the “Democrat Party is an anti-Semitic party”; and falsely accused dozens of congressionalDemocrats of being “members of the Communist Party.” He claimed that Islam “is not a religion” and “we need to have individuals stand up and say that,” and his Facebook page posted (and later removed) an image that claimed Trump had chosen Mattis as his defense secretary to “exterminate Muslims.” He also questioned the “loyalties” of Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), a Purple Heart recipient, and said feminists are “neutering American men and bringing us to the point of this incredible weakness.”
On June 17, West wrote on his website that “folks have called upon me to consider three opportunities here in this next election cycle: run for US Senate, run for US Congressional District 32 (where I have lived since moving to the Dallas area), or run for Chairman of the Republican Party of Texas” and that on July 3, he’ll announce “the opportunity that I will endeavor to pursue.”
Here is a summary of West’s toxic rhetoric (much of the following information was published by Media Matters in December 2016):
West’s toxic history as a military commander and commentator
West was “stripped of his command after pleading guilty to assaulting an Iraqi detainee.”The Boston Globe noted in 2003 that West was “stripped of his command after pleading guilty to assaulting an Iraqi detainee during interrogation. ... The military said that during an interrogation of an Iraqi police officer Aug. 20 near the village of Taji, north of Baghdad, West fired his pistol near the head of the prisoner, threatened to kill him, and allowed his troops to beat the man.” *Boston Globe*, [12/14/03; Media Matters, 2/8/10]
Mattis reportedly called West a “commander who has lost his moral balance or has watched too many Hollywood movies.” Roll Call noted that Mattis reportedly criticized West for his actions as a commander:
West drew Mattis’ scrutiny after he was reprimanded for firing a weapon near the head of prisoner he was interrogating while he was an artillery battalion commander in Iraq in 2003.
In putting together documents to prepare his Marines for deployment to Iraq, Mattis pointed to the case of West as a “commander who has lost his moral balance or has watched too many Hollywood movies,” defense writer Thomas Ricks wrote in his book “Fiasco.” *Roll Call*, [12/6/16]
West left conservative website after he reportedly “had an anti-Semitic exchange with a staffer, calling her a 'Jewish American princess.'”West left the conservative website PJ Media after, according to BuzzFeed, West had “an altercation with a female staffer in which he allegedly called her a 'Jewish American princess.' ... Asked specifically whether he referred to the employee as a 'Jewish American princess,' West said simply, 'There was an exchange, that's all.'” BuzzFeed, [**9/26/13**]
West heavily plagiarized a viral internet story. In a piece attacking the Obama administration for purportedly ignoring the deaths of law enforcement officers, West plagiarized from a viral internet story. He lifted at least six paragraphs (including typos) from the story, which was previously posted on sites like Yahoo! Answers, Free Republic, Facebook, and the comments section of various websites. *Media Matters*, [12/12/14]
West questioned the “loyalties” of decorated veteran and Illinois Sen. Tammy Duckworth. During a 2014 appearance on a conservative radio show, West said of decorated veteran Tammy Duckworth and her position on the Obama administration's response to the 2012 Benghazi attack: “I just don't know where her loyalties lie. You know, for her to have been a veteran, a wounded warrior for the United States Army, she should know that this is not the right thing. And hopefully, you know, she will remember the oath of office that she took as an Army officer and not the allegiance I guess she believes she has to the liberal progressives of the Democrat Party." *Media Matters*, [5/22/14]
West: Islam “is not a religion” and “we need to have individuals stand up and say that."West claimed, “Islam is a totalitarian theocratic political ideology, it is not a religion. It has not been a religion since 622 AD, and we need to have individuals stand up and say that.” *Media Matters*, [**5/17/13**]
West: “The Black community was stronger” and had “better education opportunities” during segregation. Fox Business, *Varney & Co*., [9/28/16]
West’s Facebook page posted an image praising Mattis for alleged plan to “exterminate Muslims.”West’s Facebook page posted an image claiming that Trump picked Mattis for defense secretary in order to “exterminate Muslims.” The editor-in-chief of his website later claimed that the image was posted “without Allen West’s knowledge or consent.” BuzzFeed, [12/11/16]
West called Obama and Holder “vile and disgusting racists.”West wrote of Obama and then-Attorney General Eric Holder: “How long will it be before 'you people' realize you have elevated someone to the office of president who abjectly despises you -- not to mention his henchman Holder. Combined they are the most vile and disgusting racists.” AllenBWest.com, 1/14/14, via [*Media Matters*]
West: “Barack Hussein Obama is an Islamist.”West wrote on his website that Obama “is purposefully enabling the Islamist cause” and concluded: “Sorry, but I can only explain this one way: Barack Hussein Obama is an Islamist in his foreign policy perspectives and supports their cause. You can go back and listen to his 2009 speech in Cairo, where Muslim Brotherhood associates were seated front and center.” West repeated his claim in the media, telling Boston Herald Radio that “deep down inside, you know, Barack Hussein Obama has an Islamist sympathy. ... I don't understand where this president's loyalties lie, and I have to ask the question, whose side is he on?” AllenBWest.com, 8/13/14, via [*Media Matters*; Boston Herald Radio, Trending Now, 8/19/14]
West's response to whether Obama is a Muslim: “The president has an Eastern orientation, I'll put it that way.”At a July 2014 event hosted by Republicans, West didn't dispute an audience member who falsely claimed that “Obama is a Muslim.” Instead, West responded that he's “not going to get into that” but said that the president “has an Eastern orientation, I'll put it that way.” He later added: “Don't care whether or not he's a Muslim. I care about his orientation. And his association.” *Media Matters*, [**7/15/14**]
West said Holder is a “bigger threat” than Al Qaeda. In a fundraising email, West claimed that Holder was a “bigger threat to our Republic” than terrorist Ayman al-Zawahiri, a former deputy of Osama bin Laden. *Media Matters*, [**6/7/13**]
West: The “Democrat Party is an anti-Semitic party.”During an interview on Boston Herald Radio, West claimed Obama was “withholding” aid to Israel, and that the “Democrat Party is an anti-Semitic party.” Boston Herald Radio, *Trending Now*, [**8/19/14**]
West compared Democrats to Nazis and called media “complicit.” West told reporters in December 2011: “If Joseph Goebbels was around, he'd be very proud of the Democrat Party, because they have an incredible propaganda machine. ... Let's be honest, you know, some of the people in the media are complicit with this and enabling them to get that type of message out.” *Media Matters*, [**5/17/13**]
West falsely accused dozens of congressional Democrats of being communists.West accused roughly 80 Democratic House members of being “members of the Communist Party. ... It's called the Congressional Progressive Caucus.” *Media Matters*, [**5/17/13**]
West attacked Gold Star father Khizr Khan for “a damn politicized stunt” when Khan spoke at the Democratic National Convention. *Media Matters*, [8/1/16]
West claimed he was the victim of “Sharia Law” at Walmart because an employee under 21 couldn’t sell him alcohol. West wrote a post originally headlined “Sharia law comes to Walmart?” In the story, he recounted a weekend trip to Walmart, where a “Muslim employee” at the cash register was unable to sell him alcohol. His site later posted an update noting that in reality, “employees under 21 years old are prohibited from selling cigarettes and alcohol.” *Media Matters*, [5/11/15]
West told military personnel to disobey their commander-in-chief. In 2014, the Defense Department announced it would expand an existing program, Military Accessions Vital to National Interest (MAVNI), to allow recruiters “to target foreign nationals with high-demand skills, mostly rare foreign language expertise or specialized health care training.” West responded by telling members of the armed forces to disobey their orders. He wrote: “Barack Hussein Obama took out his pen and ordered our Military to enlist illegal aliens. In other words, this charlatan has allowed those who have disrespected our Constitution and are not citizens to take an oath to support and defend the very document, our rule of law, of which they are in violation.” He added: “This is an illegal order and should not be followed by our Military.” *Media Matters*, [9/26/14]
West invoked slavery to attack Democrats.West has claimed that Democrats are keeping black voters on a “plantation.” He also said that “the Democratic appetite for ever-increasing redistributionary handouts is in fact the most insidious form of slavery remaining in the world today” and Obama would “rather you be his slave.” *Media Matters*, [**5/17/13**]
West agreed with radio host that “Khmer Rouge feminists” are attempting a “coup” against the military. During an appearance on Michael Savage's radio program, West agreed with Savage's assertion that “Khmer Rouge feminists” are attempting a “coup” against the military by proposing to change the military chain of command in sexual assault cases. West also criticized liberals for wanting to “put women into combat arms units ... so that they can meet some socially engineering goal or egalitarian goal.” *Media Matters*, [**6/6/13**]
West: Feminists are “neutering American men.”West criticized liberal women for “neutering American men and bringing us to the point of this incredible weakness” and said, “We are not going to have our men become subservient.” He was also denounced for comments about Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) in which he wrote to her, “You have proven repeatedly that you are not a Lady, therefore, shall not be afforded due respect from me!” *Media Matters*, [**5/17/13**]
West: Focus on kidnapped Nigerian girls is “fishy” and is meant to distract from Benghazi. West wrote a post headlined “Focus on Boko Haram right now seems fishy to me,” which accused the Obama administration of disingenuously caring about the kidnapping of Nigerian schoolgirls by the Boko Haram terrorist organization, claiming the administration was attempting to distract the public from “all the scandals facing the Obama administration, especially Benghazi and the Select Committee.” *Media Matters*, [**5/12/14**]
West: Obama “purposefully creating drama” like Malaysia Airlines MH17 crash. West wrote on his website:
Sadly, hundreds of Ukrainians and 298 souls on MH17 have paid the price for the weakness and abject cowardice of Obama's “flexibility.”
And here in America we quibble over a lawsuit against this charlatan.
The blood on Vladimir Putin's hands was poured by Barack Obama who is indirectly responsible, accountable and no different than Neville Chamberlain's weakness in the face of the 20th Century maniacal dictator Adolf Hitler.
So much for no drama Obama. He is purposefully creating drama globally. AllenBWest.com, 7/18/14, via [***Media Matters***]
West has pushed anti-immigrant rhetoric. West has warned that illegal immigration is like an “invasion into your country.” He's also accused Democratic officials of being “almost treasonous” by inviting undocumented immigrants to attend a hearing on the DREAM Act. *Media Matters*, [**5/17/13**]
West hyped a hoax story of an ISIS-inspired stabbing of teacher at a French preschool. *Media Matters*, [12/14/15]
West said that a group of Black women graduating from West Point who raised their fists in a photo is akin to “white male cadets ... taking a picture with a Confederate flag.” Fox News, *Fox & Friends*, [5/11/16]
West claimed that God has climate change “under control.” In response to people saying that human activity is causing climate change, West said in October 2018: “There’s a creator that's got this under control. But what they're doing is they’re delegitimizing, they're undermining the sovereignty of the creator.” *Media Matters*, [12/29/18]

In one of the Tea Party’s biggest victories, Florida’s Allen West defeatedincumbent Democrat Ron Klein in a rematch of their 2008 race. West, an Army veteran, became a
by criticizing “this tyrannical government” and crying out: “if you’re here to stand up to get your musket, to fix your bayonet, and to charge into the ranks, you are my brother and sister in this fight.” He said that the country was engaging in “class warfare” between “a producing class and an entitlement class,” which is composed of Obama supporters.
While serving in Iraq, he was forced out of the Army for his violent handling of an investigation of a police officer. During the interrogation, West dragged “him outside, pushed his head into the sand, and fired a gun next to his face to get him to sing.” According to West: “It wasn’t torture. Seeing Rosie O’Donnell naked would be torture.”
West also has close ties to the Outlaws motorcycle gang, which an NBC News report found had criminal ties and a website that features a page honoring members who are in prison, extolling “members convicted of violent crimes, including murder.” In a letter, West wrote: “Please, no more references to ‘criminal’ because I can tell you, they have the utmost respect for me and that which I seek to achieve. I was never more amazed at how members of the Outlaws guarded me during a one hour cell phone radio interview.”
West has addressed events sponsored by Outlaws-linked organizations, used Outlaws members to
his rival’s campaign workers, and writes a columnfor the group’s magazine. The magazine, “Wheels on the Road,” has publishedanti-Semitic, racist and sexist material, and once called women “oral relief stations.”
West encouragedhis supporters to use violence in suppressing the votes of opponents, saying, “You’ve got to make the fellow scared to come out of his house.”
He
that it is “unfortunate” that gays and lesbians are serving in the military, and compared homosexuality to adultery. He is also radically anti-choice. On abortion rights, he has said,“I believe all future discussion on this issue should move us toward the elimination of abortion except in the most extraordinary of circumstances,” and accused pro-choice groups of “promot[ing] abortion as a means of birth control.”
West wants to eliminatethe progressive tax system, supportstax cuts for the rich, and calls Wall Street reform a “sham.” He’s advocatedfor eliminating the Departments of Energy and Education.
On immigration, West claims that illegal immigrants
to care in emergency rooms, and that Muslim terrorists are coming through the border with Mexico. West’s first decision as Representative-elect was to choose as his chief of staff right-wing radio talk show host Joyce Kaufman, who called for illegal immigrants to be “hung on the central square.”
A Republican partisan, West said: “I hate big-tent. I hate inclusiveness. And I hate outreach.” West uses extreme rhetoric against Democrats and liberals. He saidthat liberals resented the fact that he saved the lives of American soldiers. On the anti-Islam blog Atlas Shrugs, he wrote that progressives “detest anyone who has the courage of conviction and love of America, something which they find unconscionable.” In the same post, he wrote, “Liberals seek to destroy any institution of intrinsic value: God, country, family, honor, valor, courage, VIRTUE… Why? Because if such things exist, then they must be defended, which brings them back to their fear of action.” He has also claimedthat Democratic combat veterans Joe Sestak and Patrick Murphy “hate the military.”
West
that Obama does not “care for this country” and wants to “make it like some type of third world socialist cesspool,” and is not an American since he grew up in Indonesia and “never played little league baseball.” He
Obama and his “tyrannical government” to the rise of Adolph Hitler and the Nazi party in Germany, and
the Obama Administration a “thugocracy.”
Militantly anti-Muslim, West consistently criticizes Arabs and Muslims. H
that the Bible is evidence the Arabs are a “wild” people: “the Angel of the Lord said to [Hagar]: ‘Behold you are with child, and you shall bear a son, you shall call his name Ishmael, because the Lord has heard your affliction. He shall be a wild man; His hand shall be against everyman, and every man’s hand against him. And he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.’ Ishmael of course became the beginning of the Arab people….and God’s word is immutable truth.”
He has
that there are “thirty-six training camps” run by terrorists inside the US, and that soldiersare becoming “brainwashed” by terrorists who “infiltrated the military.” According to West,
is “not a religion” but a “theo-political belief system and construct” that must be destroyed.

So Allen West Wants to Talk About His Military Record…
Representative Allen West is hitting his opponent for a 2003 arrest—but there’s a much uglier blot on his own record.
By George ZornickTwitterSEPTEMBER 28, 2012
Tea Party superstar Representative Allen West released one of the toughest attack ads of the campaign season on Friday, contrasting his military career with his Democratic opponent’s arrest as a teenager following a drunken bar night—complete with a mug shot:
Transcript:
Feb. 16, 2003, Fort Hood, Texas. Lt. Col. Allen West had just received deployment orders, and prepares his men to go to war. That night, South Beach, Miami: Patrick Murphy is thrown out of a club for fighting, covered in alcohol, and unable to stand. Murphy then confronts and verbally assaults a police officer. Patrick Murphy was arrested and taken to jail. Two men, a country in crisis—you decide.
To make the point even more bluntly, the West campaign put out a press release along with the ad saying that Murphy is a “spoiled brat who knows nothing of duty, honor or service.”
The voters of Florida’s 18th District will have to decide if they want to hold Murphy’s run-in with the law against him. But it’s odd that West trumpets “duty, honor and service” in comparison to the transgression, while touting his military career—because his record there is, by almost any measure, more ignominious than an arrest for drunk and disorderly conduct.
West resigned from the military in 2004, following an incident involving his unit’s treatment of an Iraqi man. West himself was charged with two violations of the Uniform Code of Military Justice, including one against assault, and agreed to retire after an Article 15 hearing in order to avoid a court martial.
According to a 2004 account in The New York Times, West let the soldiers under his command beat the Iraqi man, whom West believed was involved in an attempt on his life. (No evidence was ever found implicating the man). Then, he staged a mock execution:
Soon, the soldiers began striking and shoving Mr. Hamoodi. They were not instructed to do so by Colonel West but they were not stopped, either, they said. ‘I didn’t know it was wrong to hit a detainee,” a 20-year-old soldier from Daytona Beach said at the hearing. Colonel West testified that he would have stopped the beating ”had it become too excessive.”
Eventually, the colonel and his soldiers moved Mr. Hamoodi outside, and threatened him with death. Colonel West said he fired a warning shot in the air and began counting down from five. He asked his soldiers to put Mr. Hamoodi’s head in a sand-filled barrel usually used for clearing weapons. At the end of his count, Colonel West fired a shot into the barrel, angling his gun away from the Iraqi’s head, he testified.
Far from being a scab on his political career, this episode actually helped propel West’s fortunes on the right. He initially became a minor cause célèbre among right-wing bloggers who felt West was being persecuted by those insisting on “political correctness” in a combat zone. West exploited this status as he was running for Congress, appearing on right-wing outlets to denounce the Army’s rules of engagement, which he believed were handcuffing American troops in their battle against the “Islamic enemy.”
West’s campaign was, in fact, a mini-crusade against Islam. On the trail, he declared that “Islam is a totalitarian theocratic political ideology, it is not a religion. It has not been a religion since 622 AD.” He also informed supporters at one town hall that jihad “is not a perversion” of the Koran—“they’re doing exactly what this book says.” Once he arrived in Congress, he singled out Representative Keith Ellison—one of two Muslim colleagues—as someone that “really does represent the antithesis of the principles upon which this country was established.”
But West has rarely returned to the topic of the incident in Iraq that ended his military career since being elected to office. For the same reason his campaign now believes an arrest will hurt Murphy, it’s not going to be helpful to remind voters in the general election that he was charged with assault by the US Army and nearly court-martialed.
But Friday’s ad may have opened the door to that topic. Murphy’s campaign immediately responded by pointing out the episode and that West’s military career wasn’t so “honorable” after all. That’s an attack that could get more play in the weeks ahead—but either way, there’s no doubt this is becoming one of the ugliest and most brutal congressional races in the country.
UPDATE (10/2): Indeed, West’s military career is now a full-fledged campaign issue. The Murphy campaign hit the airwaves today with this spot, which focuses entirely on the incident in Iraq:

Work with Fox News:{:(style="margin-right:0.25em"):}:[edit:{]}:
On May 16, 2013, Fox News announced it had hired West as a contributor to offer political commentary during the network's daytime and prime time shows. In a statement, Executive Vice President of Programming Bill Shine said that West's "congressional and military experience along with his fearless approach to voicing key issues will provide a valuable point of view to the FOX News lineup."[60]
Following the Charleston church shooting in 2015, South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley called for the Confederate Battle flag to be removed from a memorial outside the state capital.[61] West referred to the debate over the flag as a "manufactured crisis" invented by liberals to distract from black-on-black violence.[62]

Right-wing media mocked Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders for linking climate change to terrorism during the November 14 CBS Democratic presidential debate. Sanders explained that if climate change continues to go largely unaddressed, "you're going to see all kinds of international conflict." Right-wing media called Sanders "insane" and "someone who doesn't understand what the real subject is." However, major studies and reports from foreign policy and defense experts support Sanders' assessment that climate change was a significant factor contributing to the rise of ISIL (or ISIS).
During Debate, Bernie Sanders States That Climate Change Is Linked To Terrorism.
Bernie Sanders: Climate Change "Related To The Growth Of Terrorism," And Not Acting Will Lead To "All Kinds Of International Conflict."During the November 14 CBS Democratic presidential debate, moderator John Dickerson asked Sanders about a previous statement that "the greatest threat to national security was climate change." Sanders reaffirmed his position, stating: "Absolutely. In fact, climate change is directly related to the growth of terrorism. And if we do not get our act together and listen to what the scientists say, you're going to see countries all over the world -- this is what the CIA says -- they're going to be struggling over limited amounts of water, limited amounts of land to grow their crops and you're going to see all kinds of international conflict. CBS, CBS Democratic Presidential Debate, [11/14/15]
Sanders Expanded On The Link Between Climate Change And Instability: "People All Over The World Are Going To Be Fighting Over Limited Natural Resources."On the November 15 edition of CBS' Face The Nation, Sanders expanded on the link between climate change and terrorism, as The Washington Post reported:
On Sunday, Dickerson followed up with Sanders as the senator made an appearance on CBS's "Face the Nation," which Dickerson hosts. Sanders said the CIA and the Defense Department back up the notion that climate change can lead to terrorism.
"If we are going to see an increase in drought, flood and extreme weather disturbances as a result of climate change, what that means is that people all over the world are going to be fighting over limited natural resources," Sanders said. "If there is not enough water, if there is not enough land to grow your crops, then you're going to see migrations of people fighting over land that will sustain them, and that will lead to international conflicts."
"But how does drought connect with attacks by [the Islamic State] in the middle of Paris?" Dickerson asked.
"When you have drought, when people can't grow their crops, they're going to migrate into cities, and when people migrate into cities and they don't have jobs, there's going to be a lot more instability, a lot more unemployment and people will be subject to the types of propaganda that al-Qaeda and ISIS are using right now," Sanders said, using an alternative name for the Islamic State. "So where you have discontent, where you have instability, that's where problems arise, and certainly, without a doubt, climate change will lead to that." *The Washington Post*, [**11/15/15**]
Right-Wing Media MockSanders AndCallHis Assessment "Crazy"
Mark Steyn: Sanders' Comments About Climate Change Are "Insane" And Show A Level Of "Delusion And Denial."During the November 16 edition of Fox Business' Varney & Company Mark Steyn mocked Sanders' statements on climate change stating, "al-Baghdadi would be sawing Bernie Sanders' head off, and he'll be saying as his neck is being sliced, "If only we'd had an emissions trading scheme.'" Stein continued by calling Sanders' position "insane" and claiming it shows a level of "delusion and denial":
STUART VARNEY: Here's one for you. Bernie Sanders, well he's doubling down on his claim that there is a link between climate change and terrorism.
[...]
VARNEY: Alright Mark, climate change?
MARK STEYN: Yeah, he's brilliant that guy. I mean, al-Baghdadi will be sawing Bernie Sanders' head off, and he'll be saying as his neck is being sliced, 'If only we'd had an emissions trading scheme.' This is insane and it shows the level of delusion and denial among the Western political leadership.

PEGGY NOONAN: Working against him was, I believe, the fact that last night -- and more strikingly today on your show -- Bernie Sanders essentially said a major problem with all of this ISIS stuff and terrorism and what's going in the West is climate change and global warming. Which makes him -- to many people -- look slightly daffy, like someone who doesn't understand what the real subject is, and is leaning outside to sort of leftist or progressive nostrums that he can talk about. This is about terrorism. It isn't about climate change and deserts and people migrating 'cause it's hot. CBS, *Face The Nation*, [11/15/15]
Fox's Allen West: Sanders "Should Be Completely Discounted" Because Of His Climate Change Comments. On the November 16 edition of Fox News' Fox & Friends:{, contributor Allen West derided Sanders for saying "that he still believes that climate change is the greatest threat that we have out there," citing it as a reason why he and the other two Democratic presidential candidates "should be completely discounted. They're not ready for leadership of this country at this time." Fox News, }:*Fox & Friends*:{, }:[11/16/15:{]}:

PJ Media Equates The Link Between Climate Change AndTerrorism To A "Piece Of Magic." After the CBS Democratic debate, PJ Media mocked Sanders in a November 15 blog post equating the link between climate change and terrorism to a "piece of magic":
- Bernie Sanders thinks climate change causes terrorism.
How this piece of magic works, he didn't get to explain, so we can only imagine. Maybe it 's a hot desert wind making normal people go to extremes, as in the famous opening of Raymond Chandler's "Red Wind":
There was a desert wind blowing that night. It was one of those hot dry Santa Ana's that come down through the mountain passes and curl your hair and make your nerves jump and your skin itch. On nights like that every booze party ends in a fight. Meek little wives feel the edge of the carving knife and study their husbands' necks. Anything can happen. You can even get a full glass of beer at a cocktail lounge.
That global warming -- it will get you every time. ISIS-shmicis. Forget Islam having anything to do with it. Bernie doesn't even want to pronounce the word. But neither, it seems, do any Democrats. I have a suggestion for them. When talking about World War II, don't, under any circumstances, refer to our enemies as Nazis. It's terribly un-PC. Call them National Socialists... oh, wait. The Weekly Standard's Michael Golfarb: No GOP Candidate "Said Anything As Crazy As 'Climate Change To Blame For Terrorism.'" In response to Sanders' answer about ISIL and climate change, The Weekly Standard's Michael Golfarb wrote on twitter that Sanders' argument was "crazy" beyond anything said during the GOP debate:
The Federalist's Brandon Morse: "Who Is Voting For These Nut Jobs" Who Believe Climate Change Causes Terrorism. The Federalist's Brandon Morse mocked Sanders in a tweet, asking, "Who is voting for these nut jobs?":
TIME ReportsThat "Many Academics And National Security Experts Agree" With Sanders
TIME: "Experts Agree That Climate Change Contributes To An Uncertain World Where Terrorism Can Thrive." Following the CBS debate, TIMEreported that although Sanders' comments "attracted ridicule across the political spectrum, many academics and national security experts agree that climate change contributes to an uncertain world where terrorism can thrive":
Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders used the terrorist attacks in Paris to call for action to address climate change at a primary debate Saturday. But, while the plea attracted ridicule across the political spectrum, many academics and national security experts agree that climate change contributes to an uncertain world where terrorism can thrive.
U.S. military officials refer to climate change as a "threat multiplier" that takes issues like terrorism that would pose a threat to national security and exacerbates the damage they can cause. A 2014 Department of Defense report identifies climate change as the root of government instability that leads to widespread migration, damages infrastructure and leads to the spread of disease. "These gaps in governance can create an avenue for extremist ideologies and conditions that foster terrorism," the report says.
The parallels between the situation described in the government report and the situation on the ground in Syria are striking. The worst drought on record in the Middle Eastern country has created instability for farmers and threatened the food supply. At the same time, the government has struggled to hold on to power across the country in the face of militant groups and millions of Syrians have fled their homeland. *TIME*, [**11/15/15**]
Major Research StudiesAnd Experts Back Up Sanders'Assessment That Climate Change Played Direct Role In Syrian Crisis
Study In National Academy Of Sciences Journal: Climate Change Likely Worsened Syrian Drought, Which Helped Cause Civil War. A study from scientists at the University of California, Santa Barbara and Columbia University published in the scientific journal, Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences(PNAS), detailed the likely role climate change played in catalyzing civil unrest in Syria. The authors determined that climate change significantly increased the likelihood of a severe drought like the one that afflicted the region from 2007 to 2010, which was "the worst drought in the instrumental record, causing widespread crop failure and a mass migration of farming families to urban centers." The study found that human-induced climate change made a drought of such severity and persistence "2 to 3 times more likely than by natural variability alone," and concluded that "human influences on the climate system are implicated in the current Syrian conflict." From the study's abstract:
There is evidence that the 2007−2010 drought contributed to the conflict in Syria. It was the worst drought in the instrumental record, causing widespread crop failure and a mass migration of farming families to urban centers. Century-long observed trends in precipitation, temperature, and sea-level pressure, supported by climate model results, strongly suggest that anthropogenic forcing has increased the probability of severe and persistent droughts in this region, and made the occurrence of a 3-year drought as severe as that of 2007−2010 2 to 3 times more likely than by natural variability alone. We conclude that human influences on the climate system are implicated in the current Syrian conflict. *Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences*, [1/30/15]
Pacific Institute Study: "Climate Variability And Change" Played A Role In Causing Syria's Civil War. A 2014 study published in the American Meteorological Society journal Weather, Climate and Society by Pacific Institute President Peter Gleick found that climate change played a role -- among other interrelated factors -- in sparking Syria's civil war. From the study's abstract:
The devastating civil war that began in Syria in March 2011 is the result of complex interrelated factors. The focus of the conflict is regime change, but the triggers include a broad set of religious and sociopolitical factors, the erosion of the economic health of the country, a wave of political reform sweeping over the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) and Levant region, and challenges associated with climate variability and change and the availability and use of freshwater. As described here, water and climatic conditions have played a direct role in the deterioration of Syria's economic conditions. Weather, Climate and Society, [**July 2014**]

Allen West hired as Fox News contributor
By Rachel Weiner, Updated: May 16, 2013
Former congressman Allen West has found a new home on Fox News, where he has been signed on as a contributor.
“Representative West’s congressional and military experience along with his fearless approach to voicing key issues will provide a valuable point of view to the FOX News lineup,” Fox News Vice President Bill Shine said in a statement. West served in the army before running for Congress in 2010.
After serving one term in Congress, West lost last fall to Democrat Patrick Murphy. He announced in January that he would not run in 2014 for the Palm Beach-area House seat. Instead he has pivoted to the media world, hosting a show for the conservative web site Pajamas Media, “Next Generation TV.”

As many as 80 House Democrats are communists, according to Rep. Allen West (R-Fla.)....
West spokeswoman Angela Melvin later defended West's comments -- and clarified to whom West was referring.
"The Congressman was referring to the 76 members of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. The Communist Party has publicly referred to the Progressive Caucus as its allies. The Progressive Caucus speaks for itself. These individuals certainly aren't proponents of free markets or individual economic freedom," Melvin said in a statement to The Huffington Post.

On May 29, 2007, West was the Republican candidate for Congress in Florida's 22nd congressional district, unsuccessfully challenging incumbent Congressman Ron Klein for that seat in the November 2008 elections. He was defeated by a margin of 9.4% of the vote.[16]

West spoke at the Conservative Political Action Conference on February 20, 2010 and was endorsed by former Alaska Governor Sarah Palin.[17] As one of 32 African-American Republican candidates for Congress in 2010, West said he supported the Tea Party movement and dismissed the notion that the movement was motivated by racism as a creation of liberal critics and the news media.[18] West has been described as a "tea party star"[19] became a member of the congressional Tea Party Caucus in February, 2011.[20] West defeated incumbent Ron Klein by a margin of 8.6%. West, along with newly elected Tim Scott, are the first African-American Republicans in Congress since J.C. Watts retired in 2003.[21] West raised $5.4 million for his campaign, while his incumbent opponent raised $2.5 million. According to West, "...over 97 percent of our donations have come from individual contributions."[22][23]
During the campaign, West's opponents accused him of being the only black member of a controversial motorcycle gang with ties to drug trafficking and prostitution; this is a claim that West has ridiculed.[24][25][26][27]
[edit] 2012 election
West raised more than $1.5 million in the second quarter to support his 2012 reelection bid. The majority of West's funding came from individuals, with an average contribution of $66 per person.[28][29][30]
In 2011, the National Journal's Cook Political Report named West one of the top 10 Republicans most vulnerable to redistricting in 2012.[31]
On February 1, 2012, West announced that he will run for reelection from the new 18th Congressional District, which consists of a majority of the current 16th Congressional District. This comes in the wake of Representative Tom Rooney switching from the 16th Congressional District to the 17 Congressional District. This move is considered to dramatically improve West's chances of reelection, though it will likely still be a competitive race.[32]
[edit] Congressional Black Caucus
West joined the Congressional Black Caucus on January 5, 2011. He is the first Republican to join the caucus since former Congressman Gary Franks retired in 1997.[33]
[edit] Committee assignments
West has been appointed to the House Armed Services Committee and the Small Business Committee.[34]
