The long list of lawsuits involving Hollinger International and its former chief executive, Conrad M. Black, grew even longer yesterday.

Hollinger Inc., the Toronto holding company that controls Hollinger International, filed suit against Lord Black and his privately held company, the Ravelston Corporation. Hollinger Inc. is seeking 636 million Canadian dollars ($524.6 million), asserting financial misconduct.

The suit, filed in the Ontario Superior Court of Justice by Hollinger and a subsidiary, asks for 550 million Canadian dollars in damages and reimbursements for management fees and other payments that it said were diverted from Hollinger Inc. to Ravelston, the largest shareholder of Hollinger Inc.

The suit also demands 86 million Canadian dollars plus interest, to cover the costs of a continuing court-ordered investigation into Hollinger Inc. by the accounting firm Ernst & Young and for the costs of a failed attempt by Lord Black to take Hollinger Inc. private.

In a statement provided by a Ravelston spokesman, James Badenhausen, the company said the suit merely rehashed existing litigation.

"We have made clear that we believe those actions are without merit and that we look forward to the opportunity to try them in a court of law," the company said. "Virtually all of the matters that are now alleged to be improper, such as the payment of management fees, were fully known by the independent directors of Hollinger Inc. at the time. We are confident that, as with those other suits, we will prevail in this case."

Ravelston had hoped to take Hollinger Inc. private by acquiring the 22 percent of the company that it did not already own, but the Ontario Securities Commission blocked that plan on Monday. The commission said it was enforcing its decision last year to freeze trading in Hollinger Inc. shares by Lord Black and other executives until its financial statements were brought up to date.

Lord Black stepped aside as chairman and chief executive of Hollinger Inc. in November in an attempt to smooth the road to a deal. If he had taken Hollinger Inc. private, the company would have been subject to fewer regulatory requirements like publishing quarterly financial results.

Lord Black also controlled Hollinger International, the Chicago-based publisher of The Chicago Sun-Times, until he resigned as chief executive under pressure in 2003, when an internal committee concluded that he had used company money for personal gain. Lord Black has denied the accusations.

Edward Greenspan, a lawyer for Lord Black, did not respond to a message left late yesterday.

In addition to Lord Black and Ravelston, the suit names as defendants other entities controlled by Lord Black -- Ravelston Management, Moffatt Management and Black-Amiel Management -- as well as F. David Radler, Jack A. Boultbee and Peter Y. Atkinson, former executives at Hollinger Inc.

The new lawsuit adds to the tangle of litigation and investigations surrounding Lord Black and Hollinger International.
