as an ever-greater portion of the nation’s total wealth goes to the top, it’s hardly surprising that ever more of that wealth is corrupting American politics.
In the 2020 presidential election cycle, more than $14 billion went to federal candidates, party committees, and Super PACs — double the $7 billion doled out in the 2016 cycle.
Total giving in 2024 is bound to be much higher.
Most of that money is not supporting American democracy. Increasingly, it is supporting Donald Trump and his anti-democracy allies.
There is a certain logic to this.
As more and more wealth accumulates at the top, the moneyed interests fear that democratic majorities will take it away through higher taxes, stricter regulations (on everything from trade to climate change), enforcement of anti-monopoly laws, pro-union initiatives, and price controls.
So they’re sinking ever more of their wealth into anti-democracy candidates.
Donald Trump is going full fascist these days, and gaining the backing of prominent billionaires.
On Veterans Day, Trump pledged to “root out the communists, Marxists, fascists and the radical left thugs that live like vermin within the confines of our country,” whom he accused of doing anything “to destroy America and to destroy the American dream.” (Notably, he read these words from a teleprompter, meaning that they were intentional rather than part of another impromptu Trump rant.)
Days before, Trump claimed that undocumented immigrants were “poisoning the blood of our country.” The New York Times reports that he’s planning to round up millions of undocumented immigrants and detain them in sprawling camps while they wait to be expelled.
Trump has publicly vowed to appoint a special prosecutor to “ go after” President Joe Biden and his family, and has told advisers and friends that he wants the Justice Department to investigate officials who have criticized his time in office.
This is, quite simply, full-throated neofascism.
Who’s bankrolling all this? While Trump’s base is making small contributions, the big money is coming from some of the richest people in America.
During the first half of the year, multiple billionaires donated to the Trump-aligned Make America Great Again Inc. Super PAC.
Phil Ruffin (net worth $3.4 billion), the 88-year-old casino and hotel mogul, has given multiple $1 million donations.
Charles Kushner (family net worth $1.8 billion), the real estate mogul and father of Jared, who received a late-term pardon from Trump in December 2020, contributed $1 million in June.
Robert “Woody” Johnson (net worth $3.7 billion), Trump’s former ambassador to the United Kingdom and co-owner of the New York Jets, donated $1 million to the MAGA PAC in April.
And so on.
But Trump is not the only extremist pulling in big dollars. Nikki Haley — who appears moderate only relative to Trump’s blatant neofascism — proclaimed in her campaign launch that President Biden is promoting a “socialist” agenda.
During her two years as U.N. ambassador under Trump, Haley was a strong proponent of his so-called “zero tolerance” policy, under which thousands of migrant children were separated from their parents and guardians. She supported Trump’s decision to pull out of the U.N. Human Rights Council and to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal.
Though she briefly criticized Trump for inciting the mob that attacked the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, Haley soon defended Trump and called on Democratic lawmakers to “give the man a break” when they impeached him for a second time.
Haley recently told Kristen Welker of NBC’s “Meet the Press” that while Trump’s floating the idea of executing retired General Mark Milley might be “ irresponsible,” it does not disqualify him from running for the White House again.
Haley’s billionaire supporters include Stanley Druckenmiller, Eric Levine, and Republican megadonor Ken Griffin.
Notably, Haley has also gained the support of JPMorgan Chase’s chief executive, Jamie Dimon, who’s about as close as anyone in America comes to being a spokesperson for the business establishment. Dimon admires Haley’s recognition of the role that “business and government can play in driving growth by working together.”
The moneyed interests have been placing big bets on other Trumpist Republicans.
Peter Thiel, the multibillionaire tech financier who once wrote that “I no longer believe that freedom and democracy are compatible,” contributed more than $35 million to 16 federal-level Republican candidates in the 2022 campaign cycle, making him the 10th largest individual donor to either party.
Twelve of Thiel’s candidates won, including Ohio’s now Senator J.D. Vance, who alleged that the 2020 election was stolen and that Biden’s immigration policy has meant “ more Democrat voters pouring into this country.”
Republican House Majority Leader Steve Scalise is creating a new fundraising committee that will be soliciting contributions of up to $586,200 a pop.
Elon Musk is not a major financial contributor to Trump nor other anti-democracy candidates, but his power over one of the most influential megaphones in America gives him inordinate clout — which he is using to further the neofascist cause.
Witness Musk’s solicitude of Trump, his endorsement of antisemitic posts, his embrace of Tucker Carlson and white replacement theory, and his avowed skepticism toward democracy.
Democracy is compatible with capitalism only if democracy is in the driver’s seat, so it can rein in capitalism’s excesses.
But if capitalism and its moneyed interests are in charge, those excesses grow to the point where they are able to extinguish democracy and ride roughshod over the common good.
Hence the reason Trump’s neofascism, and the complicity of today’s Republican Party with it, are attracting the backing of some of the richest people in America.
What’s the alternative? A loud pro-democracy movement that fights against concentrated wealth at the top, enormous CEO pay packages, a politically powerful financial sector, and tax cuts for the wealthy and large corporations.
And fights for higher taxes on the top (including a wealth tax) to finance Medicare for all, affordable housing, and accessible child care and elder care.
The willingness to make this a fight — to name the moneyed interests backing neofascism, explain why they’re doing this, and mobilize and energize America against their agenda and in favor of democracy — is critical to winning the 2024 election and preserving and rebuilding American democracy.
Biden and the Democrats must take this on, loudly and clearly. (Incidentally, Biden’s age — Happy 81st, Joe! — would be far less of an issue if he showed the grit and guts to do this.)

when Donald Trump was serving as president, then-First Lady Melania Trump didn't go out of her way to be in the spotlight. She kept a relatively low profile compared to many first ladies of the past — from Michelle Obama to Nancy Reagan to Betty Ford to Eleanor Roosevelt — and she was very selective about who she granted interviews to.
Nonetheless, Melania Trump, now 53, has made select speeches since leaving the White House. According to New York Times reporters Shane Goldmacher and Maggie Haberman, a Donald Trump-associated super-PAC called Make America Great Again, Again paid her $155,000 for one of those speeches in late 2021.
"The money was listed as pay for a 'speaking engagement' by Ms. Trump in the new filing, a personal financial disclosure by Mr. Trump," Goldmacher and Haberman explain in a report published on July 14. "The $155,000 payment was made in December 2021 by Make America Great Again, Again, which at the time, was Mr. Trump'sleading super PAC.Ms. Trump's name, however, did not appear on the super-PAC's list of expenditures, which were made public last year. "

The reporters add, "Instead, the super PAC's report showed two payments, for $125,000 and $30,000, to 'Designer's Management Agency,' which lists Ms. Trump as a client on its website. The payments were made on December 2 and December 3, 2021; in the new disclosure, Mr. Trump reported that Ms. Trump was paid $155,000 on December 2, 2021."
Goldmacher and Haberman note that the $155,000 payment is "unusual" because it is "rare for the spouse of a potential presidential candidate to be paid directly by a campaign or an outside group affiliated with the candidate."
"This is not the first time a political committee connected to Mr. Trump has made a payment related to his wife," according to the Times reporters. "Ms. Trump's stylist was paid $132,000 in 2022 by Save America, a political action committee that became the vehicle to park tens of millions of dollars raised by Mr. Trump in the weeks after the 2020 election. As he made false claims of widespread election fraud, he received small-dollar contributions from supporters who wanted to help him fight to stay in office."

A federal inquiry is shedding light on the mysterious financial connection between more than a dozen political committees and dark money organizations aligned with former President Donald Trump.
According to The Daily Beast, the issues with the organizations also appear to be connected to former Trump White House aide Corey Lewandowski. In fact, the news outlet reports that: "Anyone who’s taken even the quickest of peeks at Trump’s personal financial disclosures would recognize the pattern."
Speaking to The Beast, Brendan Fischer, deputy executive director of the government accountability organization, Documented, weighed in with details about the extent of the questionable nature of these Trump-aligned organizations.
Per The Beast, a list of more than 12 political committees and dark money groups has been released. In fact, all of the organizations contain similar names and wording.
- Make America Great Again PAC (converted from the old Trump campaign)
- Make America Great Again Action (super PAC)
- Make America Great Again, Again! (super PAC)
- Trump Make America Great Again (small-dollarjoint fundraising committee)
- Make America Great Again Policies Inc (a 501(c)(4) nonprofit)
- America First Policy Institute (a 501(c)(3) nonprofit)
- America First Works (formerly America First Policies; a 501(c)(4) nonprofit)
- America FirstLegal Foundation(a 501(c)(3) nonprofit)
- America First Action (super PAC)
- Save America (leadership PAC)
- Save America JFC (joint fundraising committee)
- Trump Victory (high-dollar joint fundraising committee)
“Typically, former presidents focus on their presidential library, or start a charitable foundation, but Trump is staying in the political game and raising a staggering amount of cash,” Fischer said.
“It is worth emphasizing: All of this is totally unprecedented for a former president,” Fischer told The Daily Beast. “Even if Trump kept it simple, and just had one hard money PAC, asingle super PAC, and a pair of 501(c)(3)/501(c)(4) nonprofits, there would be no parallel with any former president in American history.”
The handling of each organization also includes distinctive activity patterns which The Beast has pointed out.
"His first such disclosure revealed positions with more than 500 entities, nearly 400 of which used his name or initials. And Trump has 'organized' the mess in a stultifying Russian-nesting-doll structure—companies within companies within companies. Frequently, one company will be held under multiple Trump companies at the same time, each with stakes in still other Trump companies."
It has also been noted that the structure of each entity has given the Trump Organization a substantial advantage for "financial flexibility while making it difficult to follow the billions of dollars that Trump, his family, and his accountants move across the organization."
Brett Kappel, a campaign finance specialist who also focuses on nonprofit law for Harmon Curran, offered his assessment of the situation.
“The central lesson of Watergate is ‘Follow the money,’” Kappel told the news outlet. “And this byzantine structure of different types of legal entities—which are subject to different fundraising restrictions and file different reports with different agencies according to different filing schedules—appears to be designed to make that task as difficult as possible.”

make America Great Again PAC (MAGA PAC) was a pro-Donald Trump **Super PAC**. It was established in July 2015 by Leslie Caldwell. The super PAC filed termination paperwork on July 6, 2016, with the FEC and refunded over a $1 million to its donors.[1][2]
Background
Founded in July 2015, Make America Great Again PAC (MAGA PAC) was a pro-Donald Trump Super PAC established by Leslie Caldwell. According to the FEC Statement of Organization, Caldwell was the custodian of record and treasurer.[3]
In October 2015, the super PAC announced it intended to shut down. Mike Ciletti, the group's director, said at the time, "Mr. Trump has said he doesn’t have a super PAC. So to honor his wishes, I’m shutting my organization down."[4] On July 6, 2016, MAGA PAC filed for termination with the FEC, effectively ending the super PAC. The super PAC refunded $1,033,000 to its donors.[2][1]
Finances
2016
According to documents filed with the Federal Election Commission, Make America Great Again PAC reported $157,714 in total receipts and $109,350 in total disbursements during calendar year 2016 prior to filing for termination.[5]
2015
According to documents filed with the Federal Election Commission, Make America Great Again PAC reported $1,742,684 in total receipts and $1,584,969 in total disbursements during calendar year 2015.[6]
Noteworthy donors
Phillip Ruffin, who contributed $1 million, is the owner of Treasure Island Resort and Casino in Las Vegas, while Seryl Kushner, who gave $100,000 is Trump's daughter Ivanka Trump's mother-in-law.[7][8] The Washington Post noted that "Make America Great Again eventually refunded Ruffin's money and a few other contributions in December after spending about half a million dollars on consulting, legal expenses, travel, polling and other costs."[1] Below is a list of the top five donors in 2015.

Legal status
Make America Great Again PAC was asuper PAC. A super PAC is a political committee that can solicit and spend unlimited sums of money. A super PAC cannot contribute directly to a politician or political party, but it can spend independently to campaign for or against political figures. These committees are also called independent expenditure-only committees. A super PAC is not legally considered a political action committee (PAC) and as such is regulated under separate rules.[10][11]
Noteworthy events
Alleged connections to Trump campaign
On October 20, 2015, The Washington Post reported that there were several connections between the super PAC and Trump's campaign.[12] Mike Ciletti, who was a consultant for the super PAC according to Politico, had also received payments from the Trump campaign for consulting work.[13] Such interaction is permissible by law, provided that precautions are taken to guarantee that no coordination takes place between the two organizations. The Washington Post also reported that the super PAC used donor information obtained through the campaign to generate their own fundraising list.[13][12]
Former staffer comments
In an interview on March 24, 2016, Stephanie Cegielski, a former spokeswoman for the group, stated, “I am glad [Trump] has brought more people to the political process but I question his ability to be the leader of this country."[14]
In an open letter on March 28, 2016, Cegielski explained why she no longer supported Trump:[15]
| “ | I don't think even Trump thought he would get this far. And I don’t even know that he wanted to, which is perhaps the scariest prospect of all. He certainly was never prepared or equipped to go all the way to the White House, but his ego has now taken over the driver's seat, and nothing else matters. ... His ego has now taken over the driver's seat, and nothing else matters. The Donald does not fail. The Donald does not have any weakness. The Donald is his own biggest enemy. ... Trump acts as if he’s a fictional character. But like Hercules, Donald Trump is a work of fiction. |

Trump’s PAC Keeps Losing Money. His Lawyers Keep Cashing In.
BAR TAB
Donald Trump’s campaign keeps on losing money because he’s just using it to pay his legal fees.
Roger Sollenberger
Political Reporter
Updated Apr. 19, 2022 5:09AM ET / Published Apr. 19, 2022
For the third straight quarter, Donald Trump’s former campaign committee turned in a fundraising loss, shedding $1.2 million to start 2022. And the reason for almost all of the Trump campaign’s money problems is a familiar one: lawyers.
:{
}:
According to a campaign finance disclosure filed in recent days, the committee—“Make America Great Again PAC“—handed over about $1.1 million in legal fees between January and the end of March.
:{
}:
That’s more than 40 percent of the PAC’s $2.6 million in total expenses, for the PAC’s biggest deficit since Trump left office. The $1.4 million it raised barely covered its legal bills.
[Trump’s New Super PAC Is Paying Off His Usual Suspects—Again
KEYSER SOZE
Roger Sollenberger]
The loss cut MAGA PAC’s cash on hand from about $6.66 million at year’s end to around $5.47 million as of March 31. The committee, which Trump converted from his old campaign after leaving office, now holds about half the $10.7 million it had at the start of 2021.
In the first half of the year, fresh off of election challenges and an impeachment trial, MAGA PAC ate the vast majority of Trump’s political legal costs—about $7.8 million of the $8 million total. The payouts plummeted in the back half of 2021, with a total $1.7 million spread over those six months, indicating another uptick to kick off 2022.
The biggest winner this quarter was Jesse Binnall, Trump’s top election challenger, whose firm clocked $410,000 for its services. Binnall farms some of those fees out to local counsel, whose names aren’t listed on the reports. One such firm is the Tulsa, Oklahoma, shop Hall Estill, which Binnall retained last year to assist in an ongoing lawsuit alleging civil rights violations at Trump’s COVID comeback rally in June 2020.
MAGA PAC also paid its customary retainer to Elections LLC, a joint venture between three former top campaign aides, which now commands $52,500 a month. (Trump’s Save America joint fundraising committee retains Elections LLC as well.)
Combined, Elections LLC and Binnall’s firm—including the anonymous local subcontractors—absorbed more than half the legal costs on the quarter.
:{
}:
The spike in attorney fees comes after a significant dropoff late last year. That decrease coincided with a rise in the Republican National Committee’s costs, after the GOP agreed to foot Trump’s legal expenses in ongoing investigations into his business practices—up to $1.6 million.
The rest of MAGA PAC’s $2.6 million expense report included the committee’s biggest single payout: $590,000 to a company called 2M Document Management and Imaging, LLC, itemized for “research consulting.”
[Trump PAC Lavishing $37K a Month on Trump Tower Rent: WaPo
DONATIONS WELL SPENT]
In all, the secretive Delaware-based entity pocketed about $1.17 million last quarter, already nosing near its 2021 total of $1.6 million. No other political committee has ever paid the company, according to federal data.
Trump’s trifurcated fundraising streams can be tough to follow.Last week, there was a second filing in addition to MAGA PAC, this one from the joint fundraising vehicle Trump shares with the RNC, called Save America—the same name as his leadership PAC. That group raised a total $19 million this quarter, which gets split between Trump groups and the RNC.
Unlike MAGA PAC, however, the joint committee came out on top. It racked up about $8.6 million in operating costs, less than half its haul. Most of that money went to fundraising consultants and advertisers, and unlike MAGA PAC reported no legal fees—outside of a monthly $20,000 to Elections LLC. The committee currently holds about $6.4 million.
But we won’t have a complete picture of Trump’s finances until later this week, whenhis largest account—Save America leadership PAC, with $110 million in the bank—files its monthly report. We do know that it pulled at least $5.1 million in new transfers from the joint committee.
[Trumpy PAC Guy Rants About Hillary as Feds Bust Ponzi Scheme
‘THERMONUCLEAR WAR’
Justin Rohrlich]
But as confounding as that all is, one MAGA PAC payment stands out as particularly curious: the one rent check made out to Trump Tower.
While the amount is the normal monthly rate of $37,541.67, there’s only one payment instead of the expected three. And it went to a curious destination—not Trump Tower itself, but a P.O. box in Hicksville, New York, a Long Island town an hour from Fifth Avenue.
:{
}:
The campaign’s rent checks have vacillated over the years between Trump Tower and Hicksville, seemingly at random, with no explanation. However, that mailbox is a short drive from Trump’s longtime accountants, Mazars USA.
MAGA PAC’s last rent check was made out Feb. 11. Three days later, Mazars dropped Trump as a client, citing unreliable financial statements.
