Accoring to his New Media Journal profile, Sheppard was "born and bred by East Coast liberals," attended the University of California at Berkeley, and "still end[ed] up becoming a card-carrying member of the Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy ...

"[I]n 1980, after decades of leftist indoctrination, Noel Sheppard was offered what ended up being a realigning and career altering position on the Options Floor of the Pacific Stock Exchange coincidentally and fortuitously months before Ronald Reagan was elected as our 40th president. Thus began twenty-four sometimes excruciating years of radical deprogramming, for, whilst on the exchange, Noel was, for the first time in his life, exposed to Conservative views that he had been taught to shun and abhor practically since birth.

"Once he started working with Merrill Lynch’s options arbitrage division, Noel began years of exhaustive research into economic, trend, and technical analysis. His forte was correlating economic data with commodity price fluctuations in order to forecast Federal Reserve monetary policy as well as the direction of bonds, interest rates, and currency and equity valuations.

"Eventually, Noel became a financial consultant, a branch vice president for a bank, and, finally, started his own legal and financial estate planning family of companies with offices in Northern and Southern California. During this period, as almost a hobby, Noel applied his analytical skills to examine in great detail the recent and historical Federal Budgets of the U.S. Government. The more these experiences taught him about the inner workings of the American economy, the banking system, the securities industry, as well as fiscal and monetary policy, the more Noel began to realize that the liberal dogma he had been adhering to and fighting for in his youth was largely based in fallacious, and oftentimes, intentional misrepresentations by the left and the media that supports them.
"As a result, Noel – who resides in a thankfully Conservative suburb outside of San Francisco with his wife and two children - has dedicated his life to assisting the Conservative voices in our nation in better educating Americans of the political and economic truths that have been for years withheld from them. Only this way can we further the expansion of democracy, capitalism, and freedom throughout the world."

Global warming activism

Sheppard has used his NewsBusters posts in particular to attack the idea that global warming is caused by humans.[1] Sheppard has also accused Al Gore of being involved in global warming activism solely to make money from it.[2]

One of NewsBusters' most prolific bloggers -- and most prolific purveyors of bias and misinformation -- is Noel Sheppard.
ConWebWatch has documented his hand in promulgating or botching various issues, from promoting dubious claims about Iran then refusing to retract them when they proved to be false, to attacking critics for pointing out the flaws of the TV movie "The Path to 9/11," to telling a biased account of the controversy between conservative radio host Melanie Morgan, along with her fellow hosts on San Francisco station KSFO, and a blogger named Spocko.

In addition to his MRC writings at NewsBusters and the Business and Media Institute, Sheppard calls himself "an economist, business owner, and a featured writer at the prestigious American Thinker." But his NewsBusters writings tend to be so flawed that they don't reflect well on his other work.
While Sheppard has done the occasional good thing -- in late January, he engaged in an unprecedented (for NewsBusters, at least) dialogue with liberal activist Mike Stark over the Spocko/KSFO story -- the bad has outweighed the good. We'll break it down into a few major categories. (Sheppard's misinformation on global warming can be found here.)

Incomplete reporting

A May 8 NewsBusters post by Sheppard began this way: "If Democrats had accused former House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-Illinois) last year of earmarking funds that could help real estate investments owned by his wife, would the media have reported it?" He continued: "Well, the Associated Press published a story Monday about current House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-California) possibly earmarking funds that would benefit her husband's investments around the San Francisco Bay."
Note the weasel words above -- which we've italicized -- showing that Sheppard has no actual evidence that the earmarked money actually does benefit Pelosi's husband's investments. And in a fit of censorship, Sheppard reprinted a news article on the subject but chopped out comments from Pelosi's office that put the situation in context, quoting aides to Pelosi "noting that the waterfront improvements were requested by the Port of San Francisco and the four rental properties in question are at least a mile away." Indeed, given that a mile typically comprises 12 to 16 city blocks, that's a long walk from Pelosi's investments to the port, making it unlikely that Pelosi would benefit.
Sheppard performed more censorship in quoting from a New York Post article about the earmark, repeating Republican congressman Jeb Hensarling's statement, "The appearance is obviously not good, and she needs to be forthcoming about how this impacts her financial interest," but deleting the next paragraph in which the Post writes, "He didn't offer proof that Pelosi would benefit." Sheppard also excised a statement from Pelosi's spokesman, who pointed out that "1.1 miles is a long way in San Francisco. ... This isn't stuff that she pushed, this is what the port came to her with."
Further, Sheppard quoted from a Congressional Quarterly article in which an anonymous "senior Republican aide" says, "If Tiger Woods teed a ball up at Pelosi’s million-dollar rental property, he could easily hit the earmark in two strokes, with a slight draw to avoid the water." That's an absurd claim, which Sheppard should know since he, again, censored the part stating that that the property is more than a mile away. Do any golf courses have a par-2, 1,800-yard green, a feat beyond even Tiger's abilities? Perhaps Sheppard knows of one.

Another example: In a May 22 NewsBusters post on John Edwards receiving a $55,000 fee to give a college commencement speech, Sheppard wrote, "If a Republican presidential candidate like Rudy Giuliani or John McCain charged a $55,000 fee to speak at a major university about poverty, would the media be all over it like white on rice?" In fact, as Media Matters noted, Giuliani received nearly double that to give a commencement speech: He reportedly charged Oklahoma State University $100,000 for a speech he delivered in 2006 and an additional $47,000 for the use of a private Gulfstream jet. The Chicago Tribune added that his visit "essentially wiped out the student speakers annual fund." Additionally, according to the Tribune, Giuliani's speech deal at Oklahoma State "also required a sedan and an SUV, restrictions on news coverage and control over whom Giuliani would meet, how he would be photographed and what questions he might be asked." The Tribune added:

Like other high-priced speakers in the private sector, Giuliani routinely travels in style. Besides the Gulfstream, which is a standard perk on the big-time speakers circuit, his contract calls for up to five hotel rooms for his entourage, including his own two-bedroom suite with a preferred balcony view and king-size bed, in the event of an overnight stay.

In a Sept. 25, 2006, NewsBusters post, Sheppard wrote that when Bill Clinton launched an attack on Sudan in 1998 at the height of the Monica Lewinsky scandal, "the press was abuzz with the possibility that Clinton had performed these attacks to distract the American people from his extracurricular activities much as in the movie Wag the Dog." Sheppard was quick to do some quote-mining to dismiss the claim: "Were there high-ranking Republicans that piled on this assertion? Hardly."
A check of the MRC archives, though, would haver revealed that Sheppard's employer piled on the "Wag the Dog" assertion by criticizing media outlets who dismissed it:

In an Aug. 21, 1998, CyberAlert, Brent Baker noted that "every network did raise the 'Wag the Dog' scenario" in their coverage of the Sudan bombing strike. But Baker seemed unhappy that "CBS questioned the lack of 'bipartisan patriotism.' "

A Sept. 7, 1998, MRC MediaWatch headlined "Reporters Recoil at Thought of Missiles as Scandal Scuttlers" began: "Three days after admitting a sexual affair with Monica Lewinsky, Bill Clinton authorized cruise-missile attacks on suspected terrorist sites in Afghanistan and Sudan. Was this attack intended to divert attention from Monicagate?" The MRC seemed to concur: "If the timing had been a cynical damage control strategy, it surely worked in the short run: From Thursday to Sunday, the evening shows on ABC, CBS, NBC, and CNN carried 78 stories on the attack to just six Lewinsky pieces."

In an Aug. 10, 1999, MagazineWatch item, Tim Graham beat up on a U.S. News & World Report writer who claimed that a "reporter who demanded to know if Defense Secretary William Cohen had seen the movie Wag the Dog" was a sign of "the reliable inanity of the Washington press corps." Graham responded by suggesting that dismissing the "Wag the Dog" claim meant dismissing any questions about the Sudan strike: "Reporters who lapped up Peter Arnett's tales of bombing Iraqi baby-milk factories found it somehow suddenly unpatriotic to follow up on this still largely unknown story."

Misleading about polls

In an Oct. 10, 2006, NewsBusters post, Sheppard was apoplectic that in a Washington Post/ABC News poll, in his words, "41 percent more Democrats were questioned for this survey than Republicans," claiming that it is "absolutely shameful that any polling organization would do such a poor job of evenly distributing respondents by political affiliation." Nine days later, Sheppard attacked another poll for the sin of having a similar political breakdown of respondents. Sheppard wrote the following about it:

For example, as is typical these days, news organizations don’t like to share the political affiliations of those questioned. Certainly, you can’t blame them, for this might give the public some pause to trust the veracity of the data. This instance was no exception, for those that were either “strong Democrat,” “Not very strong Democrat,” or “Independent/lean Democrat” totaled 43 percent of the respondents. The tally for “Strong Republican,” “Not very strong Republican,” and “Independent/lean Republican” was only 37 percent. As such, 16 percent more Democrats or those who leaned Democrat were polled versus Republicans and those who leaned Republican. Color me not surprised.

In fact, poll samples that include more Democrats than Republicans accurately reflects reality. Even Republican strategist (and, not insignificantly, columnist for the MRC's CNSNews.com) Rich Galen admits that "[i]n the general population, those who claim to be Democrats outweigh those who claim to be Republicans by 7 to 9 percentage points." It skews the poll to have an even number of Democrats and Republicans, as Sheppard demands. While having an equal number of Democrats and Republicans in a poll sample would reflect registered voters, it does not reflect the public at large, from which most polls draw.
(This misleading line of reasoning may be an MRC thing; a March 2, 2006, "Media Reality Check" by Tim Graham made a similar claim about "weighted" polls.)

Double standards

An April 15 NewsBusters post complained that "when the New Black Panther Party leader Malik Shabazz called Fox News contributor Michelle Malkin a 'political prostitute' on Thursday's 'O'Reilly Factor,' the media largely ignored the event." Sheppard made no mention of the lack of coverage given when Glenn Beck called Cindy Sheehan "a pretty big prostitute." Or when Michael Savage called Barbara Walters a "double-talking slut." Or when Savage called Diane Sawyer a "lying whore." In fact, Sheppard himself didn't criticize those remarks either.
In an April 6 NewsBusters post suggesting that Nancy Pelosi's visit to Syria violated federal law, Sheppard asked: "Do you think the media would have been as forgiving of Speaker Gingrich if he had so behaved when Clinton was president?" In fact, In March 1997, then-House Speaker Newt Gingrich went to China without the authorization of the Clinton administration, where he warned China's top leaders that the United States would intervene militarily if Taiwan was attacked -- a position presumably not authorized by Clinton. As blogger Glenn Greenwald noted, the media didn't get particularly worked up about that. Further, as Greg Sargent added, conservatives such as Pat Buchanan and John Boehner who criticized Pelosi's visit endorsed Gingrich's trip to China.
In a Jan. 27 NewsBusters post, Sheppard took up the cause of Peter Paul, the corrupt businessman who's suing Hillary Clinton over alleged "campaign finance fraud." But Sheppard made no mention of the fact that Paul is a convicted felon awaiting sentencing for stock fraud. Perhaps that's because Sheppard used WorldNetDaily as a source for his post; WND has repeatedly whitewashed Paul's long criminal record.

In a Jan. 24 NewsBusters post, Sheppard wrote, "Here’s something you don’t see every day: a columnist at a liberal newspaper saying bad things about Democrats." But the columnist in question, the Boston Globe's Jeff Jacoby, is a conservative and has been for years. Nevertheless, Sheppard continued: "No, folks. This isn’t from the National Review, the Weekly Standard, or the Washington Times. This really is an article by Jeff Jacoby, who writes for a paper owned by The New York Times Company." In fact, Jacoby has written for the Globe since 1994. It would be more shocking to see a weekly liberal columnist at NewsBusters' MRC sister site, CNSNews.com.
In a Jan. 21 NewsBusters post, Noel Sheppard claimed it was "shocking" that Chris Matthews referred to Hillary Clinton as "Dukakis in a dress" -- thus calling her "a female incarnation of one of the biggest left-wing failures in decades" -- despite the fact that Matthews had called Clinton that at least four times previously.
In a Nov. 7, 2006, NewsBusters post, Sheppard claimed that "the media have been wrongly depicting" the use of "robo-calls" by political candidates "as exclusively being a Republican strategy, while ignoring the Democrat campaigns that are doing exactly the same thing." But Sheppard conflated the general use of robo-calls -- a strategy both parties use -- with the debate is over certain tactics used in them. The only relevant counter-example Sheppard cites in response to a CNN report claiming that the National Republican Congressional Committee was making robo-calls in which the message didn't identify the caller at the top of the call and include a phone number -- both required by the FCC -- is a robo-call against Montana Sen. Conrad Burns made by "the international firefighters union’s political action committee." But an independent PAC is not the same thing as a direct party operation, which the NRCC is. Further, the CNN report Sheppard cited also noted the deceptive tactic of making the listener think at the start of the call that it's from one candidate when in fact it's from the other, and of making multiple calls to residences. Sheppard offered no examples of Democrats being accused of those tactics.

A Nov. 1, 2006, NewsBusters post by Sheppard purported to complain about "the media’s double-standard" regarding coverage of John Kerry's remark that those unable to navigate the country's education system "get stuck in Iraq" compared with Trent Lott's 2002 comment that if the country had voted for segregationist Strom Thurmond in 1948, "we wouldn't have had all these problems over all these years." But Sheppard had his own double standard. While he claimed both remarks were "botched jokes," that's not how he depicted them; he called Kerry's comments "insensitive remarks," while Lott is described as making an "innocent comment."
A July 28, 2006, post complained that in a outdoor segment of "Hardball" during which Ann Coulter made an appearance, MSNBC "decided to film the segment with an audience conveniently stocked with Ann Coulter haters," purportedly believing that "the challenger in the left corner, host Chris Matthews, was going to be outmatched by the challenger in the right corner." Sheppard offered no evidence to support his claims, nor for his later claim that the "people standing behind Coulter [were] strategically placed to always be shaking their heads in disgust on virtually every one of her words." Escaping Sheppard's notice, meanwhile, were that during this appearance, Coulter called Al Gore a "total fag" and got her facts wrong on a South Dakota abortion ban.

Attacks

In a Jan. 12 post, Sheppard called Keith Olbermann "a disgrace, and the idea that any major media outlet would give him a daily platform to spew his vitriol from is similarly so." A Jan. 24 post declared Olbermann to be "irrelevant" and a "gross caricature of a newsman," and expressed glee that a Fox News spokesman "deliciously disparaged" CNN's Anderson Cooper as "the Paris Hilton of television news."
Sheppard's Feb. 5 NewsBusters post approvingly linked to a lengthy screed by New York radio host Mark Levin against Olbermann, claiming that "Levin went after Olbermann with guns blazing." We learn who Sheppard was apparently taking his Olbermann-bashing from: Levin called Olbermann "Keith Overbite," "a mental case and a pervert" a "mental patient pervert type," a "jerk," "fruitcake," "nitwit," "moron," "dummy," a "sick bastard," "hung like a thumbtack," he most impotent person in the world, or maybe the biggest pervert in the world," and "a punk, a predator and a pervert. No wonder he loves Bill Clinton."
A Jan. 18 post took Olbermann to task for his criticism of "24" and specifically for the show starting off the latest season by having terrorists level Los Angeles with a nuclear bomb, asserting that Olbermann is suffering from "obvious paranoia" and suggesting that he is "formulating these opinions without all of the pertinent information available." But when Sheppard went on to cite a "conservative writer" who "wonder[ed] how many people in the media understand how possible what was depicted [in Tuesday’s ‘24' episode] is," he left out some pertinent information of his own: the "conservative writer" he was citing was Sheppard himself.
(Indeed, Sheppard spent that post rhapsodizing about the show; four hours later, he criticized Time magazine for raising the question of whether "24" is "a conservative show.")
In a Feb. 22 NewsBusters post, Noel Sheppard declared it "completely disgusting," "disgraceful," "despicabl[e]," "tripe," "nonsense," and "unmitigated audacity" that a GQ article would call for the impeachment of Vice President Dick Cheney. Nowhere did Sheppard address any of the claims the article made in support of its assertion.
A Feb. 18 post by Noel Sheppard called Rep. John Murtha a "despicable caricature of a grossly-corrupt and has-been legislator" and cheered on Brit Hume's similar insult of Murtha. (Ironically, a day earlier, Sheppard was lambasting actor Tim Robbins for hurling "childish epithets" at President Bush.)
In a Jan. 25 post, Sheppard bizarrely suggested that stating certain facts in a CNN report "appeared to be rather anti-Semitic potentially in an attempt to deflect criticism" from former President Jimmy Carter for allegedly "expressing anti-Semitic views" in his controversial book "Palestine Peace Not Apartheid." Sheppard's evidence: the CNN report called Brandeis University, where Carter spoke to defend his book, "historically Jewish," which Sheppard called "not completely accurate" (because "only 50 percent of Brandeis students are Jewish") adding that "some might say" that description of Brandeis is "anti-Semitic." But Brandeis describes itself as "under the sponsorship of the American Jewish community"; further, few would argue that, say, Baylor University is not a "historically Baptist" university because less than half of its student body is currently Baptist.
In a Sept. 27, 2006, post, Sheppard called Bill Clinton "Billary" throughout and called the Clintons "a couple that has done a better job of conning Americans than any other since Bonnie and Clyde."
An Aug. 4, 2006, post played the Godwin's Law card, accusing the media of following "a number of Goebbels' principles" in reporting "highly classified espionage strategies" and "the existence of secret terrorist detention centers."
In a Sept. 30, 2006, post, Sheppard claimed that a dustup between conservative William Kristol and Fox News host Shepard Smith "perfectly demonstrated just how wrong folks like Paul Begala and James Carville are when they suggest that Fox News is just a propaganda arm of the Republican Party." Similarly, an Oct. 2, 2006, post complained that a New York Times "consistently suggested that FNC was a biased, propaganda arm of the Republican Party without recognizing that the overwhelming majority of Americans see the Times as a biased, propaganda arm of the Democrat [sic] Party"; in a Nov. 19, 2006, post, Sheppard called it a "slur" that Dan Rather claimed that Fox News gets talking points from the White House. In fact, there's plenty of evidence to support that claim of Fox News' reliance on Republican talking points.
When MSNBC's Keith Olbermann put on his nightly "Worst Person in the World" list Michael Savage -- who claimed that "the American left" are "the Nazis of our time" and are "cheer[ing] that Jews are dying" -- and Ann Coulter -- who responded to the news that someone mailed an envelope of suspicious powder to the New York Times by saying, "So glad to hear that the New York Times got my letter" -- Sheppard declared in a July 19, 2006, post that "Olbermann chose to virulently attack two of America’s most prominent conservatives in his Worst Person in the World segment: radio host Michael Savage, and author Ann Coulter." Why were Olbermann's remarks a "virulent attack" and Coulter's and Savage's weren't? Sheppard didn't say.

Noel Sheppard despises Al Gore -- so much that he's willing to spread lies about him.
ConWebWatch has previously documented examples of the animus the NewsBusters associate editor has for the former vice president, particularly on the issue of global warming. Sheppard has smeared Gore's film "An Inconvenient Truth" as a "schlockumentary," an "award-winning abomination" and a "farcical political advertisement"; Sheppard has also misled his readers by repeating claims that a British court found the film had errors in it without also noting the court found that many of the film's claims were fully backed up by the weight of science -- specifically that its four main hypotheses were "very well supported by research published in respected, peer-reviewed journals and accords with the latest conclusions of the IPCC [United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change].”
But through all of this, Sheppard has been spreading a claim he has made no effort to back up with real evidence: that Gore has become an environmental activist in order to get rich.
One early appearance of this assertion came in a February 2007 NewsBusters comment thread: "He's a charlatan who doesn't believe in anything but himself and attaining power. And, he's commiting a fraud on the population for his own benefit, not yours, and certainly not mine."
It's a claim Sheppard has made numerous times in various forms over the past year:

"This charade has made Gore a very wealthy man in the last few years -- recent reports claim that he's made upwards of $100 million since the 2000 elections -- and it seems quite unlikely that he’s going to tell all of his adoring fans that he’s been lying all along for his own personal and financial gain." -- June 30, 2007

"This becomes even more absurd when the ringleader and Global Warmingist-in-Chief is identified to have made up to $100 million in the past seven years, and stands to make significantly more if this issue stays in the limelight. Just how much are regular folks who are scraping to make ends meet, save for their kids’ college costs and their own retirement willing to sacrifice so that Al Gore can become a billionaire?" -- July 9, 2007

"NewsBusters readers are aware that one of my contentions concerning global warming alarmism is that those involved are doing it for the money. ... Yet, what it demonstrates is that there's a lot of money in global warming, and all those involved in advancing the hysteria are looking for their payday just like Al Gore. After all, you didn't really think this was about saving the planet, did you?" -- Sept. 25, 2007

"Americans willing to look at the manmade global warming debate with any degree of impartiality and honesty are well aware that those spreading the hysteria have made a lot of money doing so, and stand to gain much more if governments mandate carbon dioxide emissions reductions. In fact, just two months ago, ABC News.com estimated soon-to-be-Nobel Laureate Al Gore's net worth at $100 million, which isn't bad considering that he was supposedly worth about $1 million when he watched George W. Bush get sworn in as president in January 2001. Talk about your get-rich-quick schemes, how'd you like to increase your net worth 10,000 percent in less than seven years?" -- Oct. 3, 2007

"As NewsBusters readers are well aware, we have for months been chronicling Nobel Laureate Al Gore's profit motive concerning the advancement of climate change hysteria." -- Nov. 19, 2007

"As irrefutable evidence mounts that Nobel Laureate Al Gore's climate alarmism is about nothing other than lining his supposedly green pockets with green currency, manmade global warming skeptics around the world wonder when the former vice president's house of cards will collapse." -- Nov. 22, 2007

"How long has NewsBusters been telling you that this whole charade is about Gore getting rich? ...

While Sheppard cites the "irrefutable evidence" he has been "chronicling," his alleged evidence is circumstantial at best, if not outright misleading.
For instance, as support for his claim that Gore is only in it for the money, Sheppard has pointed out that Gore has "made upwards of $100 million since the 2000 elections," variously citing articles by Fast Company and ABCNews.com as evidence. But the Fast Company article (as does the ABC article) tells a different story about where Gore's money came from:

In addition to the steady flow of six-figure speaking gigs, he has become an insider at two of the hottest companies on the planet: at Google (NASDAQ:GOOG), where he signed on as an adviser in 2001, pre-IPO (and received stock options now reportedly worth north of $30 million), and at Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL), where he joined the board in 2003 (and got stock options now valued at about $6 million). He enjoyed a big payday as vice chairman of an investment firm in L.A., and, more recently, started a cable-television company and an asset-management firm, both of which are becoming quiet forces in their fields.

What the article makes clear -- but Sheppard never does -- is that much of this wealth has nothing at all to do with Gore's global warming activism. Not Google, not Apple, not the investment-firm work, not the TV company, which operates the cable channel Current. The asset-management firm, which focuses on "sustainability values," is arguably global warming-related.
Fast Company also makes clear that even Gore's global warming activism was not a money-maker until recently, making it unlikely that he got into it for purposes of creating a cash cow:

His most public effort was dusting off a slide show on global warming he had put together in 1989. It was full of depressing data about melting ice caps and killer hurricanes--not a likely vehicle to spark a resurrection. As recently as May 2004, he took some serious ribbing for presenting a version of it at an event timed to coincide with the goofy global-warming film The Day After Tomorrow. A few months later, when television producer turned environmental activist Laurie David invited her A-list pals to see the slide show, she had a hard time getting them to attend. "People were still mad about the election," she recalls. "And nobody cared about global warming."

So, until a couple years ago, Gore couldn't get arrested talking about global warming, let alone make some coin from it. Talk about an inconvenient truth.

Other alleged evidence is dubious or irrelevant at best. For instance, in claiming that "this whole charade is about Gore getting rich" in a Dec. 9, 2007, post, Sheppard cited an article in Britain's Daily Mail newspaper claiming that a speech Gore gave in Britain was boring and he "was being very precious and demanded his own VIP room before the event." But much of the Daily Mail quoted is anonymously sourced, and the Daily Mail is a right-wing paper -- things that should be taken into consideration, and things Sheppard didn't mention. Further, it proves nothing about Gore's purported avarice.

Sheppard has been called on his lie before -- and given the extremely flimsy "evidence" he has served up this far to support it, as well as his long history of misleading about global warming, this can described as nothing else but a deliberate lie -- by no less than fellow conservative Dennis Miller. As ConWebWatch noted, in an October 2007 appearance on Miller's radio show, Sheppard asserted that Gore "realized, 'I can take this hysteria, turn this into a movie, and make millions of dollars.' And now, $100 million later, he's right." Miller reminded him: "Now, to be fair to him, I do believe that he had cobbled together a little, like, Stone Age equivalent of this slide show, as he called it, before then."

One has to wonder if there isn't a bit of jealousy in Sheppard's attacks on Gore, particularly this one; after all, Gore appears to have been much more successful in his business endeavors than Sheppard, who is listed in his NewsBusters bio as an "economist and business owner" -- which can't be paying all that much if he's having to toil away on a blog.
There's also the double standard factor that Sheppard refuses to acknowledge: if Gore is doing it for the Benjamins, it can also be argued that Sheppard is as well. As a titled editor at NewsBusters, the perch from which he hurls his smears, Sheppard is presumably on the MRC payroll. If Gore's wealth is such an issue, Sheppard should also reveal how much he's getting paid for his mercenary work of peddling falsehoods and distortions.

So, given that Sheppard has pushed this false claim even after Miller caught him doing it, it's time for him to put up or shut up.

If Sheppard is going to continue to make this claim, and it appears that he is, he needs to offer up substantial evidence -- no guilt by association or anonymous smears, please -- or retract it, admit that he's a liar, and apologize to Gore for falsely impugning him.

Jesse "The Body" Ventura, the erstwhile professional wrestler, Navy Seal, motorcycle gang member, and governor of Minnesota, has embarked upon yet another career: investigator of nefarious plots. This month, Ventura launched a show called "Conspiracy Theory" on TruTV which claims to shine light on "the most frightening and mysterious conspiracy allegations of our time." So far Ventura has explored whether 9/11 was an inside job (he doesn't buy the 9/11 Commission's official explanation) [1] and whether the government is testing mind-control weaponry at a secret base in Alaska. (Conclusion: "I learned that radio waves really can get inside your head. They got inside mine.") And in another recent episode, he takes on "the global warming scam."
"Whether global warming is real or not, some people may be using the issue to earn billions of dollars, start a one-world government and control people's lives," warns the teaser on the website for TruTV [2] (formerly known as Court TV). In the show, a voiceover promises that "Jesse Ventura finds the direct link between global warming and a plot to rule the world."

Enter Ventura, who spends much of the 60-minute show skulking around in a black leather jacket, meeting gravelly voiced informants in abandoned warehouses for no apparent reason. "I never thought I'd be investigating global warming. I believe it's real and that saving the planet is good," intones Ventura. "But now I'm on my way to see a guy named Noel Sheppard. He says he has proof that some people are using global warming as an excuse to make money and control the world. That's a conspiracy I want to expose."

Ventura sets up a "clandestine meeting" in a deserted San Francisco courtyard with Sheppard, who is described as an "investigative journalist." This not-exactly-elusive figure—he is a writer for Newsbusters.org—has it on good authority from Russian tabloids [3] that "the earth is now on the brink of entering another Ice Age." He also believes that the occurrence of snowstorms disproves global warming [4]. Ventura learns that climate change may in fact be a vast and elaborate hoax—perpetrated, as he puts it, for "Power. Money. Control."

So Ventura dispatches his team of expert investigators to uncover the truth. These super sleuths fail to locate the thousands of scientists from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change or other preeminent institutions who have spent years studying the phenomenon of planetary warming. Instead, they visit three scientists suggested by Sheppard.

As Democrats and their president-elect -- with invaluable assistance from their media minions -- continue spreading climate hysteria in order to raise taxes and redistribute wealth, a possibly inconvenient truth has just been presented to the international community: "The earth is now on the brink of entering another Ice Age, according to a large and compelling body of evidence from within the field of climate science."

Additionally, the entire bogus manmade global warming theory that climate alarmists and their surrogates have been forcing down the throats of the citizenry "is based on data that is drawn from a ridiculously narrow span of time and it demonstrates a wanton disregard for the ‘big picture’ of long-term climate change."

Such was reported by Russia's Pravda Sunday, and it not only goes quite counter to the junk science being espoused by folks like Nobel Laureate Al Gore and his accomplices James Hansen and Gavin Schmidt, but it has also been regularly proffered by many of the real scientists and climatologists around the world that global warming loving media not only refuse to cite and/or interview, but also disgracefully ridicule as deniers and flat earthers.
According to Pravda, it is Gore, Hansen, Schmidt, and all their sycophant devotees that are the flat earthers who are distracting the world from a much more serious climate threat (emphasis added throughout):

The earth is now on the brink of entering another Ice Age, according to a large and compelling body of evidence from within the field of climate science. Many sources of data which provide our knowledge base of long-term climate change indicate that the warm, twelve thousand year-long Holocene period will rather soon be coming to an end, and then the earth will return to Ice Age conditions for the next 100,000 years.
Ice cores, ocean sediment cores, the geologic record, and studies of ancient plant and animal populations all demonstrate a regular cyclic pattern of Ice Age glacial maximums which each last about 100,000 years, separated by intervening warm interglacials, each lasting about 12,000 years.

Sounds much like what the realist side has been saying for years, doesn't it? But it gets better:

During the 1970s the famous American astronomer Carl Sagan and other scientists began promoting the theory that ‘greenhouse gasses’ such as carbon dioxide, or CO2, produced by human industries could lead to catastrophic global warming. Since the 1970s the theory of ‘anthropogenic global warming’ (AGW) has gradually become accepted as fact by most of the academic establishment, and their acceptance of AGW has inspired a global movement to encourage governments to make pivotal changes to prevent the worsening of AGW.
The central piece of evidence that is cited in support of the AGW theory is the famous ‘hockey stick’ graph which was presented by Al Gore in his 2006 film “An Inconvenient Truth.” The ‘hockey stick’ graph shows an acute upward spike in global temperatures which began during the 1970s and continued through the winter of 2006/07. However, this warming trend was interrupted when the winter of 2007/8 delivered the deepest snow cover to the Northern Hemisphere since 1966 and the coldest temperatures since 2001. It now appears that the current Northern Hemisphere winter of 2008/09 will probably equal or surpass the winter of 2007/08 for both snow depth and cold temperatures.

The main flaw in the AGW theory is that its proponents focus on evidence from only the past one thousand years at most, while ignoring the evidence from the past million years -- evidence which is essential for a true understanding of climatology. The data from paleoclimatology provides us with an alternative and more credible explanation for the recent global temperature spike, based on the natural cycle of Ice Age maximums and interglacials.

Sounds exactly like what the realists claim, and have been claiming, correct? But there's more:

The reason that global CO2 levels rise and fall in response to the global temperature is because cold water is capable of retaining more CO2 than warm water. That is why carbonated beverages loose [sic] their carbonation, or CO2, when stored in a warm environment. We store our carbonated soft drinks, wine, and beer in a cool place to prevent them from loosing their ‘fizz’, which is a feature of their carbonation, or CO2 content. The earth is currently warming as a result of the natural Ice Age cycle, and as the oceans get warmer, they release increasing amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere.
Because the release of CO2 by the warming oceans lags behind the changes in the earth’s temperature, we should expect to see global CO2 levels continue to rise for another eight hundred years after the end of the earth’s current Interglacial warm period. We should already be eight hundred years into the coming Ice Age before global CO2 levels begin to drop in response to the increased chilling of the world’s oceans.
The Vostok ice core data graph reveals that global CO2 levels regularly rose and fell in a direct response to the natural cycle of Ice Age minimums and maximums during the past four hundred and twenty thousand years. Within that natural cycle, about every 110,000 years global temperatures, followed by global CO2 levels, have peaked at approximately the same levels which they are at today.

The conclusion:

The AGW theory is based on data that is drawn from a ridiculously narrow span of time and it demonstrates a wanton disregard for the ‘big picture’ of long-term climate change. The data from paleoclimatology, including ice cores, sea sediments, geology, paleobotany and zoology, indicate that we are on the verge of entering another Ice Age, and the data also shows that severe and lasting climate change can occur within only a few years. While concern over the dubious threat of Anthropogenic Global Warming continues to distract the attention of people throughout the world, the very real threat of the approaching and inevitable Ice Age, which will render large parts of the Northern Hemisphere uninhabitable, is being foolishly ignored.

For what it's worth, Accuweather's Joe Bastardi told Glenn Beck last Tuesday that Russia's Vladimir Putin may have cut supplies of gas from the Ukraine to Europe because he believes the globe is about to go into a cooling phase, and controlling natural gas will give his country a great deal of added power on that continent.

Maybe Putin was aware of this article about to be published by Pravda?

Regardless, it's going to be very interesting to see how much this report gets covered here in America where our media, regardless of how cold it is or how cold it might get, still believe Al Gore.
Stay tuned.

Post facto thought-provoker: the climate alarmists regularly proffer that America and the world, regardless of whether or not AGW theory becomes prophecy, should prepare for that possibility. Not doing so in their view would be foolish.
Well, what if the realists who believe we're entering another serious cooling phase are right? Wouldn't it be foolish for us not to prepare for that outcome?
After all, as most American residences and structures were built during the recent warming phase, they're not prepared for significantly colder temperatures. Neither is our current electricity grid or our supply of natural gas and heating oil.
Also, it is MUCH easier to deal with warmer temperatures than cooler ones. Maybe more important, a lot more people die from the cold than the heat.
As such, using the alarmist argument that it's foolish not to prepare for a possible outcome, and given the greater consequences involved in a global cooling, shouldn't we be allocating more resources and energy to preparing for it?
How might we accomplish this? Well, with the economy in a serious recession, and Congress considering a stimulus package, how about one that offers tax credits to individuals and businesses that upgrade their heating systems, improve insulation, and install double-pane windows?

Such purchases would not only prepare the nation for a possible cooling, but also fuel the economy and create jobs.

While we're at it, as we're going to need more heating oil, maybe we should fast-track the licensing of new refinery construction so that the inventory of such will be on the upswing thereby reducing the likelihood of price spikes from future supply constraints. Such construction would also create jobs.
Of course, if we are going to need more heating oil, we should remove the current impediments to exploration and drilling both offshore and in the nation's oil shale-rich interior.
Without question, if Pravda and the hundreds of climate realists predicting a cooling are right, America needs to prepare for it. Given the current state of our economy, proactive solutions should be looked at as sound investments in our nation's future with the ancillary benefit of much-needed job creation.
Or is this too logical for global warming-obsessed politicians and media?

*Update: NBer robertinseattle accurately pointed out in the comments section that the author of this Pravda piece has some interesting views about 9/11 that would make Rosie O'Donnell proud. In fact, Gregory F. Fegel, although being an American, doesn't care for his homeland much as depicted in his blogs here and here.
How delicious that an America-hating Truther who contributes to Pravda has a firmer grasp of climatology than Nobel Laureate Al Gore, James Hansen, Gavin Schmidt, and most of the folks at the IPCC.
Now THAT'S entertainment!!!

One of Ventura's hard-hitting investigators—June Sarpong, formerly a reporter on a British youth entertainment show—travels by what appears to be a passenger ferry to an undisclosed location to meet Dr. X, a scientist who is "hiding for his life." June frets that someone is following her (presumably someone other than Ventura's camera crew). In order to protect Dr. X from the climate change mafia, he is never named and nor are his credentials revealed. Sitting in deep shadow, he reveals that while he believes the planet is warming, the culprit isn't carbon dioxide. It's the sun. "There's absolutely no question the sun is virtually ignored by the authorities," he says.

"If global warming isn't man-made, why are they telling us it is?" asks June. "Because they're using it as a vehicle for political control," Dr. X replies. "Control every aspect of people's lives, the number of children you can have, the number of people on the planet, where they live, what they can drive. Everything."

Other interviewees include Lord Christopher Monckton [5], perhaps the wackiest and best-known climate skeptic, and Richard Lindzen, an MIT atmospheric physicist and contrarian extraordinaire who claims, falsely, [6] that the global temperature has "stopped increasing." (The show doesn't mention that in the 1990s Lindzen accepted at least $10,000 [7] from fossil-fuel industries to dispute the existence of climate change as an expert witness before Congress and industry-sponsored events.) Ventura's team also solicits the opinion of a "conspiracy expert"— who turns out to be Alex Jones, chief 9/11 conspiracy theorist, radio host, and head of InfoWars.com [8], the web hub for the tinfoil hat club.

The tough questions are reserved for Benjamin Santer, a climate scientist at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Sarpong grills Santer about Monckton's allegations that he "cooked the books" on climate change in United Nations' reports. "Lord Monckton, to my knowledge was not part of the process," Santer points out. "I was." The investigators also grill Amit Chaterjee, CEO of carbon-monitoring software firm Hara. As Sarpong presses him for answers about his relationship with Al Gore (a partner in the venture capital group Kleiner Perkins, which backed Chaterjee's start-up) and the sinister business of carbon reduction, Ventura bursts into the room, demanding answers about Gore's motives. "If this is a war on the environment, there are going to be profiteers," he says.

Ventura ultimately decides that Al Gore is not really "trying to control the world." "I know Al Gore," he says. "I don't think he’s out to do that." Instead, Ventura reveals, "the hunt leads to one man": Sir Maurice Strong, the former executive director of the United Nations Environment Program and, according to Ventura, the "wizard behind the curtain" on climate change. Wait, make that two men: Ventura also sees a culprit in Edmond de Rothschild, the billionaire banker who died earlier this year [9]. These powerful figures are perpetuating a massive lie in order to profit from carbon trading, Ventura and his sources allege.
Ventura's team is never able to actually talk to Strong, despite a few more secret meetings in warehouses and a trip to China, where Strong now lives. However, one of Ventura's investigators reports via webcam that he has concluded that "Strong's a double agent, pretending to be an environmentalist, but really he's been working as an adviser to the Chinese government, and helping them make money off global warming." As with most of the allegations in the show, no evidence is given to support this claim. And it's safe to say that Ventura isn't exactly skeptical when presented with outlandish theories; in the pilot episode he insinuates that the government may have caused Hurricane Katrina and the Indonesian tsunami with a weather-controlling "death ray."

In his final summation, Ventura doesn't actually say whether or not he thinks that climate change is real and caused by mankind. "I'm no scientist. The conspiracy theory here is a scare tactic to control people, make billions, even trillions in profit," he says, stone-faced. "Al Gore, you’ve been a real inspiration. But a lot of other people who preach the global warming gospel aren’t out to save the world. They’re out to run it."
