We have two very eminent authors here with us. Uh we have Jerome Corsi who has published 25 books on economics, history and politics including two number one new york times bestsellers. In 1972 he received his PhD from the Department of Government at Harvardand his current book, the truth about energy, global warming and climate change was just published jerome. If you could come up it would be great. We are also honored to have with us. Climate Depot publisher Mark Murano, the author of the 2021 book, Green fraud why the Green New deal is even worse than you think.

 And the author of the bestselling 2018 book, the politically incorrect guide to climate change. He's also the award winning producer writer and host of climate hustle, a firm released in 2016 in hundreds of U. S. Theaters. His newest book, The Great Reset Global Elites and the Permanent Lockdown was published in august 2022 mark if you could come up please and sit down. Yeah, if you could both take your seats that would be really terrific. Well as an economist, the politics of climate change are fascinating to me because as an economist, I know that many of the solutions just don't add up and for example The idea that we could have all battery powered electric vehicles by 2035 and that auto companies are committing themselves not to produce the internal combustion engine at a time when only 5% of Americans are buying these vehicles is very surprising to me as an economist also the idea that certain vehicles and certain forms of technology are emissions free because they run on batteries when these emissions have to be produced somewhere through electricity. Uh, that's also very surprising right now with the technology available and the technology insight in the future. Uh, these policy objectives just do not add up.

Uh, in addition, we have many, many millions of people who are below the poverty line in Asia, in Africa, in latin America who can only be given the advantages of Western electricity, Western water through uh, conventional fuels. There is no way that solar and wind will be able to lift these individuals up to the standards that we have in the West. And if you've ever lived without running water, if you've ever lived without electricity, uh, you know that the availability of electricity and running water is just central to health, uh, to the safety of your family, uh, to human flourishing to potential development. So unless we move to a situation where we have massive investment in nuclear energy, which is a dense emission free energy, we're not going to be able to accomplish the goals of zero emissions. But proponents of battery electric vehicles and other environmental measures are also against nuclear energy.

So this is not as much an economics question as a political question.And that's why we are so glad to have these two authors with us today. And in addition, they're going to be able to take your questions. So we're gonna open with 10 minutes from each of them discussing their book. Then we're going to have a discussion and we're also going to move to audience questions from those who are watching us online, who are very, very welcome. Well, good morning. My book is is one of the more comprehensive books I've written. It's titled The Truth about energy, global warming and climate change. I put there the truth for very particular reasons. The subtitle is exposing climate lies in the age of disinformation. Now, in the short introduction, I'm just gonna touch on some of the points of the book. Number one, uh I go through the history of how thismovement developed beginning after World War Two. And there were various authors like Harrison Brown, who was very eminent scientists who was writing this fifties about scarcity running out of things. And he was basically concerned. There were too many people, he's one of the first to advocate birth control to reduce people even government imposition of limits and Children. He dramatically wanted to reduce the world's population. And that was followed by people like Paul Ehrlich who wrote the population bomb in 1968, I believe. And it was, again, a best selling book. Too many people were going to run out of the first resources. It was Malthusian. Uh, this idea got co opted when john Holdren, who was Obama's science,are joined with, together with ehrlich and they began moving in a climate direction, holder was a scientist decided, if they could demonize something about the climate, get existential risk, we're all gonna die unless we do this, we're all gonna die. If there's too many people, then the idea was that they could demonize

carbon dioxide and say it's going to cause dramatic changes in the climate. Since hydrocarbon fuels emit carbon dioxide, you get rid of hydrocarbon fuels and that would destroy capitalism. So suddenly the movement became a neo Marxist movement and it still retained the depopulation aspect to it. Now, when you get full range here, and you seegreen new deal has become fully neo Marxist, and the goal to eliminate capitalism and to take on theentire woke agenda has become part of the climate movement.

The second part of my book shows that the science does not support the idea that hydrocarbon fuels are detrimental for a number of reasons hydro uh, the carbon dioxide is a trace molecule0.4% of the atmosphere. Water vapor is about 70% of all greenhouse gas is far more potent than carbon dioxide. We had much more carbon dioxide in the early Earth [HADEAN era?]and it's only now, it's gone from several 1000 parts per million in the atmosphere down to beginning of industrial age, 200 parts per million Today. About 400 parts per million. That's doubling, but it's very minimal.

And the energy coefficient of carbon dioxide is a greenhouse gas and that small proportion are not sufficient to produce. The changes that are being forecast in climate change, movement to destroy us all. There's a couple other really important parts of the book. I'm going to try and just hit highlights. I demonstrate that there is no such thing as fossil fuel, no fossil ever made of fuel, No, no living tissue dies and advances to a higher form of energy that would violate the second law of thermodynamics,we die. We're going to decompose. We get buried because we're gonna smell. They don't line the casket, say this and Matilda is gonna turn into oil. There happens, We deteriorate. What happens is during World War Two, before World War Two, the Germans knew they had a lot of coal. They didn't have oil. They decided for their chemists in the Weimar Republic actually figured out how to synthesize oil. They figured out the equations that make hydrocarbon chains combined. And these equations are operative in the mantle of the earth. The earth exudes hydrocarbon fuels from deep depths. You can see them coming out in the ocean vents at the bottom of the sea where there's no light and the creatures live on the hydrocarbons coming out of the center of the earth.

The last point I want to make is this changes in the earth when they occur are dramatic. So we've had five major extinctions, 80% of Earth's history, 4.6 billion years. There was no life on the surface of the planet at all All in the last 20% of Earth's history. And that time there's been five major extinctions where virtually everything living died. They're all basically cataclysmic events 65 million years ago when the dinosaurs disappeared.The dinosaurs um, had a massive, massive asteroid hit the yucatan fractured. It sent tsunamis all the way up to North Dakota.

There was 1000 years of volcanic activity in India through sulfur oxide in the atmosphere blocked the sun. That was photosynthesis was gone. The dinosaurs ate plants and the earth expanded expanding earth theory,dinosaurs were too big to exist in a more intense gravitational field,more gravity. So the idea that we're going to extinguish ourselves by using hydrocarbon fuels is ridiculous.

The third part of the book deals with the economics. I'm gonna leave that for the discussion because we've already covered that. You cover the economics very well and it will cover, but I agree entirely. Uh, the, these other technologies are not strong enough to make one point if you had a battery, the size of a flashlight battery that could get enough solar energy in it to light up a city, you wouldn't have to have government programs subsidizing it, private industry would produce that immediately. The technology of renewable fuels.Yes, you can put a solar panel in your house and get some electricity. But they are not scalable and they are not sufficiently robust to handle a sizable population. And the climate change, global warming movement knows it because remember as I said in the beginning, it's a depopulation movement as much as anything. Thank you.

you. Uh, thanks for the Heritage Foundation thinking dana for this. Uh, the first book, This is my second book with Green fraud. While the Green New deal was first came out in 2021. And when I started writing this, when the Green New Deal first came on the stage, I was telling everyone, you know, this is going to be the biggest legislative battle in the history of the of America. One of the biggest battle, there will be a huge congressional fights. It's going to be an election issue. And what happened was as I was finishing the book and getting to the end, March 2020 happened. And that literally changed the entire climate debate probably permanently or at least you know, for a decade to come because prior to that there had been indications the debate was moving to what I would call the China-fication of America or the idea of no longer putting this up for a vote because if you go back and I detail in the book Back in 2009 when President Obama had super majorities in the House and Senate, he tried to get a cap and trade bill, passed the climate bill and essentially

failed on the first vote if I'm not mistaken with nancy Pelosi. And then they did a whole bunch of bribes and forced and the twisted people like House Agricultural

Committee chairman Colin Ferguson from Minnesota, forced him, turned him around all the pork, what we would expect the House speaker to do to get people to come in line. It passes the house and that was I think june of 2009, well, a lot of time passes. In 2010 rolls around, harry Reid announces then democrat majority leader that they weren't gonna even put the cap and trade bill to a vote. And that's important to mention because at that point they failed and with their climate agenda in the Obama administration legislatively. So what the Obama administration tried to do, it was a sort of a forerunner of what happened under Covid, they decided to do executive orders.

They decided to bypass democracy. I actually was talking about the china fication, the idea of one party rule, authoritarian rule in china was literally praised by many on the left U. N. Climate uh Christina figures including tom Friedman of the new york times saying that, you know, they could impose what's necessary in a country without the messiness and hassle of democracy. Justin Trudeau actually has said uh that, you know, this is a basic, great admiration for China's basic dictatorship, especially when it comes to things like climate.So Obama moved us in that direction. And of course, trump came and blew up their whole agenda.

But biden came in and the reason biden was able to do this, There was a green new deal was introduced in Congress, never scheduled for a vote, no hearings, no town halls, no constituent meetings, nothing. Why is that? Well, everything changed in the whole climate debate in March 2020 which is where the great reset book comes in. And actually, I have a whole chapter devoted to that in this book, basically foreshadowing this book saying this has changed the whole climate debate. We're no longer dealing with anyone talking about. Uh you know, we have to get this legislation passed and let's get lobbyists on this. And let's get hearings. And we had none of it matters. Here's why in March of 2020 when they did the covid National Emergency Declaration with also the two weeks to flatten the curve. 15 days to slow the spread that changed american politics foreverbecause every governor and mayor became overnight a dictator. They could determine without anyone voting on it without legislators, supervisors, town halls, parliament's globally. They could determine that churches will be closed. Schools will be closed restaurants will be closed. Uh you could have stay at home orders, curfews, weddings, funerals, but a walmart was open and you know, big tech's biggest transfer of wealth from poor middle class to the wealthy.This first of all shocked the climate activists and we had so many people come out, I can't believe they're doing this. Why don't we do this for climate? 

And then the climate activist. And I detail this with in great detail in the great reset and a little bit in green fraud on the Covid aspect. But they started coming out. It was Jamie Margolin Margolis fromteen vogue said if we can shut down the world for a virus we can do the same for climate. John Kerry came out and said the parallels between Covid and climate are screaming at us jane fonda the Green New Deal activists I interviewed here at the capitol for a Green new deal protest actually said Covid is God's gift to the left. And it truly was because this allowed them. They didn't need any more stinking democracy. And that's really people say what is the great reset? Well, it's the world economic forum capitalizing on the crisis of Covid to basically say we don't need democracy anymore, we're gonna follow a chinese rule. So by these emergency declarations they got to achieve everything they wanted with an iron fist now people say oh well you have the court system that coming out and the courts did the C. D. C. Had this actually was with the C. D. C.

But the trump administration had the mask mandate. It took two years for one donald trump appointed federal judge to overturn these mask mandates and that's how long the courts take.And then of course the mask mandates went away because they were unconstitutional. But the C. D. C. Was able to go after render. So what happened here was the climate people got immediately on the and immediately we saw studies first of all to two parts of this linking Covid and climate. So we had the Harvard School of Medicine you had the Journal Nature all saying unchecked climate change is going to lead to too much worse Covid and viruses like it.

So in other words if you didn't support the green new deal or the U. N. Paris agreement you were now a grandma killer because this was going to create all new virulent forms of Covid. And they love that angle. The next thing that happened. And this is infected the International Energy Agency. This is infected british medical journalist has infected new England Journal of Medicine. This has infected the Journal cell which published Anthony Faucithey're all basically saying that we need the response to Covid the same response using uh response to climate using the same template as Covid. And so what they're doing is they're and this is according to the press Washington post from july article, biden is set to declare a national climate emergency. This has groups like the Center for Biological Diversity. Very excited. They're already touting 100 and 30 new wartime presidential powers that biden will have presumably to extend the mayors and governors. We know from the International Energy Agency report of a few months ago that we know the blueprint for what you could call an energy lockdown.

 They're talking about car free cities, odd even days. Gas stations open rotating days. They're talking about more thermostat controls, which we just saw in august in, uh, utility companies doing it under an energy emergency in in colorado for their residents. They're talking about essentially prescribed blackouts. They're talking about under a climate emergencylimiting airline travel. The Washington post just had an article detailing how the there is a new report out there touting a global tax on airlines.The more you fly and it gets pretty heavy. Some flights can be up to almost $200 tax if you've flown enough going after business travels, oddly enough, the same study did not look at banning private jet travel. It was only commercial jet travel. So it's, it's about our freedom of movement they're going after. So, to wrap this all up, everything that has upset anyone I would say. And that's particularly left of center and many liberals and I have a whole chapter devoted to robert f Kennedy Jr, who actually said when I interviewed him at the new york city Climate March, Climate deniers and the ceo of these companies belong in jail at the hague with all the other war criminals. And and in this book I issue a formal forgiveness for robert F Kennedy Jr because of his stance against lockdowns, mask mandates and recognizing the essentially the global plan to take away our freedom. But also there's Naomi Wolf, the former clinton gore adviser, Hollywood, socialist Russell brand is my new hero. If you watch his Youtube channel, it'll blow you away. 

How he's almost pro trump at this point. The way he talks jimmy Dore used to be on young Turks. I detail that. But essentially what's happened in the last 2.5 years is everything that's happened from vax mandates, mask mandates, lockdowns, uh, the restricting of meat, even the even the blackouts and electric car, gas powered car bands has done without a vote of democracy. In other words, everything is just being imposed upon us through corporate government collusion.I'd like to say big tech censorship is government censorship. When you see the biden White House, give a list of names of who they should release. We see this through three of information. Big Tech comes back. Yes, we're working on it. How about this website, we're on it. We're going to take that down. So this kind of corporate, we saw it happen at the freedom convoy in Canada as well. When you had the freedom truckers protesting the vaccine mandates, Justin Trudeau declared them terrorists,essentially domestic terrorists and their bank accounts were cut off, the insurance for their trucks were cut off. The government just declared it. And corporations were more than willing to collude with government on that same thing is happening. Uh, you know, we had the Department of Justice clear the parents who protested at school boards the same concept. So in other words, what they've done in the last couple years without a vote, no one voted for this. Energy. I guess you could say that we voted in ways for politicians who were promising they were never promising to collapse energy. They were promising a green utopia, but they've collapsed our energy, our food supply. They've gone after meat eating.

They're going after high yield agriculture with net zero and make no mistake. The Netherlands is a target for net zero agenda because it's the number one meat exporter in europe. And their stated goal is to go after meat eating, make it a rare and expensive treat. Uh, and this is by the United Nations, by the World Economic forum. And then they've also gone after transportation and classic example as governor, Newsom issues, an executive order, the California Air resources Board follows up with unaccountable Bureaucratic boardwith a timetable to ban the gas powered cars, 17 states, including my home state of Virginia have trigger laws to go along with it.

So they know intuitively that they can't get permits, drilling companies aren't going to get investors. So where are they going to go? They got to go outside the country to get an increase. And he's drained the strategic petroleum reserve to a 40 plus year low, basically to save democrats in the midterm election. I didn't know that was part of a strategic plan to use it for elections, but he is So I'll let jerry.

Well, I mean, first of all, the first recognition is that oil and natural gas are so abundant, I cannot imagine will ever run out. That doesn't mean they're infinite. It means that they're not finite. By the time we will be having a new energy source, just like coal is no longer used the way it was in the 1850s, we have so much coal, we wouldn't know what to do with it. It's an enormous amount of coal all over the world. And we're not using it. The second part is that the politics of this are to negate the economics. In other words, we could have abundant energy and we could be a world leader donald trump proved that it could be cheap and our modern industrial societies run on cheap energy  [COAL?! TAR SANDS? ] populations which have grown to billions they are today, wouldn't be here without cheap energy. Their policies are now create eating food shortages which they will then blame on man made global warming and get therefore push for more of the same policies creating the food shortage. It's a vicious sick cycle. And that's why, you know in the book I argue we we need to stand up against the entire narratives and push back on every single one of these. Whether it's the food destruction, the car destruction, the energy destruction, our free speech destruction, it's all related. The U. N. Announced they own the science. I mean every aspect of this. But if you want to come in on food.

Knows their science is fraudulent.

They know that it's completely distorted. Uh And for instance, the last point I wanna make on this, I agree with Mark, we gotta fight the fundamental premises. I just wrote an article in american thinker on this hurricane that just occurred ian in florida, because again, Michael Mann was out there saying this is climate change, global warming. Well, in fact, even on the Noah website, this is our astronomical, basically measuring all the weather. Meteorologist has a long article probably be taken down after I wrote about it. I made sure to capture it.So I have a proof what he wrote is that there is no proof there is no evidence which would link hurricanes with carbon dioxide, that the argument is just not enough of it and its power is not sufficient. The last point I wanna make is people need to understand that the function of the Earth's weather is to distribute heat. The nature of the earth tilt, the sun hits us at the equator. And so the earth is blessed with this atmosphere in which we can distribute the heat from the equator to the poles and from the lower atmosphere to the upper atmosphere.

That keeps the planet livable because it regulates the heat to the extent that we can and we have ice ages that's still functioning. But the planet can't overcome the amount of cold we're getting at that time. And ice ages tend to occur because of the elliptical orbit of the earth when it's the most elliptical over the most far from the sun at the extreme [once a year?] . That's when we get ice ages and another one will occur. We're right now in an interglacial warming period. We should be thankful we are life prospers in these periods of time. But the point is these changes that occur on earth, including hurricanes, including all the storms. Now, their climate change because they know global warming can't be proved so they want to attribute every storms happen. Every storm is now a result of climate change.The earth needs these dramatic events in order to help regulate the heat.The ocean currents are much more responsible for hurricanes than carbon dioxide is completely a lie....

I just want to add the meteorologist joe Bastardi of the great phrase. It's the weaponization of the weather and this is nothing short of climate ambulance chasingwhere every flood hurricane tornado, drought wildfire is somehow proof of global warming.Michael Mann has actually said, if you want to see how global warming is doing, look outside your kitchen window like they wanted. major climate conferences, such as the upcoming Conferences of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27), are often the subject of right-wing media's ire. During last year's COP26, right-wing media was rife with climate change denial, mockery, and claims that climate action is a ploy to control the citizenry. While we can expect to see these same talking points during COP27 in Egypt from November 6-18, another idea that the right has weaponized and may deploy during the event is the Great Reset conspiracy theory.

Although the concept of a Great Reset has spawned a number of conspiracy theories, the common premise among them all is that a cabal of global elites are conspiring to abolish personal freedoms in order to install a tyrannical, one-world government. According to the Great Reset’s adherents, climate policies (among other issues) are a pretext being used by said global elites to implement this global government.

While conspiracy theories related to the Great Reset as a whole are not new, issues of climate denial associated with the Great Reset have been gaining momentum across right-wing media in recent months, fueled by the global energy crisis and a summer of climate-fueled weather disasters. A key driver of the climate components of the Great Reset conspiracy theory is longtime right-wing media darling and climate denierMarc Morano. Other far-right media personalities including Charlie Kirk, Jack Posobiec, and Peter Swedenhave alluded to or directly referenced the Great Reset conspiracy theory.

At a time when more global dialogue on climate action is crucial in order to avoid the worst effects of climate change, prominent right-wing media figures espousing unhinged Great Reset conspiracies is a worrying prospect.

What is the Great Reset? //agenda 21]

The Great Reset, as envisioned by World Economic Forum founder Klaus Schwab in June 2020, is a plan for what the world should look like after the coronavirus pandemic ends. Schwab stated “the pandemic represents a rare but narrow window of opportunity to reflect, reimagine, and reset our world to create a healthier, more equitable, and more prosperous future.” In essence, the Great Reset asks the question of how to prepare for a more sustainable future, and it promotes more global governmental and corporate cooperation in order to solve the world’s most pressing problems, including poverty, income inequality, and climate change.

A June 2021 BBC deep dive into Great Reset conspiracy theories detailed some of the problems related to the plan. They called it “a vague set of proposals,” before stating that “this lack of clarity, combined with the plan being launched by an influential organisation, provided fertile ground for conspiracy theories to grow.” Among the first and most popular of the Great Reset conspiracy theories dealt with coronavirus. BBC noted, “In this narrative, lockdown restrictions were introduced not to curb the spread of the virus, but to deliberately bring about economic collapse and a socialist world government, albeit run for the benefit of powerful capitalists.”

Indeed, early right-wing criticisms of the Great Reset focused on the idea of a radical transformation of the world economy. In June 2020, Justin Haskins of the libertarian, climate-denying Heartland Institute wrote op-eds insinuating this on both the Fox News and Fox Business websites. Two segments on Fox News’ **The Ingraham Angle** in November 2020 also addressed the idea of an overthrow of the world economy, with host Laura Ingraham stating on November 13, “Well, with the coronavirus, that idea went global. And since last spring, powerful people began to use this pandemic as a way to force radical social and economic change across the continents.”

In his June 2020 Fox Business op-ed, Haskins also pushed the idea that climate policies would be used as a pretext to advance the Great Reset agenda. This idea was also mirrored by former Breitbart writer James Delingpole, who wrote in November 2020 that climate change is “really just a pretext for the kind of globalist takeover now being conducted by our governments.” Fast forward to 2022, and this is one of the main tenets of the Great Reset conspiracy theory.

Key climate denial talking points within the Great Reset conspiracy theory

There are several themes related to climate change within the Great Reset conspiracy theory that have been pushed by right-wing media figures.

“Climate lockdowns are coming”

As the aforementioned BBC deep dive piece noted, adherents to the Great Reset conspiracy theory believe that there are more sinister motives to coronavirus lockdowns than just protecting public health. Now, the theory’s adherents believe the same about climate action. Adherents push the idea that “climate lockdowns” are being planned by world governments in order to set off recessions and rapidly restrict economic growth.

Notorious climate denier Marc Morano was pushing this idea as early as 2020, when he stated on the December 21 edition of Fox News’ Tucker Carlson Tonight that the Biden administration will “go from COVID lockdowns to climate lockdowns.” Morano returned to it on the June 19, 2022, edition of Newsmax’s Gorka Reality Check, where he railed against Green New Deal policies and stated that Bill Gates and George Soros “love this idea of lockdowns. …That is their path to the Great Reset, emergency declaration gives them more power.”

Popular alt-right commentator and Pizzagate conspiracy theorist Jack Posobiec also echoed this line of thinking, tweeting to his more than 1 million followers on September 20 that “Davos launching new push for permanent ‘climate change’ lockdowns: ’The lockdowns aren't for them, the lockdowns are for YOU.’" On the September 21 edition of Newsmax’s Eric Bolling The Balance, host Eric Bolling stated, “The same reasons given for the COVID lockdowns will be the same reasons for creating climate change lockdowns.” He led with this by showing pictures of internment camps, insinuating to his viewers that this is the end goal that climate action will lead to.

“Climate change is about control”

This claim is based on the lie that climate change is a manufactured crisis which wealthy individuals and powerful governments are using to implement policies that police peoples’ movement and ultimately end basic freedoms.

On the July 15 and 16 editions of Fox & Friends, co-host Will Cain made this claim, stating that there’s “protests against the Great Reset” all around the world, and claimed, “All of this goes back to a global plan to attempt to control the climate no matter the cost.”

Bolling also pushed this idea, telling his audience on the September 12 edition of Eric Bolling The Balance that climate change is a hoax being used “in order to make people fear the end of the world and convince us to change everything. They want to control us forever and ever.” (In fact, the entire 16 minutes of his monologue was focused on climate denial.) Speaking about the Great Reset on the September 20 edition of OAN News, climate denier guest Bonner Cohen insinuated that the “environmental movement” recognized that “scaring people to death about ‘climate change’” is a way to control them. He then continued:

Once you control energy, you also control the people who use and need energy. This is a way of forcing them to do exactly what you want to do, and will enable unelected and unaccountable bureaucrats in Washington, D.C., and for that matter, around the world to determine how you spend your life, how you spend your money, how you use your energy to the benefit of a tiny percentage of the population.

Controlling agriculture and meat

Another climate-related tenet of the Great Reset conspiracy theory is the idea that those in power want to control food production and police what people eat.

In reference to the Dutch farmers' protests, The Post Millennial tweeted out a quote from Posobiec on July 7, which said, “The government of the Netherlands perhaps should be listening to their farmers ... instead of listening to the WEF and pushing the Great Reset green agenda upon them.”

In a discussion on general problems facing the U.S. on the September 3 edition of Newsmax’s Wendy Bell Common Sense, right-wing radio host Jeff Kuhner stated, “It's the Great Reset. … Many of these left wing global – they want food shortages. They want energy rationing. They want to break the back of the middle and working class of this country.”

Great Reset conspiracy theorists also imply that people will be forced to eat insects. In July, pseudo-journalist and Holocaust denier Peter Sweden got over 12,000 likes on a tweet saying, “In Belgium there are now talks about an ‘environment tax’ on meat. They want you to eat bugs and be happy. Are you enjoying The Great Reset?”

Dog whistling about the Great Reset

Oftentimes, the term Great Reset won’t be directly referenced, but certain keywords and allusions are used as dog whistles. In September, Peter Sweden and Morano baselessly claimed people will be forced to eat bugs.

Another example comes from right-wing writer Joel Kotkin in Newsweek, who, on September 19, suggested that coronavirus lockdowns are a test run for coming climate lockdowns, and both are “top-down edicts over how people live.”

Fox News star Tucker Carlson also alluded to the Great Reset conspiracy theory on the September 9 edition of Fox News’ The Ingraham Angle. Discussing the energy crisis, Carlson suggested that transitioning away from fossil fuels is about control. He claimed, “Energy is civilization. … People don’t understand how threatening this is and how close we are to being under the complete and total control of people who wish us ill.”

Additionally, if a speaker references “globalists,” Klaus Schwab, Davos, or the World Economic Forum within a climate denial context, that’s generally a sign they are referring to the Great Reset. For example, on the September 9 edition of Newsmax’s Real America, Rep. Marjorie Taylor-Greene (R-GA) suggested that global elites are pushing climate policies to make money at the expense of the poor. She said, “They want the climate crisis to continue because they make money off of it. … They're so disconnected. And they truly are globalists and they're more interested in the World Economic Forum and what Klaus Schwab has to offer.”

Key drivers of the Great Reset conspiracy theory are popular figures within the right-wing media ecosystem

One such narrative-shaper is Morano, a longtime climate denier and frequent Fox News guest who recently wrote a book titled “The Great Reset: Global Elites and the Permanent Lockdown.” In addition to various Newsmax appearances, Morano appeared on two separate OAN shows on September 16 to discuss the Great Reset. In July, his book was promoted on Tucker Carlson Tonight. On October 8, he appeared on Fox News’ Unfiltered with Dan Bongino and said the Great Reset is about “collapsing our energy, food, transportation, and our free speech rights.” He’s also been doing right-wing radio interviews promoting his Great Reset conspiracy theory book.

Hosts on Newsmax are also promoting the Great Reset conspiracy theory.Bolling has devoted several segments to climate denial and the Great Reset in recent months. On the October 13 edition of his program, Bolling lied about President “Joebama” waging a “war on our own oil independence,” and that he is making people “suffer for the Great Reset. Control us for the Great Reset.” He said this all alongside a chyron that stated, “You shall eat no meat.”

Newsmax anchor Rob Schmitt also pushed this idea on the September 29 edition of his show Rob Schmitt Tonight, stating, “In 50 years we will still be burning fossil fuels on this planet. … No person is actually going to gut their quality of life to help John Kerry implement a Great Reset that will do nothing to save the climate and insidious plan that really just rapidly socializes our country and the world, which is what they really want.” Newsmax anchor Chris Salcedo also mentioned the Great Reset on his show on September 15.

Popular alt-right media personalities are also driving much of the Great Reset chatter. One example is Peter Sweden, whose regular tweets about climate denial and the Great Reset receive significant engagement. One tweet, which racked up tens of thousands of likes, stated, “The Great Reset is another word for Global Communism.” Two other tweets with significant engagement also exhibit climate denial and link the Great Reset to “global communism.”

Jack Posobiec is another right-wing figure pushing Great Reset talking points. In September, Turning Point USA (TPUSA) hosted an event in Phoenix called “Defeating the Great Reset.” Notable speakers included Posobiec, Charlie Kirk, and Steve Bannon. The description of the event lied about the WEF’s plan, saying they want people to “own nothing and be happy” (a Reuters fact check from early 2021 disputed this claim). Conference speaker James Lindsey invoked this phrase and insinuated that powerful elites will come after our modes of transportation. Additionally, Charlie Kirk interviewed guest attendee Alex Jones about banning meat, with Jones saying that meat is a “symbol of freedom” and that “globalists” want to ban it.

What’s worse, the September 22 of Kirk’s podcast was entirely devoted to climate denial, using the title “Exposing the Great Climate Change Hoax.” The Great Reset was mentioned multiple times in this episode. He also alluded to climate lockdowns, stating, “How do you stop a virus? You lock down everything. How do you stop climate change? You lock down everything.” He also claimed that dictators use crises “to get their tyranny, their power, their control implemented.” He then called climate change “the next crisis and the perfect one.” He also suggested that the transition to clean energy is all about a transition to more global government and less freedom. Finally, Kirk used violent rhetoric to describe climate activists, noting that the “​​enviro-fascist movement” is “the greatest threat to civilization.”

Tenets of the Great Reset conspiracy theory have also popped up on Fox News, which is the most-watched cable news network in the United States. In addition to the examples above, the September 7 edition of Tucker Carlson Tonight featured a segment on the growing threat of climate lockdowns. Ingraham also mentioned lockdowns on the October 30 edition of The Ingraham Angle, where she insinuated that the climate crisis, much like the pandemic, is made up, and that it will be an excuse for elites to “extend emergency powers” over the population.

This conspiracy theory will only get worse from here – news outlets should pay attention 

Given the growing proliferation of the Great Reset conspiracy theory in right-wing media, it’s worth noting that there are legitimate critiques of the WEF’s vague proposal outside of unhinged conspiracy theories. The BBC deep dive referenced earlier found that the lack of clarity around Schwab’s screed provided fertile breeding ground for conspiracy theories to grow. Writing in The Intercept in late 2020, climate writer Naomi Klein argued that people have a right to be skeptical of wealthy and powerful figures introducing bold new ideas, stating that the Great Reset “is an attempt to create a plausible impression that the huge winners in this system are on the verge of voluntarily setting greed aside to get serious about solving the raging crises that are radically destabilizing our world.” Finally, writer Ivan Wecke argues the real issue with the Great Reset idea is that it gives corporations, and not democratic institutions, more control over our lives.

The lack of clarity around the original Great Reset idea and the real problems associated with it make the right-wing conspiracy theories related to it all the more worrying. Given the threats posed by climate change, we do need to envision a way to create a more sustainable future. Global dialogue on climate action is necessary to do this, and it’s why conferences like the upcoming COP27 are crucial: We need forums to discuss ways to phase out our deadly addiction to fossil fuels and introduce cleaner sources of energy that will allow those at the bottom to live more just and equitable lives.

The right’s Great Reset conspiracy theory flips all of this on its head: By calling climate change a hoax to advance a tyrannical agenda, Great Reset conspiracy adherents are advocating for a future with more fossil fuels which will lead to more devastating climate impacts that will disproportionately affect those at the bottom.

The Cambridge Extinction Rebellion Twitter account did an excellent job of explaining why this conspiracy theory should be taken seriously, noting that adherents “will frame fossil fuels around notions of freedom, claiming pro climate and anti fossil fuel policies harm freedom. They will heavily capitalize on the energy crisis this winter to advance this narrative. It is likely to be persuasive to many.” Given the rapid spread of conspiracy theories like QAnon and the belief that the 2020 presidential election was stolen from Trump, people need to understand the danger behind climate denial and the right-wing Great Reset conspiracy theory. They can start by keeping an eye on it around COP27 discussions.

Right-wing media figures are fueling outrage against ESG, an acronym for corporate standards and practices related to environment, social, and governance issues that Republican lawmakers and the fossil fuel industry are seeking to turn into a new bogeyman. Conveniently vague,ESG is being misleadingly cast as a tool for “elites” to force a tyrannical agenda on unsuspecting Americans, specifically investors, as part of the far-right “Great Reset” conspiracy theory.

The anti-ESG movement is gaining momentum fast. In May, former Vice President Mike Pence, seemingly gearing up for a potential 2024 presidential run, attacked ESG in a speech in Houston and in aWall Street Journal op-ed.Biotech founder and conservative influencer Vivek Ramaswamy launched an explicitly anti-ESG asset management firm called Strive that same month. More recently, right-wing media spearheaded an effort to blame upheaval in the Netherlands, Sri Lanka, and other countries on green policies supposedly forced into place because of ESG compliance, warning that if the “global elites” had their way, the United States would be next. 

This right-wing campaign is now targeting corporations which are implementing ESG practices and the financial institutions which are encouraging them through investment. According to Reuters, 17 conservative-led states have pushed at least 44 bills or new laws punishing companies for taking a stance on ESG issues in 2022, compared to about a dozen of these types of actions in 2021. Notably, an August 5 New York Times investigation revealed that a dark money group with deep ties to the fossil fuel industry is working with state treasurers across the country to hinder climate action in the form of anti-ESG legislation, among other tactics.

ESG is attracting more and more attention from right-wing media influencers like Elon Musk, Glenn Beck, and James Lindsay. They are part of a growing number of conservative media figures seizing the opportunity to turn ESG into the next battleground in the culture wars, in part by fitting it into the broader “Great Reset” conspiracy theory on social media. As it relates to climate change denial, the Great Reset posits that global elites are using the climate crisis as a pretext to impose economic control on the masses.

What is ESG?

On May 18, Musk took to Twitter, writing, “ESG is a scam. It has been weaponized by phony social justice warriors.” Tesla had just been kicked off of the S&P 500’s ESG index, potentially spelling trouble for the company’s stock value, and Musk was mad. It wasn’t the first time he had touched on the topic, but the media frenzy that followed had everyone asking one question: What is ESG?

From May 17-19, Google search interest in “ESG” skyrocketed by 233%, reaching peak popularity for a relatively esoteric acronym.

ESG stands for “environmental, social, and governance” criteria that companies can meet by developing initiatives and disclosures to appear responsive to environmental concerns, workers' rights, and other pressing social issues. Independent rating agencies evaluate how well they are managing risks and growth opportunities in these different areas and how that could have material impacts on their performance. For example, a company that provides detailed reporting on its greenhouse gas emissions from direct operations and across its supply chain and has a robust plan to achieve net-zero emissions may be more likely to receive a high ‘E’ score.

Investors who want to prioritize financial returns but are seeking some level of corporate accountability are increasingly relying on ESG scores to make decisions. ESG investments are on track to exceed $50 trillion by 2025. The big three asset management firms – BlackRock, Vanguard, and State Street, which have sometimes used their shareholder power to support ESG resolutions – are the main villains in the right’s anti-ESG narrative. For example, at Exxon’s annual meeting in 2021, the three firms used their voting power to help activist investors install three directors on the company's board, with the goal of building out a more aggressive strategy to transition away from fossil fuels.

But that doesn’t mean corporate ESG will save the planet. To the contrary, climate advocates have called ESG a greenwashing scam. Despite being in the S&P 500’s ESG Index, Exxon has increased its investment in oil and gas drilling and does not have a climate planthat meets the goals of the Paris agreement. But the fossil fuel industry and the lawmakers who receive lavish contributions from it aren’t concerned with legitimate criticisms of ESG.

Why ESG matters to fossil fuel proponents

It is clear that despite short-term demand rising, fossil fuels are not viable long-term investments. However, fossil fuel industry allies are clawing to keep their power and profits, discouraging any corporate commitment to climate by vilifying and even prohibiting adherence to ESG standards while advancing pro-oil and gas legislation at the state and federal levels that prohibits investment and business decisions from considering the economic and environmental consequences of fossil fuels. What’s more, Republican legislators are vowing to continue this trend if they take control of the House in the November midterm election.

In the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s decision to hamstring the authority of the Environmental Protection Agency in June, ESG opponents are now calling for the court to place similar limits on the Securities and Exchange Commission and its ability to ask public companies for disclosures about their climate impacts.

Right-wing culture warriors, conspiracy theorists, and Fox News hosts are attacking ESG

The burgeoning conservative campaign against ESG isn’t just playing out in state legislatures or financial institutions. ESG panic may be approaching critical mass, with high-profile climate skeptics like Tucker Carlson, Marc Morano, Alex Epstein, and Michael Shellenberger realizing that the acronym is ripe for manipulation and fearmongering.[vid]

Some key media figures in the right-wing campaign against ESG, such as radio host andconspiracy theorist Glenn Beck and anti-critical theory activist James Lindsay,jumped at the chance to amplify several attacks from Musk in an effort to move ESG into the mainstream discourse.

These anti-ESG evangelists aren’t just concerned with protecting oil and gas interests. Their grievances are often focused on the social and governance aspects as well, applying the same flawed arguments to specific examples to deride and toxify ESG as a whole.

Musk: “ESG is the devil incarnate”

Musk’s vendetta against ESG is personal, and it has been building at the same time his faltering deal to buy Twitter with the goal of stopping the “woke mind virus” has transformed him into a reactionary martyr.

Musk first took to Twitter with his ESG grievances on March 8, claiming, “ESG rules have been twisted to insanity,” replying to a tweet from venture capitalist and Facebook board member Marc Andreessen.

• The Daily Wire’s coverage of the comment has garnered more Facebook interactions than any other U.S.-based right-wing article mentioning “ESG” since 2020. It was also shared by Daily Wire influencers Matt Walsh and Michael Knowles.

• Dark money-funded PragerU, which has denied the established science of climate change in its videos, edited the thumbnail of an older anti-ESG video to feature Musk and his tweet.

On April 3, Musk tweeted, “I am increasingly convinced that corporate ESG is the Devil Incarnate,” cueing up another right-wing media pile-on.

• Several conspiracy theorists and far-right characters chimed in, with some invoking the “Great Reset” conspiracy theory. Right-wing news coverage did the same.

• Rep. Dan Crenshaw (R-TX), who has received well over half a million dollars from the fossil fuel industry and has a large social media following, used Musk’s statements to blame high gas prices on ESG instead of price gouging and dedicated an entire episode of his podcast, Hold These Truths, to the supposed evils of ESG.

On May 18, Musk wrote his infamous “social justice warriors” tweet, which has over 360,000 interactions.

• Fox News and Fox Business both ran a variety of segments on Musk’s tweet, calling ESG a scam, defending Musk as a victim of censorship, and interviewing lawmakers pushing anti-ESG legislation.

On May 26, Fox host Laura Ingraham dedicated an entire segment of The Ingraham Angle to fearmongering about ESG, citing Musk at the outset.

• On Twitter, industry shills, dedicated climate change deniers, and other conservative media personalities jumped to back Musk’s statement, sometimes promoting their own content on the topic for engagement.

Glenn Beck: “Elon Musk Joins Glenn in Anti-ESG Crusade”

Beck is not new to ESG. The right-wing TV and radio host was an early adopter of the “Great Reset” conspiracy theory in 2020 following the World Economic Forum’s annual Davos summit, along with Steve Bannon, Alex Jones, and a slew of other conservative influencers. He has also been weaving ESG into this theory, which has been aptly described as a “hodgepodge of one-world-government fears.”

• In December 2021, Beck insisted that Citigroup’s implementation of ESG scores for its clients was part of “the Davos plan” to prevent individuals from getting loans.

• In January, Beck claimed that the Davos elites are “designing everything – everything – in your life,” including the climate crisis, for the purpose of implementing the Great Reset, in part through ESG.

Beck worked with the fossil fuel-funded Heartland Institute, to help spread his message. Heartland has been testifying before lawmakers in several states to back anti-ESG legislation, providing them with misleading information about how financial institutions are implementing ESG strategies. Beck even wrote a book with Heartland Editorial Director Justin Haskins. In one Beck claimed that “there are now 20 states that are starting to put anti-ESG legislation in because of his book.”

• In February, Beck did indeed talk to at least one state legislature in Idaho, calling ESG “CRT on steroids.” (In March, the Idaho legislature passed a bill aimed at discouraging state investment boards from making ESG considerations.)

• In an April 4 video titled “Elon Musk Joins Glenn in Anti-ESG Crusade,” Beck praised Tesla as a company and noted that Musk’s provocative tweets have sparked more conversations around ESG and lent credibility to criticism, especially given his perceived commitment to addressing the climate crisis.

A true Musk fanboy, Beck has gone so far as to blame ESG and the Great Reset for roadblocks to his deal to buy Twitter.

James Lindsay: “We’re going to do to ESG what we did to CRT”

Lindsay, a critical theory opponent, has emerged as a loud ESG critic, particularly on Twitter. Lindsay is an influential figure in the “critical race theory” panic. He was also instrumental in popularizing the baseless “groomer” slur which has been used to target LGBTQ people and falsely suggest they are child predators. (Lindsay was recently permanently suspended from Twitter, where he had over 300,000 followers, for calling a trans Harvard instructor a “child sexualization specialist.”)

Now, similarly to Beck, Lindsay is using his influence to spotlight ESG as a key feature of the Great Reset conspiracy theory, becoming increasingly obsessed with the topic and anyone who he feels could give it momentum – especially Musk. More broadly, Lindsay is focused on gathering a smorgasbord of right-wing grievances under the umbrella of ESG, with the intent of building a nearly all-encompassing cause for conservative activists to rally behind. Unlike some of the lawmakers who are primarily targeting climate-conscious businesses, Lindsay’s interest is more aligned with attacking the “social” aspect of ESG, which includes Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion efforts (DEI).

• He has taken aim at any efforts to combat discrimination at companies such as Starbucks, falsely labeling DEI initiatives as critical race theory or “Woke Marxism,” and writing, “DEI won’t go away until after ESG is defeated. It’s a slightly separate fight, but it doesn’t even start until ESG is in ashes.”

• He has also targeted Disney and linked it to ESG in order to feed into the homophobic and transphobic right-wing false accusation that LGBTQ people are predators.

• He first started writing about ESG in March 2021 on Twitter, around the same time that Beck started posting about the topic. Lately, though, he’s been writing extreme statements about ESG almost every day across social media. Many of these appeared in his tweets, which had thousands of likes and retweets, but are no longer available due to his suspension.

In May, Lindsay wrote that “we’re going to do to ESG what we did to CRT,” in response to an article from The New Republic examining ESG’s role in the broader culture wars. The article highlighted Musk’s tweets and noted that anti-critical race theory and anti-ESG groups have common funders.

Lindsay repeatedly attempted to engage with Musk about ESG on Twitter, encouraging and agreeing with his objections to ESG and praising Tesla and SpaceX. On Facebook, he invoked Musk when posting about the issue, and generally jumped to his defense in the face of any criticism

• In May, he addressed the “ESG Cartel” in a short of his New Discourses podcast and appeared on I’m Right with Jesse Kelly, where he talked about having conversations with lawmakers in “maybe a dozen states” regarding ESG and DEI and linked it to the influence of the World Economic Forum.

In June, he was a guest on The Charlie Kirk Show, to discuss how ESG is part of a “Marxist theology.”

ESG is seemingly poised to continue gaining traction

If we learned anything from the rise of critical race theory to a national issue and right-wing media obsession, it’s that underestimating the right-wing media’s ability to create a moral panic out of opaque terminology has serious consequences. Musk’s tweets were all that right-wing media figures and conspiracy theorists needed to expand attacks on ESG. Now, conservative TV news outlets have picked up on the narrative. With midterms approaching, so is the opportunity to mobilize voters and shareholders against this new iteration of ever-evolving “woke” ideology.

There are legitimate concerns about ESG. But even if it isn't an effective path toward decarbonization, permitting a maliciously misleading interpretation conceived by the fossil fuel industry and its allies to dominate the media cycle certainly won’t get us there, and may even further demonize various types of climate action.

Breitbart News was once described as a “platform for the alt-right” by its former chairman, the ex-Trump adviser

Steve Bannon.”15

Launched in 2007, the site has long published false and misleading claims about women and minority groups as

well as conspiracy theories about Barack Obama’s status as a US citizen. Breitbart’s writers are, according to NBC:

“nationalistic, often linking immigrants and refugees with violence and the degradation of Western values.”16

The site regularly publishes climate change denial, with US contributor John Nolte and Breitbart London’s executive

editor James Delingpole both having repeatedly referred to climate change as a “hoax” pushed by so-called “climate

alarmists”.17

In 2011, the family of hedge fund billionaire and Republican donor Robert Mercer purchased nearly half of Breitbart

for $10 million.18 Mercer has a record of funding groups that challenge the scientific consensus on climate change,

such as the Heartland Institute, the Heritage Foundation and the Media Research Center, a member of the Toxic Ten.

In 2016 alone, Mercer is reported to have given nearly $4 million to such groups.19 He also co-founded and invested

in Cambridge Analytica, which came under fire for collecting the data of up to 87 million Facebook users.20

This Breitbart article in our sample stokes fears of pro-climate policies.

It promotes a conspiracy theory about “the leftist connections between

ostensibly public-health-related lockdown decrees, the Great Reset,

and ‘climate change’ advocacy”.21 Google ads for a conference on

It’s a corporate takeover of global governance that affects our food, our data and our vaccines

‘The Great Reset’ conspiracy theories don’t seem to want to die. The theories were triggered by the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) summit last year, which had the theme ‘The Great Reset’ and argued that the COVID crisis was an opportunity to address the burning issues facing the world.According to the BBC, the term ‘Great Reset’ has received more than eight million interactions on Facebook and has been shared almost two million times on Twitter since the WEF initiative was launched.

The set of conspiracy theories around the Great Reset are nebulous and hard to pin down, but piecing them together gives us something like this: the Great Reset is the global elite’s plan to instate a communist world order by abolishing private property while using COVID-19 to solve overpopulation and enslaving what remains of humanity with vaccines.

Intrigued by the palaver around last year’s summit, I decided to find out what the WEF’s Great Reset plan was really about. At the heart of conspiracy theories are supposed secret agendas and malicious intent. While these may be absent from the WEF's Great Reset initiative, what I found was something almost as sinister hiding in plain sight. In fact, m ore sinister because it’s real and it’s happening now. And it involves things as fundamental as our food, our data and our vaccines.

The real Great Reset

The magic words are‘stakeholder capitalism’, a concept that WEF chairman Klaus Schwab has been hammering for decades and which occupies pride of place in the WEF’s Great Reset plan from June 2020. The idea is that global capitalism should be transformed so that corporations no longer focus solely on serving shareholders but become custodians of society by creating value for customers, suppliers, employees, communities and other ‘stakeholders’. The way the WEF sees stakeholder capitalism being carried out is through a range of ‘multi-stakeholder partnerships’ bringing together the private sector, governments and civil society across all areas of global governance.

The idea of stakeholder capitalism and multi-stakeholder partnerships might sound warm and fuzzy, until we dig deeper and realise that this actually means giving corporations more power over society, and democratic institutions less.

The plan from which the Great Reset originated was called the Global Redesign Initiative. Drafted by the WEF after the 2008 economic crisis, the initiative contains a 600-page report on transforming global governance. In the WEF’s vision, “the government voice would be one among many, without always being the final arbiter.” Governments would be just one stakeholder in a multi-stakeholder model of global governance. Harris Gleckman, senior fellow at the University of Massachusetts, describes the report as “the most comprehensive proposal for re-designing global governance since the formulation of the United Nations during World War II.”

Multi-stakeholder partnerships are public-private partnerships on the global stage

Who are these other, non-governmental stakeholders? The WEF, best known for its annual meeting of high-net-worth individuals in Davos, Switzerland, describes itself as an international organization for public-private cooperation. WEF partners include some of the biggest companies in oil (Saudi Aramco, Shell, Chevron, BP), food (Unilever, The Coca-Cola Company, Nestlé), technology (Facebook, Google, Amazon, Microsoft, Apple) and pharmaceuticals (AstraZeneca, Pfizer, Moderna).

Instead of corporations serving many stakeholders, in the multi-stakeholder model of global governance, corporations are promoted to being official stakeholders in global decision-making, while governments are relegated to being one of many stakeholders. In practice, corporations become the main stakeholders, while governments take a backseat role, and civil society is mainly window dressing.

The multi-stakeholder ecosystem

Perhaps the most symbolic example of this shift is the controversial strategic partnership agreement the United Nations (UN) signed with the WEF in 2019. Harris Gleckman describes this as a move to turn the UN into a public-private partnership, creating a special place for corporations inside the UN.

The multi-stakeholder model is already being built. In recent years, an ever-expanding ecosystem of multi-stakeholder groups has spread across all sectors of the global governance system. There are now more than 45 global multi-stakeholder groups that set standards and establish guidelines and rules in a range of areas. According to Gleckman, these groups, which lack any democratic accountability, consist of private stakeholders (big corporations) who “recruit their friends in government, civil society and universities to join them in solving public problems”.

Multi-stakeholderism is the WEF’s update of multilateralism, which is the current system through which countries work together to achieve common goals. The multilateral system’s core institution is the UN. The multilateral system is often rightly accused of being ineffective, too bureaucratic and skewed towards the most powerful nations. But it is at least theoretically democratic because it brings together democratically elected leaders of countries to make decisions in the global arena. Instead of reforming the multilateral system to deepen democracy, the WEF’s vision of multi-stakeholder governance entails further removing democracy by sidelining governments and putting unelected ‘stakeholders’ – mainly corporations – in their place when it comes to global decision-making.

Put bluntly, multi-stakeholder partnerships are public-private partnerships on the global stage. And they have real-world implications for the way our food systems are organized, how big tech is governed and how our vaccines and medicines are distributed.

The future of food

In autumn 2021, the UN is set to host the World Summit on Food Systems (FSS) in Rome. This is necessary, given that 3.9 billion people – more than half of the world's population – are currently battling hunger and malnutrition, even though there is enough food to feed the world. But this year’s summit differs significantly from past UN food summits, embracing ‘multi-stakeholder inclusivity’, in which the private sector has ‘an important role’. A concept note from 2019 showed that the WEF was set to be involved in organising the summit, though it is not now clear what the role of the WEF will be.

“Abandoning pesticides is not on the table. How come?” asks Sofia Monsalve of FIAN International, a human rights organisation focused on food and nutrition.“There is no discussion on land concentration or holding companies accountable for their environmental and labour abuses.” This fits into a bigger picture Monsalve sees of large corporations, which dominate the food sector, being reluctant to fix the production system. “They just want to come up with new investment opportunities.”

FIAN International together with 300 other organizations have expressed their concerns about the multi-stakeholder setup in an open letter to the secretary general of the UN, António Guterres. In a meeting with civil society groups who signed the letter, Amina Mohammed, the UN deputy secretary general, assured them that strong safeguards would prevent a corporate capture of the event, “by allowing only platforms or networks and no single corporation to the summit.”

But for Monsalve, “this only makes it worse. Now corporations can protect their interests and hide behind these platforms because it's unclear who is in there.” Indeed, a corporate partner list is nowhere to be found on the official website. The FSS organisers were contacted for comment but had not responded by the time of publication.

The signatories to the letter fear that, with corporate involvement in the summit, food will continue to be treated “as a commodity and not as a human right”. If unchanged, industrial food systems will continue to have irreversible impacts on our health and the health of our planet.

Big tech governing big tech

Another landmark in the development of stakeholder capitalism can be found in the Big Tech sector. As a part of his 2020 Roadmap for Digital Cooperation the UN Secretary-General called for the formation of a new ‘strategic and empowered multi-stakeholder high-level body’. Again it's not easy to find a list of stakeholders but after some digging a long list of ‘roundtable participants’ for the roadmap includes Facebook, Google, Microsoft and the WEF.

Although the functions laid out for this new body are quite vague, civil society organizations fear it will come down to Big Tech creating a global body to govern itself. This risks institutionalising these companies' resistance against effective regulation both globally and nationally and increasing their power over governments and multilateral organizations. If the body comes to fruition, it could be a decisive victory in the ongoing war GAFAM (Google, Apple, Facebook, Amazon and Microsoft) is waging with governments over tax evasion, antitrust rules, and their ever-expanding power over society.

More than 170 civil society groups worldwide have signed another open letter to the secretary general of the UN – this time to prevent the digital governance body from forming. The secretary general was approached for comment but had not replied at the time of publication.

COVAX

Then there’s COVAX. The COVAX initiative aims to “accelerate the development and manufacture of COVID-19 vaccines, and to guarantee fair and equitable access for every country in the world”. That, again, sounds wonderful, especially given the staggering inequalities in vaccination levels between rich and developing countries.

But why is the World Health Organization (WHO), which is part of the UN, not calling the shots? “Countries together, through multilateral agencies like the WHO, were supposed to take decisions about global health issues, with maybe some technical support by others,” says Sulakshana Nandi from NGO People's Health Movement, which has recently brought out a Policy Brief on COVAX.

They just want to come up with new investment opportunities

COVAX was set up as a multi-stakeholder group by two other multi-stakeholder groups, GAVI (the Vaccine Alliance) and CEPI (the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations), in partnership with the WHO. Both GAVI and CEPI have strong ties with the World Economic Forum (which was one of the founders of CEPI) as well as the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and both are also connected to companies like Pfizer, GlaxoSmithKline, AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson through manufacturer partnerships (GAVI) or as 'supporters' (CEPI). Even though COVAX is funded predominantly by governments, it is these corporate-centred coalitions that are overseeing its roll-out.

The contrast between the multi-stakeholder approach and a 'classic' multilateral one came to the surface when South Africa and India proposed the so-called TRIPS waiver at the end of last year. They requested a temporary lifting of intellectual property rules on all COVID-19 technologies in order to boost the manufacturing and distribution of vaccines and other essential medical products in mainly developing countries. WHO director general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a speech that he backed the proposal. “But GAVI, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation – even Bill Gates himself – and Big Pharma opposed this proposal very strongly,” said Nandi. “It's more important for them to protect their interests and market mechanisms than to protect universal health or protect people from COVID.” The WHO was approached for comment but has not replied.

Again, there is a stark choice between a human rights-led approach carried out by the UN and a profit-led approach carried out by multistakeholder bodies representing the interests of corporations. In the case of COVAX – which is failing to meet its modest aim of vaccinating 20% of the populations of low- and middle-income countries – the former has won out.

Stake out stakeholder capitalism

So even if the WEF (or Bill Gates) is not responsible for the COVID pandemic, even if the vaccines are not laced with microchips to control our thoughts, something fishy really is going on in the realm of global governance. If you value your right to public health, to privacy, to access healthy food or to democratic representation, be wary of the words 'stakeholder capitalism’ when they pop up at the next Davos summit.

I listen to Steve Bannon’s podcast for four hours a day, every day. While its purported focus is the pandemic, at this point the show has devolved into a pro-beheading cesspool of election-related conspiracy theories.

On the show, Bannon frequently brags about the size and diversity of his audience (the show is at the time of publication ranked 55th in Apple Podcast’s rankings). But though he considers himself a leader and a patriot, Bannon has failed his audience by deliberately squandering the opportunity to tell them the truth about urgent matters related to the election and the coronavirus pandemic. Instead, he serves them lies and conspiracy theories about voter fraud and other vague, random Breitbart-style brain worms. In these sputtering sunset hours of the Trump legal defense, he’s live on YouTube for four hours every day repeating some combination of the following rabbit holes and falsehoods.

As such, Media Matters has compiled a nonexhaustive list of his various deranged election conspiracy theories and has ranked them from “extraordinarily” to “completely.”

1. “The Great Reset” conspiracy theory

Derangement rating: Extraordinarily

Bannon has embraced a conspiracy theory about The Great Reset initiative led by the World Economic Forum, the organization focusing on public-private partnership that hosts the world leaders, billionaires, and business leaders at an annual gathering in Davos, Switzerland. Of all his falsehoods, this one is perhaps the most vague and unhinged.

The World Economic Forum (WEF) describes the Great Reset initiative as a collaborative effort among the organization’s sponsors “to build a new social contract that honours the dignity of every human being” in rebuilding a post-COVID world. The language may be vague and slightly creepy, but the initiative has no governance or enforcement mechanism -- its scope doesn’t extend beyond discourse. The Great Reset is also the title of a book written by Klaus Schwab, the founder and executive director of the World Economic Forum.

In Bannon-land, the great reset is an opportunity for the elite cabal to “depopulate” the earth to 500 million, then genetically engineer humankind using “the convergence of artificial intelligence, advances in chip design and bioengineering.” He explains that the Democrats are attempting to “steal this election” because “if they can thwart the will of the people in this country,” they’ll be able to achieve the great reset by taking down populist movements in other countries as well.

They never want to talk about the bioengineering piece, right. The singularity is on one side homo sapiens, on the other side is something that’s post-homo sapien.

That singularity is going to be within the lifetime of our children. Maybe in the next 20, 25, 30, years. They don’t want to talk about that. That’s not conspiracy theory. I don’t have my -- it’s just a Harvard Business School case, right, to be deconstructed. And it’s obvious the direction they’re taking this, the great reset. Listen, we’re winning. But victory begets victory so Jack, I love the speech but hey, if they steal this election, it’s not about Trump. It’s not about Donald Trump as a person. If they steal this election they have basically thwarted the will of the people in the greatest republic in mankind’s history. If they can thwart the will of the people in this country, that’s how they try to break Brazil. That’s how they try to break Italy. That’s how they try to break the lao bai xing, the diaspora of the Chinese.

On November 20, Bannon returned to the conspiracy theory, saying “the deplorables understand” that Democrats are “trying to steal” the election in order to implement the great reset, which will involve “the convergence of advanced chip design, robotics, artificial intelligence with biotechnology.”

2. Donald Trump was reelected president

Derangement ranking: Extremely

On November 7, Joe Biden was declared the victor of the 2020 presidential election. But Bannon continues to tell his audience the opposite. On November 19, he claimed President Donald Trump “brought home the greatest victory in the history of this country in a presidential election.” He frequently repeats this talking point.

3. Democrats are responsible for widespread voter fraud

Derangement ranking: Utterly

Like his comrade and personal attorney to the president Rudy Giuliani, Bannon is all in on baseless accusations of widespread voter fraud by Democrats. As is the case with most the show, Bannon is light on details, heavy on apocalyptic innuendo. It is difficult to nail down Bannon’s exact allegations, as they often vary from rant to rant, but its essence is as follows: Democrats used fake ballots and manipulated voting processes to steal the presidency from Trump. (This theory fails to account for the fact that Democrats lost ground in the House and failed to flip most available Senate seats held by Republicans.)

Without specifying where this took place or how he got this figure, Bannon said on November 23 that “Donald Trump was up by 800,000 votes before all the illegal ballots came in,” falsely suggesting that all ballots counted after election night were illegal.

Bannon falsely claimed on November 20 that Democrats “got caught cheating in Michigan, massively.” According to MLive, “There are no credible allegations of fraud or irregularities that would change” Joe Biden’s victory in the state.

On November 13, Bannon said ballots need to be thrown out “wholesale” instead of “onesies, twosies” because Democrats have got “the finesse working bigly,” referring to spurious allegations of voter fraud.

On the November 4 show -- as large numbers of mail-in ballots were still being counted and many battleground states had not yet been called -- Bannon suggested that the mail-in votes in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania, that had just been counted in the state was evidence of fraud (when in fact it is a normal and expected development) and said “This is the problem, ladies and gentlemen. 50,000 is -- I mean, this is what’s going to drive people crazy. … How does this just kind of materialize?”

Bannon said Democrats are “going to steal this election. You know why they’re going to steal this election? Because they don’t think you’re going to do anything about it.”

4. The Dominion Voter Systems conspiracy theory

Derangement ranking: Downright

The Dominion Voter Systems conspiracy theory has been at the center of Trump’s legal team’s meltdown. Dominion Voter Systems is a software company used by local and state governments around the country to facilitate voting. Right-wing media and other bad faith actors have been pushing the false notion that Dominion software switched votes from Trump to Biden. Mainstream media outlets have repeatedly debunked the conspiracy theory, which has been a staple of War Room: Pandemic.

Bannon cited former federal prosecutor Sidney Powell on November 23 to claim that based on “evidence” that “hasn’t been provided” by Powell, Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp may have been bribed by a former lobbyist from Dominion to contract with the company. He continued: “I’m sure if Sidney Powell is saying that directionally she’s working on something.”

A few days earlier, on November 20, Bannon had a meltdown reacting to Fox News host Dana Perino’s suggestion Dominion Voter Systems should sue Sidney Powell for her false allegations about the company.
