AI Overview
The Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MI) is actively representing pro-Palestinian student activists at the University of Michigan (U of M). Legal actions include a federal civil rights lawsuit against U of M officials, campus police, and private contractors for the alleged targeting, surveillance, and arrest of student advocates. [1, 2, 3]
Key developments and legal actions concerning CAIR-MI and U of M students:
- Federal Civil Rights Lawsuit: CAIR-MI, alongside the Sugar Law Center for Economic & Social Justice, filed a federal civil rights lawsuit on behalf of Josiah Walker, a Black Muslim student advocate, citing unconstitutional punishment, unlawful arrest, and harassment. [1, 2]
- DOJ Indictments: Federal prosecutors and the DOJ unsealed indictments against pro-Palestinian activists linked to the University of Michigan following coordinated FBI and state law enforcement raids. [1]
- Free Speech Advocacy: CAIR-MI has actively pushed back against disciplinary sanctions on pro-Palestinian student groups—such as the Students Allied for Freedom and Equality (SAFE)—arguing that public universities are violating students' First Amendment rights by selectively punishing them for political advocacy. [1, 2]

The Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-MI) today expressed serious concerns regarding the recently unsealed indictments arising from protests at the University of Michigan, warning that while allegations of criminal conduct should be addressed through the judicial process, charging documents should not blur the line between alleged unlawful acts and constitutionally protected political expression, peaceful protest, and advocacy on matters of public concern.

Eight people who federal prosecutors said had ties to the University of Michigan were accused Wednesday of conspiring to threaten campus leaders and others into severing ties with Israel.
An indictment unsealed in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan, accused the pro-Palestinian activists of crossing the line from campus protest to crimes that included threats and vandalism. The defendants face varying charges, but the indictment included federal counts of conspiracy to transmit threats, witness intimidation and destruction of property to prevent seizure.
The charges in Michigan, all felonies that carry the possibility of years in prison, appeared to signify an escalation in the federal government’s efforts to crack down on pro-Palestinian activism that roiled American campuses in recent years.
“Their criminal activity included spray-painting threats, breaking windows and throwing glass jars filled with noxious chemicals into family homes,” the indictment said. “They marked their victims with threatening symbols used by Hamas, including red inverted triangles and red handprints. They used the internet and social media to broadcast their message to ensure their threats and commitment to continuing criminal activity were heard by their victims and others who support Israel.”
The Trump administration has taken a hard line against pro-Palestinian protesters, whose activism after the Hamas-led October 2023 attack on Israel and the subsequent war in Gaza led to tumult on campuses. Until now, the administration had mostly targeted universities themselves over their response to protests, although it did move to strip visas and deport some individual students last year.

A Palestinian middle school student in Michigan who was publicly admonished for refusing to stand for the pledge of allegiance as part of a personal protest against the war on Gaza has settled with her school district following a lawsuit around her first amendment free speech rights.
The teenager, identified as DK in court documents, said she faced racism from a teacher at the East middle school in Plymouth, Michigan, after she did not participate in the pledge. The teacher reportedly told DK to “go back to her country”, Fox 2 Detroit reported.
In a statement following the settlement, DK called the ordeal “terrifying” and “overwhelming” at times.
“But it taught me the importance of speaking up for what I believe is right,” said DK. “I feel proud of the outcome and of being part of something that reinforces how important free speech is. I’ve learned that even when it feels uncomfortable or risky, speaking out can make a difference, not just for me, but for others as well.”
DK, who is 14, chose not to participate in the pledge on 10 January 2025 given the continuing war on Gaza.
“I decided I wanted to sit down because I didn’t feel comfortable standing because of what’s happening in Palestine,” said DK at a February press conference.
After the pledge, DK said that a teacher told the class that “anyone that was sitting down was being very disrespectful to soldiers, to America”. DK said she tried to explain her view to the instructor but was told that if she did not like the US, she should go back to her own country. DK later left the room in tears.
The Arab American Civil Rights League and the American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan later filed a lawsuit in June 2025 against the Plymouth-Canton community schools district on behalf of DK.
As a part of the recent settlement, the Plymouth-Canton community schools district has pledged to provide diversity, sensitivity and first amendment training for staff. The district has also agreed not to punish DK, remove any indication from school files that suggest her protest was inappropriate and provide needed counseling.
Jacob Khalaf, DK’s father, applauded his daughter for her bravery in advocating for her freedom of speech.
“My daughter has shown her strong moral fiber throughout all of this,” he said in a statement to Fox 2 Detroit. “She had the courage to resist when a person in authority tried to make her relinquish her right to free speech, and then, with the help of the ACLU and ACRL, brought a lawsuit to make sure her first amendment rights, as well as those of others, were protected.”
A representative of the district could not be reached for comment by the Guardian.

AN 9 25
Disney and ABC announced Monday that late night comedian Jimmy Kimmel would be returning to his show on Tuesday after he was abruptly taken off the air last week.
NBC reporter Sahil Kapur tweeted the Walt Disney Company's announcement Monday, which stated that while it felt Kimmel's comments about Republicans' response to the death of Charlie Kirk were "ill-timed and thus insensitive," the company had "thoughtful conversations with Jimmy" and "reached the decision to return the show on Tuesday."
Disney's statement comes on the heels of the company losing so many subscribers to its Disney+ platform that the subscription cancellation page reportedly crashed. Business Insider reported that even Americans who didn't personally watch Jimmy Kimmel's show viewed his suspension as "the last straw" and decided to cancel not only their Disney+ and Hulu subscriptions, but to also no longer take Disney cruises or visit Disney theme parks. The Walt Disney Company lost roughly 2 percent of its total market cap in roughly a week, amounting to several billion dollars.
Kimmel's return was praised on social media, though many journalists, political commentators and others observed that the company's decision was almost certainly financially motivated. Journalist David Dayen of the American Prospect wrote that ABC "created a total mess for themselves with this," and that "saying no to bullies is always the better move." Attorney Guy Hamilton-Smith opined that Disney's "thoughtful conversations with Jimmy" were instead "thoughtful conversations with our shareholders."
"Incredible how dumb these companies are. You made everybody mad! Conservatives are gonna be mad you’re putting him back on the air. Liberals were already mad you took him off," tweeted food scientist Isaiah Walker. "All this did was show you stand for nothing, no beliefs, no morals. Just whatever you think earns favor."
"The fight to defend free speech reaffirms our fight to defend the civil rights and liberties of the American people," tweeted Rep. Adriano Espaillat (D-N.Y.) "The voice of the People is hard to ignore."
Author Don Winslow declared that Kimmel's return meant that "WE THE PEOPLE hold the power. Donald Trump does not. Never forget that and start USING YOUR POWER." He added in a separate post: "The ONLY reason @Disney is bringing @jimmykimmel back is because the American people stood up, called out the executives by name, Disney's stock plummeted and Disney lost a lot of money. Get it? That's the playbook for the next three years of Trump. YOU must be LOUDER than him."
'Crazy how fast fascism happens/goes away," wrote Rolling Stone journalist Daniel Boguslaw.

a prominent conservative and Rice Lake native is pushing back against a boycott against a food company with a local “buycott” of its products.}:
The Goya Foods “Buy-cott” arrived in Rice Lake as Foster Friess, 1958 Rice Lake High graduate, joined the efforts occurring around the nation to support freedom of speech, according to a press release from his nonprofit group Foster’s Outriders.
Bob Unanue CEO of Goya Foods, was invited to the White House last week for a summit on Hispanic economic opportunity, and while there praised President Trump.
“We are truly blessed, at the same time, to have a leader like President Trump who is a builder,” said Unanue.
Almost immediately, #BoycottGoya, #GoyaFoods and #Goyaway began trending on social media platforms. Former Democratic presidential candidate Julian Castro, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and “Hamilton” writer Lin-Manuel Miranda joined the boycott calls.
Trump has been criticized because of his derogatory comments about Hispanics and harsh policies toward immigration, such as the separation of families at the U.S.-Mexico border. Hispanics have also been disproportionately hit hard by the coronavirus pandemic and related economic recession, causing them to question Trump’s handling of both.
Friess said, “I do not recall President Obama’s supporters being attacked for their political perspective, so this is not about support for Trump. This is about do we still love America enough to keep alive the abilities of people to treat one another with respect and civility despite opposing political views?”
He added, “People have the right to express political views without their employment or employees being affected.”
Unanue has defended his comments, noting that when President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama asked for his help to publicize healthily eating in the Hispanic community, he travelled to the White House in 2012 and put Goya Foods behind the effort.
Friess said he has cleaned out all the Goya products from Rice Lake grocery stores and delivered them to Lori Bowman Executive Director of Benjamin’s House emergency shelter.
Friess, who made a fortune as a stock broker, is considered a Republican mega-donor. As a resident of Wyoming, he finished second in a race for governor in 2018.
He is also well-known for various philanthropic efforts, including donating $1 million to help those affected by the May 16, 2017, tornado that struck Barron and Rusk counties.

The playbook in action for Nestle
Speaking at the April 1982 Public Affairs Council conference to his colleagues in the PR industry, Pagan revealed the skeleton of the playbook that would last all the way through the Stratfor days.
Pagan International arose out of the ashes of a controversial Nestle public relations campaign named, in Orwellian fashion, the “Nestle Coordination Center for Nutrition.” It was co-run by Pagan and Jack Mongoven.
Mongoven was once a reporter for The Chicago Tribune and served as an executive editor of Pioneer Newspapers before becoming a spokesman for the Department of Health, Education and Welfare and then the Republican National Committee.
Nestle’s Coordination Center for Nutrition began in 1980 as a major public relations effort designed to fend off complaints and an eventual international boycott. Criticism of Nestle was spearheaded by the British group War on Want, which tracked the company’s marketing of powdered baby milk in the developing world in a 1974 investigation called “The Baby Killer.”
Nestle had decided the developing world would be a good place to sell its baby formula, despite the fact that the formula interrupted women’s lactation process and prevented their breasts from producing enough milk.
“Women who were induced to use [the] formula in place of breast milk often had no choice but to dilute the formula with contaminated water, leading to diarrhea, dehydration and death among … infants,” explain John Stauber and Sheldon Rampton in their book, “Toxic Sludge Is Good for You! Lies, Damn Lies and the Public Relations Industry.”
This behavior by Nestle created a global uproar and eventually planted the seeds of a boycott by more than 700 churches and activist groups.
Mongoven and Pagan — under the auspices of the Coordination Center for Nutrition, which shared office space with The Tobacco Institute, according to Legacy Tobacco Archive Library documents — decided the best response to the burgeoning social movement was to divide and conquer it.
One of their first strategies was to peel off some of strongest supporters of the anti-Nestle campaign — educators.
“Some of the boycott’s strongest support came from teachers, represented by the National Teachers Association, so NCCN courted support from American Federation of Teachers, a smaller, more conservative rival union,” wrote Stauber and Rampton.
Nestle also won over an ally from the inside of another institutional opponent: churches.
“To counter the churches involved in the boycott, they needed to find a strong church that would take their side,” Stauber and Rampton further explained. “The United Methodists were supporting the boycott, but through negotiations and piecemeal concessions, Nestle gradually succeeded in winning them over.”
To make amends, Nestle worked with the Infant Formula Audit Commission to ensure its global marketing practices were in line with World Health Organization rules. It was chaired by Edmund Muskie, a former U.S. senator and U.S. secretary of state under President Jimmy Carter.
The problem: Nestle created the commission, funded it and called all the shots. Few equipped with this knowledge were surprised when the commission concluded “the company has not been improperly ‘dumping’ baby formula on Third World hospitals,” as explained in The Los Angeles Times.
Muskie’s audit commission — or, better put, Nestle’s — is now seen as a “model” for corporations seeking to defuse sticky communication crises, as documented in a 1986 article in the Journal for Business Strategy.
For his successful efforts running what he would later describe as “a responsive, accurate corporate issue and trends warning system [with] analysis capability,” Pagan received the Public Relations Society of America’s prestigious Silver Anvil Award. Other industries have followed similar strategies, such as the shale gas industry’s“Energy in Depth” and corporate education reform’s “Stand for Children.”...

Sales increased after the controversy. According to news coverage following the controversy:[72]
Chick-fil-A's sales soared 12 percent, to $4.6 billion, in 2012. The good fortune follows several years of impressive expansion and strong sales, which have pushed the privately held company's valuation north of $4.5 billion, making billionaires out of its founders ... These latest sales data are just further proof that all that negative coverage didn't hurt demand for chicken sandwiches among Chick-fil-A's core consumers.

This past Monday I wrote a Daily Kos article about the Republican talk radio host, Rush Limbaugh, being dropped, after 22 years, from the Indianapolis radio station WIBC. Many other news /opinion sites covered the story, as well as IBJ (Indianapolis Business Journal). Most of the stories basically said the move was a simple change in direction:
Officials for WIBC parent Emmis Communications this month notified Los Angeles-based syndicator Premiere Networks that it would not extend its deal to air Limbaugh’s show.
Here's where the IBJ piece was a little different. Emmis' local market manager, Charlie Morgan, said the mega company's decision to drop Limbaugh was much more than a simple change - and they have been contemplating this move for 18 months.
While Morgan expects some WIBC listeners to be “hugely disappointed” by the change, he said losing Limbaugh could open up the station to more advertising opportunities.
"There are some—primarily national—advertisers that refuse to air commercials during Limbaugh’s show, Morgan explained. "
Emmis officials began notifying its advertisers of the change Monday.
And there it is - bonafide proof once again, that the boycott against Rush Limbaugh and his sponsors is not only working, it's remarkably effective. It's changing the face of talk radio altogether. Right now the biggest problem with radio - is Rush Limbaugh. And the hundreds of thousands of Limbaugh boycotters couldn't be more pleased.
Advertisers can't handle the pressure and loss of customers. Most companies, other than those run by Republican Dittoheads, are avoiding Rush Limbaugh like the plague. This was not the case in 2012. That year, self-proclaimed 'El Rushbo' enjoyed sitting on the king's throne of Conservative 'hate radio' with a plethora of large lucrative sponsors. That all changed after he called an unknown college student a
while she advocated for insurance-paid birth control at a congressional hearing. Once Limbaugh's rant hit social media and went viral, huge sponsors like Ford, GM, McDonald's, Subway, Carbonite…began to pull their ads immediately after seeing the public's outrage. Yes, the good old days are long gone for Limbaugh, though his camp begs to differ and continues to make lame attempts to derail the boycott Limbaugh used tojoke about. Also, his PR team is now blitzing search engines like Google with 10 or more RushLimbaugh.com stories per day - from the same show. Guess they need those page views to generate revenue because it sure isn't coming from sponsors.
Kudos, once again, to the many individuals, groups/organizations and websites involved in this successful movement. They are not mentioned enough. It's been a slow, agonizing fall for Rush Limbaugh, and it's given the protestors some pretty glorious victories and affirmations along the way. There will be more celebrations to come. Some organizations like NOW (The National Organization For Women) NARAL Pro-Choice America, and Planned Parenthoodhave been after Limbaugh for years. The amazing StopRush volunteers have been relentless. Other Limbaugh protestors and bashers include:
News Websites/Blogs like Media Matters, Daily Kos, Daily Kos 'Sluts', Liberals Unite, UniteWomen.org, Addicting Info, Occupy Democrats, ReverbPress, The Smoking Gun, Alternet, UntraViolet, and Huffington Post.
Facebook Pages like Boycott Rush Limbaugh's Sponsors To Shut Him Down, Being Liberal, Honoring Richard Myers, Pro-Choice Liberals, Miss R*EVOLutionaries, Chicks on the Left, Living Blue In Texas, Pragmatic Progressives, Everlasting GOP Stoppers, Too Informed To Vote Republican, Worley Dervish, Lady Grey, The Beer Party, Lady Liberals, Red State Dems, The Ale Party, One Million Sluts Against Rush Limbaugh and Political Loudmouth.
Facebook 'Groups' like FlushRush, Join The Fight To Flush Rush, Fight Laws Against Women, Pro-Choice Democrats, End Citizens United, ERA Action, and Stop Republican Laws Against Women.
Well Known Individuals like Gloria Steinem, Jon Stewart, Lewis Black, Rachel Maddow, Al Franken, Stephen Colbert, Peter Gabriel, Spike Lee, Andy Borowitz, Crystal Ball, the late, great George Carlin, Ed Shultz, Sandra Fluke, Ice-T, Jane Fonda, and Gloria Allred.
Individuals Equally Important include the late Daily Kos diarist Richard Myers, Wojtek Wacowski, Rick Unger, Cenk Uygur, Angelo Carusone, Karen Teegarden, Jen Senko, Matthew Desmond, Samuel Wynn Warde, Kimberley Johnson, HRHPrissy, Freya Malin, John Jorgenson, Kitty Fitzgerald, LOrion, ProgLegs, Gary Flinn, and Certinot.
The list is massive. The Limbaugh Sponsor & Clear Channel/iHeart Petition, alone has over 131,000 signatures.
