Marty J. Jackley (born October 13, 1970) is an American attorney from the U.S. state of <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Dakota" title="South Dakota">South Dakota</a>. He serves as the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attorney_General_of_South_Dakota" title="Attorney General of South Dakota">Attorney General of South Dakota</a>. Previously, he served as the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Attorney" title="United States Attorney">United States Attorney</a> for the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_District_Court_for_the_District_of_South_Dakota" title="United States District Court for the District of South Dakota">District of South Dakota</a>.

<h2>Early life and education</h2>

Marty was raised in <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sturgis,_South_Dakota" title="Sturgis, South Dakota">Sturgis, South Dakota</a> and graduated from the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Dakota_School_of_Mines_and_Technology" title="South Dakota School of Mines and Technology">South Dakota School of Mines and Technology</a> in 1992 with his <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bachelor_of_Science" title="Bachelor of Science">B.S.</a> in <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electrical_engineering" title="Electrical engineering">electrical engineering</a> cum laude. He received his <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juris_Doctor" title="Juris Doctor">J.D.</a> from the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_South_Dakota_School_of_Law" title="University of South Dakota School of Law">University of South Dakota School of Law</a> in 1995.

<h2>Career</h2>

From 1995-97, Jackley served as a law clerk for former Chief Judge <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Howard_Battey" title="Richard Howard Battey">Richard Battey</a> in federal district court. Jackley joined the Rapid City law firm of Gunderson, Palmer, Nelson, and Ashmore. As a partner, his practice areas focused on construction & engineering law and real property disputes. At that time, he also served as a Special Assistant Attorney General for South Dakota prosecuting controlled substance felonies.

<h3>US Attorney for the District of South Dakota</h3>

In 2006, Jackley was recommended by U.S. Senator <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Thune" title="John Thune">John Thune</a> and nominated by President <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_W._Bush" title="George W. Bush">George W. Bush</a> to be <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Attorney" title="United States Attorney">United States Attorney</a> for the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_District_Court_for_the_District_of_South_Dakota" title="United States District Court for the District of South Dakota">District of South Dakota</a>. Later in 2006, Jackley was unanimously confirmed by the US Senate. Marty was named the South Dakota Prosecutor of the Year in 2008 from the South Dakota State’s Attorneys Association. Jackley was succeeded as U.S. Attorney by <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brendan_Johnson" title="Brendan Johnson">Brendan Johnson</a>.

<h2>Personal life</h2>

Marty and his wife Angela live in <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pierre,_South_Dakota" title="Pierre, South Dakota">Pierre, South Dakota</a> with their two children, Michael and Isabella. Marty also presently serves as Chairman of the Conference of Western Attorneys General and Vice-Chairman of the National Association of Attorneys General.

Marty Jackley was sworn in as the 30th Attorney General for South Dakota, serving as the chief law enforcement officer and legal advisor for the State. Marty was raised in Sturgis and graduated from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology in 1992 with his Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering with Honors. He received his law degree from the University of South Dakota School of Law in 1995. Marty became a partner in the Rapid City law firm of Gunderson, Palmer, Nelson and Ashmore, where he specialized in criminal, civil and business litigation.

In 2006, he was unanimously confirmed by the US Senate as US Attorney for South Dakota. Marty was named the South Dakota Prosecutor of the Year in 2008. He presently serves as the President-Elect of the National Association of Attorneys General, and is the former Chair of the Conference of Western Attorneys General.

Marty and his wife Angela live in Pierre with their two children, Michael and Isabella.
