the Washington Examiner’s Gabe Kaminsky discussed his new investigative report detailing the ties Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) has to a Muslim cleric, who in one case has promoted a movie praising Adolf Hitler on social media.

The cleric in question, Asad Zaman, is from the Muslim American Society of Minnesota, whom Walz has hosted on at least five different occasions. Kaminsky stated that this group was deemed as “an offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood” in 2008 in a terrorism financing case.

“But this individual, Asad Zaman, has a controversial history on social media, on his Facebook page,” Kaminsky told the Daily Wire’sBen Shapiro when discussing his report. “He has, in one case, promoted a pro-Hitler movie, a movie that glorifies Adolf Hitler. On Oct. 7, when 1,200 Israelis were slaughtered in the Jewish state, his immediate response was to say that Palestinians had a right to resist, a right to defend themselves. And this individual has promoted other conspiracy theories on his social media history.”IFrame Content

The movie in question that Zaman promoted was titled The Greatest Story Never Told, which was released in 2013 and shared by Zaman in 2015. The Muslim cleric has also used his Facebook page over the years to share Hamas press releases, as well as blog posts on antisemitic websites slamming Jews, according to Kaminsky’s report.

The question of Walz’s connection to Zaman has come under the spotlight after the Minnesota governor was selected by Vice President Kamala Harris as her 2024 running mate. Kaminsky said that the Harris campaign claimed that Walz “has no relationship with this individual.”

One other factor that Kaminsky’s report unearthed was how the MAS of Minnesota received over $100,000 under Walz’s leadership, which was given in three separate payments. Kaminsky explained that the first two payments were for mosque security, while the third is a 2024 grant from the Labor Department “that has not disbursed yet.”

“That’s what the agency had told me, but it will soon be disbursed,” Kaminsky said. “It’s just a matter of when Zaman’s organization files a report with the state to get that reimbursement.”

Besides Walz’s connection to Zaman, another issue with the Minnesota governor that has come into question is his time in the National Guard, with some questioning if he left the military before deployment to pursue his congressional career. Former Minnesota National Guard Command Sgt. Maj. Doug Julin, Walz’s superior, stated that Walz used “a backdoor process” to exit the military before pursuing politics.

Julin explained that he was informed, along with his commander, in the fall of 2004 “that we would be alerted to go to Iraq within the next upcoming year.” A meeting with the command team was then conducted in February 2005, for which Walz was in attendance, and Walz informed Julin of his plans to run for Congress after the meeting.

Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH), former President Donald Trump’s 2024 running mate, has cited Julin’s comments to back his argument that Walz “knew he was going to Iraq” and “decided to quit” so he could instead pursue a congressional run. Vance, a veteran himself, said he was not criticizing Walz’s military service but rather “the fact that he lied about his service for political gain.”

Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Walz, on at least five occasions as governor of Minnesota, hosted a Muslim cleric who celebrated Hamas‘s Oct. 7 attack last year on Israel and promoted a film popular among Neo-Nazis that glorifies Adolf Hitler, the Washington Examiner found.

The imam, Asad Zaman of the Muslim American Society of Minnesota, joined other Muslim leaders in May 2023 for a meeting about mosque security with Walz’s gubernatorial office in Minnesota. Zaman alsospoke vid]

at a May 2020 event to call for peaceful protests with the governor during the riots in Minnesota sparked after George Floyd’s death. In April 2019, the cleric delivered an invocation before Walz’s state address — just months after Zaman called for an end to a government shutdown at a press conference with Walz in January 2019.

Zaman, moreover, attended a May 2019 event that Walz hosted for Ramadan, social media posts show.

Walz’s ties to Zaman could serve as problematic baggage for the Minnesota governor as he campaigns with Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential nominee. News of the ties also comes after a Washington Free Beacon report this week found Walz spoke at a 2019 event with an antisemitic scholar who has defended terrorism against Israel.

Zaman, who is from Bangladesh, said on Oct. 7 of last year that he “stands in solidarity with Palestinians against Israeli attacks.” That day, which saw 1,200 Israelis murdered by Hamas terrorists, he also shared an image of a Palestinian flag on Facebook in response to a post by Yusuf Abdi Abdulle, director of the Islamic Association of North America, declaring that “Palestine has the right to defend itself.” The Biden-Harris administration, Abdulle wrote in the post, was “on the wrong side of history” in “supporting the extremist Zionist regime and its illegal settlements.”

Zaman, meanwhile, has used his Facebook page over the years to share official Hamas press releases, blog posts on antisemitic websites slamming Jews, and, in one 2015 instance, a link to a piece on a website for a pro-Hitler film called The Greatest Story Never Told. The propaganda movie was released in 2013 and is a favorite among antisemites and QAnon conspiracy influencers, according to the Anti-Defamation League.

“Imam Zaman has a troubling history of playing into classic anti-Jewish themes and justifying violence against Israel,” an Anti-Defamation League spokesperson told the Washington Examiner.

“He also has justified violence against Israel, including from terror groups,” the ADL spokesperson said. “Given his hurtful remarks post-Oct. 7, and absent any recognition of the pain he has caused the Jewish community, we urge all public officials and leaders to avoid meeting with him in the future. Those who have met with Imam Zaman should clarify that they don’t agree with his toxic views about Jews and the Jewish state.”

Asad Zaman’s Nov. 3, 2015, Facebook post, left, linking to a pro-Hitler film, pictured right, called The Greatest Story Never Told. Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Walz (D-MN) has hosted Zaman as governor of Minnesota.

On Oct. 8 of last year, in response to Rep. Katie Porter (D-CA) condemning the Oct. 7 attack, Zaman asked the congresswoman if she would be willing to “reaffirm the right of Palestinians to defend themselves.” The Muslim American Society of Minnesota said in a statement on Oct. 7 that it “reaffirms its unwavering support for the Palestinian people in their struggle against the Israeli occupation.”

In recent years, Zaman has also appeared to equate Hamas committing terrorism to Israel defending itself. State records reviewed by the Washington Examiner show Walz’s administration has awarded over $100,000 in funding to MAS Minnesota.

“If Palestinians are punished for electing Hamas, why is Israel not punished for electing this genocidal maniac as its leader?” Zaman said in May 2021. He was replying to former Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett, who stated, “I’ve killed lots of Arabs in my life — and there’s no problem with that,” in the context of catching terrorists.

Upon Minnesota Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party Chairman Ken Martin posting on social media last year that he was “beyond heartbroken” to learn Israelis he knew were “brutally killed or kidnapped” on Oct. 7, Zaman replied that Martin’s group “cannot be joined at the hip to apartheid Israel and still hope to court the Muslim vote.”

To Sam Westrop, a terrorism researcher and analyst at the Middle East Forum think tank, Walz’s ties to Zaman shows anti-Israel extremists may be given a platform in a potential Harris-Walz administration. Harris leads former President Donald Trump by 0.5%, according to a RealClearPolitics polling average.

“It is astounding that with all the available public reporting and information about the iniquities of Imam Asad Zaman and MAS Minnesota that Gov. Walz has repeatedly given public platforms and taxpayer money to this extremist,” Westrop told the Washington Examiner. “Across the country, Islamists hungry for government support will surely welcome Walz as vice president.”

The Muslim American Society was once described by federal prosecutors as being “founded as the overt arm of the Muslim Brotherhood in the United States,” court records show. The MAS, which the United Arab Emirates designated as a terrorist group in 2014, came under fire in 2019 after a video surfaced online of children at an event held by its Philadelphia chapter calling for the murder of Jews.

“We will chop off their heads, and we will liberate the sorrowful and exalted Al-Aqsa Mosque,” two young girls said at the event, according to the Times of Israel.

Walz’s office and Minnesota’s Muslim American Society did not reply to requests for comment.

PAC targeting Republican for ‘Swamp’ ties leans on DC dark money and billionaire Democrat

An outside group cutting large checks to oust Nebraska’s senior GOP senator, while slamming her for “D.C. Swamp” ties, is heavily funded by a massive Democratic dark money group in Washington, D.C., and LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman.

Nebraska Railroaders for Public Safety, a super PAC calling itself “a voice for the working people” in the deep red state of Nebraska, has spent $432,000 on ads opposing Sen. Deb Fischer (R-NE) and boosting Dan Osborn, a U.S. Navy veteran and industrial mechanic running as an independent, according to Federal Election Commission filings. But none of the PAC’s public war chest appears to have actually come from donors in the Cornhusker State.

Ahead of the election in November, Nebraska Railroaders for Public Safety is seeking to link Fischer to the “Swamp,” declaring last week in a social media post, “Senator Fischer has spent 12 years grifting off the corporate corruption [in] Washington, D.C.” In May, the super PAC said the Republican’s “top donations are just a horror show of [the] D.C. swamp,” pointing to support she received from a PAC affiliated with Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX).

But the effort to frame Fischer as affiliated with the “Swamp” could be a tough line of attack for Nebraska Railroaders for Public Safety: The super PAC receives the bulk of its publicly available funding from Hoffman and Sixteen Thirty Fund, a Democratic dark money “heavyweight” linked to the larger Arabella Advisors dark money network in the nation’s capital.

The Sixteen Thirty Fund nonprofit group cut a $50,000 check to the super PAC in April following a $50,000 Hoffman donation last year to the group, financial disclosures show. Hoffman, a megadonor backing Vice President Kamala Harris, reportedly has a net worth of roughly $2.5 billion.

The super PAC’s third-largest publicly available donor, at $24,500, is Retire Career Politicians, a separate group in Washington, D.C., that received a $300,000 cash infusion in May from Sixteen Thirty Fund.

In turn, Retire Career Politicians, which launched in April of this year, has spent over $2 million since May supporting Osborn, records show.

‘Astroturfed operation’

The giving from Hoffman, Sixteen Thirty Fund, and Retire Career Politicians made up roughly 71% of all donations to Nebraska Railroaders for Public Safety between November 2023 and June of this year, according to a Washington Examiner analysis of federal records. The PAC launched last fall, statement of organization documents show.

“This is just another Democratic astroturfed operation,” said Dan Backer, a campaign finance expert and attorney in Washington, D.C. “They’ll complain about the ‘Swamp’ while relying on dark money and literally the guy who started LinkedIn.”

Speaking to the Washington Examiner, Nebraska Railroaders for Public Safety treasurer and co-founder Michael Helmink said it’s difficult to interface with his out-of-state donors from his home in western Nebraska. More recent donations to Nebraska Railroaders for Public Safety will become public in October.

“We do Zoom calls and things like that, you know?” Helmink, who noted that he co-founded the super PAC with the California-based political consultant Adriel Hampton, said in an interview.

IFrame Content

Helmink, a longtime railroad worker and labor leader, said his donor contacts came from when he had his own exploratory committee last year to consider running for the Nebraska Senate seat.

“We reached out to pretty much anybody,” he told the Washington Examiner. “Anybody interested in rail safety, anybody interested in flipping the seat to an independent. Reaching out the Republican side has been tough. So what we ended up with was, you know, progressive Democrats — people trying to make changes in different areas.”

“That’s the kind of people that gravitated towards us,” Helmink said.

According to recent federal data, Texas led the way in the U.S. in 2023 with the most highway-rail grade collision crossings. Nebraska falls within the top 25 states for the most collisions at 21, just after Missouri and Iowa.

Nebraska Railroaders for Public Safety supports “requiring two-person crews to protect against derailments” and “increasing fines for violating federal rail safety laws so these giant corporations take safety regulations seriously,” according to the group’s website.

‘We spend it like it’s our own’

To Republican political strategist Brad Todd, the group’s funding illustrates how national Democrats often keep the lights on for entities that present themselves as grassroots. It’s not necessarily an uncommon maneuver: In July, the Washington Examiner reported on how left-wing billionaires share ties to an astroturfed operation in states attacking House Republicans. The GOP also faces scrutiny for apparent astroturfed campaigns.

“If you follow the money here, it goes right back to the most hardcore, bare-knuckled liberal donors in the country,” Todd said.

National Republican Senatorial Campaign spokesman Philip Letsou said it’s “no surprise” Osborn is “being propped up by far-left dark money groups and Epstein-tied billionaires like Reid Hoffman.”

“Osborn is Chuck Schumer’s sock-puppet who wants to eliminate the filibuster and pass the Democrats’ radical agenda,” Letsou said. The Osborn campaign did not return a request for comment.

Nebraska Railroaders for Public Safety has paid roughly $100,000 to the firm of its co-founder, Hampton, on ads boosting Osborn, the Nebraska candidate.

“He’s very good at digital media and video editing, things like that,” Helmink said of Hampton. “That’s what I rely on him for.”

IFrame Content

The Cook Political Report, a nonpartisan elections tracker, rates the Nebraska Senate seat as “Solid Republican” in 2024. Still, public polling has found Fischer and Osborn neck and neck, with the Republican leading by just 2 percentage points in an August survey by YouGov among registered voters.

Another poll in August by SurveyUSA among registered voters found Fischer ahead by 1 point.

Hoffman did not return a request for comment through his venture capital firm, Greylock Partners.

Sixteen Thirty Fund did not reply to a request for comment.

“We started this thing on a shoestring budget,” Helmink told the Washington Examiner. “Slowly, as support has come in, we’ve added staff, we’ve added research, and we’ve kind of upped our presence as the money allows. The big thing is we spend the money very wisely.”

“We spend it like it’s our own,” Helmink added.

Ex-Biden climate adviser spins through revolving door to lobbying firm

Gabe Kaminsky - September 23, 2024 5:43 pm

A former senior climate adviser to President Joe Biden’s Department of Energy has spun through the revolving door to join a lobbying firm focused on green energy issues.

Karen Skelton, an ex-senior DOE policy adviser who has aided Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm and senior climate diplomat John Podesta since 2021, is joining Boundary Stone Partners as a senior adviser, E&E News reported. Boundary Stone Partners was hired by 45 clients in 2024 and heavily lobbies on issues related to energy and nuclear power, as well as the manufacturing sector, according to OpenSecrets, a nonpartisan lobbying tracker.

“I look forward to building on Boundary Stone Partners’ quality work on climate policy and the energy transition,” Skelton said. “Their work is instrumental to advancing climate solutions in the United States, and I’m thrilled to be a part of it.”

The job move illustrates how federal staffers often cash in on their government service to accept roles at deep-pocketed companies, including those lobbying on issues that staffers helped shape on the dime of taxpayers.

:{:{Jennifer Granholm testifies before the Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee during a hearing to examine her nomination.}:

Skelton “organized and administered private and public sector engagement in key U.S. states to support passage of the Inflation Reduction Act,” a massive climate spending law under Biden, according to Skelton’s LinkedIn account. Boundary Stone Partners, for instance, lobbied on behalf of clients in connection to the Inflation Reduction Act, federal records show.

During the Biden-Harris administration, Boundary Stone Partners has deployed more lobbyists to the Energy Department each year than any other agency, according to lobbying disclosures. Over 30% of its lobbyists in 2024 have been through the revolving door, OpenSecrets found.

A former longtime political consultant, Skelton will advise clients of Boundary Stone Partners on navigating public-private partnerships, according to E&E News.

“Karen’s expertise in policy development and implementation in partnership with the private sector will be a tremendous asset to our team as we continue to drive the critical work needed to support the transition to a clean energy economy,” Sydney Bopp, managing partner at the firm, said in a statement.

Biden White House hosted leader of Hamas-linked group

Investigations

EXCLUSIVE — President Joe Biden’s White House National Security Council recently hosted the leader of a group with a track record of collaborating in Gaza with Hamas officials, the Washington Examiner confirmed.

The NSC held a meeting in Washington, D.C., on Sept. 11 with Syrian-American community leaders, including Shadi Zaza, CEO of the Michigan-based organization Rahma Worldwide, according to the NSC and Rahma. Unearthed social media posts and Arabic news sources show Zaza and his group have a history of meeting and partnering with Hamas officials on aid initiatives — including just days before the Palestinian terrorist faction’s Oct. 7 attack on Israel in 2023.

“We have spoken at length about our condemnation of Hamas and the horrible atrocities they committed on Oct. 7,” an NSC spokesperson said.

Speaking to the Washington Examiner, the spokesperson insisted the NSC was not aware of Zaza’s ties to Hamas and that the meeting focused on countering Syria’s Assad regime rather than on Gaza matters.

Still, news of the meeting will likely further incense Republicans in Congress, who have faulted the Biden-Harris administration for, at times, platforming anti-Israel activists who have appeared to sympathize with Hamas and make derogatory comments about Jews. A Syrian-American community leader crafted the September guest list, which was approved by the Secret Service, a source familiar said.

The Secret Service did not return a request for comment.

But the NSC staffers who allowed someone “openly supporting a foreign terrorist organization like Hamas to enter the Eisenhower Executive Office Building are either grossly incompetent or fully support Hamas,” according to a senior GOP Senate aide who works on national security matters.

In August 2024, Rahma Vice President Adib Choiki signed a joint cooperation agreement with Majed Abu Ramadan of Hamas’s Gaza Health Ministry for a blood drive in Gaza, according to Palestinian media. It was hardly the first collaboration with Hamas officials.

Just days before Hamas’s deadly Oct. 7 terrorist attack, Zaza and other Rahma staffers were pictured in Gaza for another aid initiative for low-income families with officials from the Hamas-run Ministry of Social Development, according to images and Palestinian reports. The meetings came around the same time that the Biden-Harris administration’s Department of Health and Human Services granted almost $175,000 to Rahma for a vaccine program, federal spending records show.

Kuwait’s Islamic Heritage Revival Society, a terrorist group sanctioned by the U.S. government for funding al Qaeda, helped back the October 2023 Rahma-tied initiative, social media posts show. Attending one event in Gaza last October for the programming alongside Zaza was Hamas official Sami Barhoum.

The ties between Rahma and Hamas run deeper, according to Sam Westrop, director of the Middle East Forum think tank’s Islamist Watch project. Rahma “appears to be a key component of a Hamas-aligned network in the United States,” according to Westrop.

Rahma insisted in a statement to the Washington Examiner that it has “no affiliation with any political groups or militant factions.”

“Our involvement in Gaza focuses exclusively on humanitarian support while we abide by international standards of aid work, working through recognized channels to ensure the delivery of essential services,” a Rahma official said. “We refute any suggestion of our support for terror-related activities. Our mission is solely to aid the vulnerable and displaced.”

“Dr. Zaza’s visit to the [White House] is confidential,” continued the official for Rahma, a nonprofit group registered with the IRS.

Back in 2021, after signing an aid agreement with Hamas’s Health Ministry, Rahma’s CEO also met with senior Hamas official Ghazi Hamad at the Palestinian Ministry of Social Development, according to a Facebook post unearthed by Westrop.

White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre speaks during the daily briefing at the White House in Washington, Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2024. (AP Photo/Manuel Balce Ceneta)

After the Oct. 7 attack, the Hamas official pledged more terrorist attacks “time and again until Israel is annihilated.”

“Everything we do is justified,” the Hamas official said in October of last year.

In a 2023 speech, Zaza disclosed Rahma’s work with Hamas’s “Ministry of Social Development, the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research, the Ministry of Education, and the General Administration of Zakat” on university funding and other Gaza-based initiatives.

The event where Zaza made those remarks, a luxury hotel in Gaza City, was reported in 2011 to be located “next door” to a Hamas military training camp.

Rahma has also coordinated Palestinian aid efforts with Aid 48, a Turkish Hamas front group, according to Jewish News Syndicate.

“That Rahma officials are meeting and partnering with senior Hamas figures in the same week they receive government funding is appalling,” Westrop said. “The federal government is subsidizing terror.”

A source familiar said the September NSC meeting featured “working level staffers,” not White House leadership.

The HHS did not return a request for comment.

To Marc Greendorfer, an attorney at the Zachor Legal Institute, Rahma could still open itself up to legal problems even if its collaboration with Hamas officials has been for non-terrorism-related activity.

“As such, they not only would be liable in criminal and civil litigation for providing material support to terror and aiding and abetting a foreign terror organization, they would be in violation of IRS 501(c)(3) rules and should have their tax-exempt status revoked,” Greendorfer said.

Tim Walz promoted research facility that partners with China’s Wuhan lab

ByGabe Kaminsky

September 6, 2024

Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN) has long promoted a Minnesota-based medical research center with a history of working with the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China, according to records reviewed by the Washington Examiner.

The center in Walz’s home state of Minnesota, the Hormel Institute, often collaborates on research with the WIV, the institute in Wuhan, China, at the center of the COVID-19 lab leak theory. For over a decade, Walz has held meetings with the Hormel Institute and toured the research center, which has thanked Walz for securing it millions of dollars in funding, records show.

News of the ties between the Walz-allied research center and the WIV comes as the Democratic vice presidential nominee faces a congressional investigation over his “extensive” connections to China. This year, the U.S. government halted federal funding to a nonprofit group that worked with the lab in Wuhan — where the FBI has said COVID-19 likely emerged. Walz has reportedly traveled 30 times to China, including for his honeymoon, and he said in 2016 that he does not “fall into the category that China necessarily needs to be an adversarial relationship” with the United States.

“For 80+ years, the Hormel Institute has helped pave the way for Minnesota to lead in biomedical innovation,” Walz said in April of the Minnesota group, which Fox News previously reported is linked to a Chinese military-backed company called Beijing Genomics Institute. “It was great to stop by their facilities yesterday in Austin to see that work in action.”

The Hormel Institute is based in Austin, Minnesota. In Walz’s telling, the organization “fits with where we see ourselves as a state [in the future] … a future around … green energy, sustainable agriculture, and the ability to feed a very hungry world … and the ability to be one of the nation’s designated biotech hubs,” according to a Hormel Institute press release.

As a congressman, Walz helped secure over $2 million for the Hormel Institute’s technology acquisitions and was a “strong advocate for The Hormel Institute, including by supporting its major expansions,” the Minnesota-based group said in April of this year. Moreover, in 2008, Walz reportedly pushed for a $5 million federal earmark for the University of Minnesota-housed group and has visited the Hormel Institute to discuss ways to increase its federal funding.

In recent years, researchers at the Hormel Institute have teamed up with the Wuhan Institute of Virology on a variety of projects, including in 2020 for a COVID-19 study and as recently as this year on structural biology research.

The COVID-19 study, titled “A dynamic regulatory interface on SARS-CoV-2 RNA polymerase,” was authored by four WIV researchers, three Hormel Institute researchers, and a Yale School of Medicine professor.

In 2020, the Hormel Institute also disclosed in the “funding information” section of a separate EMBO Journal study that it received “help from the Core Facility and Technical Support” of the WIV for “radioactive and fluorescent tests,” the Washington Examiner found.

Bin Liu, a professor at the Hormel Institute who is listed as working on the 2020 EMBO Journal study, attended Wuhan University, according to a copy of his resume. Other researchers for the study included those affiliated with the WIV, the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and China’s Zhengzhou University, federal records show.

Similarly, in January 2024, Hormel Institute researchers published a study on genes with the WIV’s Lina He, Wei Zhou, and Yangbo Hu. The WIV was used for “radioactive tests,” according to page 10 of the study.

The WIV’s Yangbo Hu worked with the Hormel Institute’s Dmytro Kompaniiets, Dong Wang, and Bin Liu on 2023 research titled “Structure and molecular mechanism of bacterial transcription activation,” among other collaborations.

Formed in 1956, the WIV is overseen by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, an institution reporting directly to the Chinese Communist Party’s State Council. The WIV “has engaged in classified research, including laboratory animal experiments, on behalf of the Chinese military since at least 2017,” according to the State Department.

In a statement to the Washington Examiner, University of Minnesota spokesman Jake Ricker insisted the school and the Hormel Institute have no “formal affiliation” with the WIV or Beijing Genomics Institute.

“Our discoveries are peer-reviewed and published in the public domain with appropriate attribution to those who contributed to each study,” Ricker said. “Research is conducted with the full commitment of the Hormel Institute and the university to compliance with federal disclosure, security, export controls, and sanctions rules.”

To Brian Cavanaugh, a former White House National Security Council member, U.S. entities should not be collaborating at all with the WIV. The Hormel Institute’s work with the WIV researchers is concerning, he said.

“The Wuhan Institute of Virology has direct ties to China’s People’s Liberation Army,” Cavanaugh told the Washington Examiner. “The Hormel Institute is helping a foreign adversary.”

Meanwhile, the Hormel Institute has other China ties that have drawn scrutiny. Its former executive director, Dr. Zigang Dong, resigned in 2019 after 18 years in the role.

That’s because Dong came under FBI investigation for his “possible failure to report foreign backing when applying for grants,” the Austin Daily Herald reported.

Dong now works at China’s Zhengzhou University, where he continues to collaborate with researchers from the Hormel Institute, records show. Dong also established the China-US (Henan) Hormel Cancer Institute, a Chinese research facility partnered with the Hormel Institute, according to a 2012 press release.

“The collaboration brings more resources, it brings more collaboration in terms of what that scientific data is showing,” Walz, a then-congressman in 2012, said of the partnership.

China’s government kept the Walz-endorsed partnership afloat with annual funding, according to an archived version of the Chinese institute’s website.

The Harris-Walz campaign did not respond to a request for comment.
