Who Is on Kash Patel’s ‘Enemies List?’ Pam Bondi Confronted Over FBI Pick

Jan 16, 2025

By Ewan Palmer

Newsweek is a Trust Project member

Pam Bondi, President-elect Donald Trump's pick for attorney general, addressed questions about the so-called "enemies list" compiled by the potential next FBI director, Kash Patel, during her confirmation hearing on Wednesday.

While responding toquestions from the Senate Judiciary Committee, Bondi assured that the dozens of namesappearing in Patel's 2023 book, Government Gangsters, would not be unfairly targeted by the Department of Justice under the Trump administration.

Newsweek has contacted Bondi, Patel and the Trump transition team for comment via email.

Why It Matters

Trump's decision to tap Patel to replace Christopher Wray as FBI director has raised concerns that the president-elect might use the federal agency to target political opponents as an act of retaliation.

Patel, a former federal prosecutor and staunch Trump supporter, has publicly expressed a desire to confront the "deep state" in government.

Bondi, the former Florida attorney general, was questionedabout Patel's "enemies list" during her confirmation hearing on Wednesday.

Democratic Senator Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island asked whether Bondi would have hired someone to the Florida attorney general's office if they had an "enemies list."

Bondi pointed out the senator was referring to the dozens of names compiled by Patel in his 2023 book. Bondi stated she does not believe Patel has an "enemies list" and that such a list would never be enforced in the Department of Justice.

She added that no one will be prosecuted or investigated because they are a political opponent under the new administration.

Patel hasmentioned targeting "conspirators" in government and the media during a December 2023 appearance on Steve Bannon's War Room podcast.

Patel wrote in Government Gangsters that his list of "members of the executive branch deep state" working against Trump was not exhaustive. The list includes longtime political opponents of Trump, such as President Joe Biden, 2016 election rival Hillary Clinton, and former FBI Director and "Russiagate" special counsel Robert Mueller.

Former Attorney General Bill Barr, who resigned in December 2020 after Trump continued to push false voter fraud claims even after the Department of Justice said there was no evidence, is also included in the list.

The 2023 list resurfaced in December when Trump announced Patel as his pick for FBI director.

On Monday, Democratic Representative Brendan Boyle of Pennsylvania called on Biden to issue preemptive blanket pardons to those on Patel's list during his final days in office.

Who Is on Kash Patel 'Enemies List'?

What People Are Saying

Pam Bondi at Wednesday's confirmation hearing: "There will never be an enemies list within the Department of Justice."

Democratic Vermont Senator Peter Welchposted on X: "Pam Bondi promised me during our hearing today that 'No one will be prosecuted or investigated because they are a political opponent.' I'm going to hold her to that if she's confirmed.

Kash Patel, during a December 2023 appearance on War Room: "We will go out and find the conspirators not just in government but in the media. We're going to come after you whether it's criminally or civilly. We'll figure that out."

Democratic Representative Brendan Boyle of Pennsylvania in a January 13 statement:"Donald Trump and Kash Patel have made their intentions unmistakably clear. Patel's so-called 'enemies list,' brazenly published in his own book, is a blueprint for political retribution against those who stood firm in defense of our democracy and the rule of law. This is no hypothetical threat—it's a dangerous roadmap for the abuse of power."

The FBI declined to comment.

What Happens Next

A date for Patel's confirmation hearing for the role of FBI director has yet to be confirmed.

Bondi, who replaced former Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz as the attorney general nominee, is not expected to face significant issues securing Senate confirmation to lead the Department of Justice.

The list of who Donald Trump has 'pledged to punish' — according to one of his targets

David Badash November 06, 2024

Vice President Kamala Harris, now the former Democratic presidential nominee, frequently said on the campaign trail: “On day one if elected, Donald Trump would walk into that office with an enemy’s list. When elected, I will walk in with it to do list.”

Donald Trump is now President-elect and, according to Politico, he has “a lengthy inventory of people he’s pledged to punish.”

“For years, Trump has peppered his speeches and social media posts with vengeful calls for his political opponents, his critics and members of the media to be prosecuted, locked up, deported and even executed. In the waning weeks of the 2024 campaign, he escalated those promises of retaliation to a fever pitch,” Politico reports Wednesday. “Now that he’s won, he has both a popular mandate — and the power — to begin implementing his platform of punishment.”

Trump “will be emboldened by a Supreme Court ruling that grants presidents broad immunity from criminal accountability after they leave office. And he is expected to be surrounded by aides more willing to dispense with norms to carry out his wishes.”

Far-right influencers are looking to Miami as a venue to pursue "long-promised charges of a 'grand conspiracy'" against President Donald Trump’s perceived adversaries, according to a New York Times report.

The influencers have even found a federal prosecutor there— Jason A. Reding Quiñones, Trump-appointed United States Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, who was sworn into office in August 2025 and is currently a central figure in a high-profile investigation into a 2017 intelligence community assessment regarding Russian election interference.

As for their alleged 'grand conspiracy,' the Times explains that its theory is "still unsupported by the evidence."

"A cabal of Democrats and 'deep-state' operatives, possibly led by former President Barack Obama, has worked to destroy Mr. Trump in a yearslong plot spanning the inquiry into his 2016 campaign to the charges he faced after leaving office," the Times explains.

Last week, however, Reding Quiñones issued over two dozen subpoenas, including to officials who took part in the inquiry into ties between Russia and Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign, according to people with direct knowledge of the matter, the Times writes.

Among the recipients include familiar Trump foils: James R. Clapper Jr., the former director of national intelligence; Peter Strzok, a former F.B.I. counterintelligence agent who helped run the Russia investigation; and Lisa Page, a former lawyer at the bureau.

The Florida investigation currently focuses on a "January 2017 intelligence community assessment about Russian interference in the 2016 election, particularly the role played by John O. Brennan, the former C.I.A. director, in drafting the document," the Times says.

The Brennan investigation started "after criminal referrals to the Justice Department by top Trump intelligence officials," the Times writes, and was assigned to David Metcalf, the U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, "who was given special authority to scrutinize and possibly prosecute Mr. Brennan, according to four people with knowledge of his actions who requested anonymity to discuss an open matter."

Metcalf held senior Justice Department positions during the first Trump administration.

The Brennan case, however, was transfered from Metcalf to Reding Quiñones, "as part of a decision to greatly expand the scope of the Brennan investigation into other, unspecified activities, according to two people with knowledge of the situation," the Times explains.

The Florida subpoenas, the Times explains, "seek documents or communications related to the intelligence community assessment from July 1, 2016, through Feb. 28, 2017, according to people familiar with them. It commands the recipients to provide them to prosecutors in Miami by Nov. 20."

Despite the dubious nature of these investigations, the Times says, they do have one thing on its side.

"Reding Quiñones, a military veteran, has pursued his mandate to hunt down Mr. Trump’s foes with a gung-ho attitude that has endeared him to the president and the small but influential cadre of loyalists pushing hardest for prosecutions," notes the Times.

https://www.alternet.org/2020/08/putins-useful-idiot-this-gop-senator-is-promoting-a-russian-disinformation-campaign-to-help-get-trump-reelected}:

Senator Ron Johnson is basically using his position as chair of the Homeland Security Committee to do what Trump was impeached for asking Ukraine to do—smear Joe Biden based on his efforts to end corruption in that country during his tenure as Obama’s vice president.

Even Republican Senators Richard Burr and Marco Rubio are warning Johnson that his efforts could aid the disinformation campaign that Moscow is spearheading against Biden. As Ryan Goodman and Asha Rangappa document, Johnson seems to be getting his information from three sources.

There are three channels of Russian disinformation that have apparently affected Sen. Johnson’s Ukraine-related investigations.

Channel 1. Russian-linked Ukrainian operatives communicating directly with Sen. Johnson and his staff.

Channel 2. Russian-linked Ukrainian operatives spreading disinformation via media outlets, which have been picked up and expressly relied upon by Sen. Johnson.

Channel 3. Russian-linked Ukrainian operatives providing information via “Team [Rudy] Giuliani.”

That is bad enough. But then this week,Johnson actually said the quiet parts out loud.

“The more that we expose of the corruption of the transition process between Obama and Trump, the more we expose of the corruption within those agencies, I would think it would certainly help Donald Trump win reelection and certainly be pretty good, I would say, evidence about not voting for Vice President Biden,” Johnson said in a little-noticed Tuesday interview with Minneapolis-based radio hosts Jon Justice and Drew Lee.

In other words, the senator from Wisconsin is engaging in a Russian disinformation campaign, which he admits is designed to damage Biden and help Trump get reelected. Johnson is doing so four years after he joined Biden in demanding that Ukraine “press ahead with urgent reforms to the Prosecutor General’s office and judiciary.”

All of that raises questions about whether Johnson is acting as a “useful idiot” on Vladimir Putin’s behalf. But it is important to keep in mind that the senator isn’t the sharpest knife in the drawer. After all, this is the guy who turned a joke from Lisa Page into a claim that he had an “informant” who said that there was a “secret society” of FBI agents meeting off site. The inference was that they were plotting to destroy the Trump presidency. He is also the senator who issued a report, wrote an op-ed, and held a hearing to make the unconscionable claim that Medicaid is responsible for fueling the opioid epidemic.

For Johnson, there doesn’t seem to be an Alex Jones-type conspiracy theory that he won’t peddle. Most often, he jumps in and gets pilloried for failing to do an even basic review of facts. That’s why, whether he intends to or not, he is certainly playing the role of being Putin’s useful idiot.

Here’s what the Daily Beast interview with Lisa Page tells us

Written by Alex Henderson December 9, 2019

After two years of silence, former FBI attorney Lisa Page recently spoke out about President Donald Trump’s relentless attacks on her in an interview with the Daily Beast’s Molly Jong-Fast. And Jong-Fast, in a December 8 op-ed for the Beast, explains that the interview has been receiving even more attention than she anticipated.

“I thought the story of having your life ruined by Donald Trump might resonate with readers,” Jong-Fast notes, “but I had no idea just how much Lisa Page’s words would penetrate the sea of internet content.”

Page, who served as a special counsel to former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, has been a frequent target of the far right for exchanging texts with Peter Strzok (a former FBI counterintelligence official) that were critical of Trump. For two years, Page didn’t responded to those attacks. But she broke her silence with the Daily Beast interview.

“This was a genuinely endangered woman trusting me with her story, a story that had been distorted endlessly by the defenders of the president of the United States,” Jong-Fast asserts, noting that while much of the attention her interview received was positive, some of Trump’s lapdogs in the right-wing media have been furious.

“The bad-faith criticism was the most fun,” Jong-Fast observes. “My favorite bit of bad-faith criticism was from a man once described by comedian Jordan Carlos as ‘so stupid that if he looked up in a rainstorm he would drown’: Brian Kilmeade of ‘Fox & Friends.’ I couldn’t even believe my luck. It was one of the most truly beautiful moments of my life, having my journalistic chops questioned by the guy who once tried to roast a marshmallow with his bare hands.”

As Jong-Fast sees it, being lambasted by Trump’s sycophants at Fox News is a badge of honor: the fact that her interview with Page really got under their skin shows that she did her job well. The criticism from Fox News’ SeanHannitywas especially pathetic: Jong-Fast notes that Hannity “offered to ‘educate the journalists’ — I think he means me! — and the so-called mob in the media.”

Jong-Fast adds, “Male Fox News anchors and execs don’t have the best record when it comes to ‘alone time’ with women. Think of Bill O’Reilly, Eric Bolling and Roger Ailes. But my favorite thoughts came from Tucker Carlson’s white power hour, where I was described as ‘an anti-Trump journalist who often mocks the president on Twitter.’ If Tucker Carlson is mad at you, you’re probably doing something right.”

Jong-Fast, however, concludes her op-ed on a melancholy note — lamenting that Page has been attacked so vehemently by the far right.

“I was happy to tell Lisa’s story to talk about the human cost of Trumpism,” Jong-Fast explains. “But honestly, I wish there hadn’t been a story to tell. So does she.”
