David Yale, Chancellor
c. [[1555]] – [[1626]]
[[David Yale alias Lloyd]] (died 1626): Chancellor of Chester — [[Person 2]]
- Description: Almost certainly an illegitimate son of [[John Wyn Yale]], heir of Plâs yn Iâl and elder brother of Thomas Yale, David followed his uncle Thomas to Queens' College, Cambridge in 1555, becoming a Fellow there ([[1565]]–81). He proceeded to LL.D. in [[1579]] and in [[1578]] succeeded to his uncle Thomas's prebend at St Asaph. He became prebendary of Chester in 1582 and chancellor of the Chester diocese in 1587, holding that post for over two decades until approximately [[1608]]. He also co-administered the see of Bangor during the vacancy between bishops Nicholas Robinson and Hugh Bellot in [[1585]]. In [[1598]] he made significant land purchases from the Erddigs of Erthig, retaining Plas Grono, near Wrexham — the estate that would become the family seat until [[1721]]. He is the direct patrilineal ancestor of Elihu Yale, making him Elihu's great-great-grandfather.
