Sabinian
5. Sabinian (604–606)
The Reversal — First Stress Test of Gregory's Legacy
- Description: Sabinian was Gregory's immediate successor and in several respects his institutional opposite. Where Gregory had distributed grain freely from church estates to Rome's poor and refugee population, Sabinian charged for it — drawing intense public anger. He reportedly reversed several of Gregory's pastoral and administrative policies. His death in February 606 was so unpopular that his funeral procession had to be rerouted outside the city walls to avoid hostile crowds. His short and turbulent pontificate reveals that Gregory's legacy was not yet politically stable — it needed reinforcement by later successors to become entrenched.
