Merchant Apprenticeship in London and Rise in Baltic Trade
- Description: As a young man, Eaton left Buckinghamshire for London to train as a merchant apprentice. He built a successful commercial enterprise trading with Baltic seaports — Norway, Sweden, Poland, Prussia, and Denmark — and established himself as a senior figure in England's northern European trade network. His success earned him election as deputy governor of the Eastland Company, the Crown-chartered trading monopoly founded in 1579 specifically to challenge the Hanseatic League's dominance over Baltic commerce. The Eastland Company imported timber and tar for shipbuilding, flax, linen, and grain, and exported primarily English cloth — making it one of the most strategically vital trading bodies in the kingdom.
