Gadamer: Event of Understaning = interpretation in language
Hadot: sharp difference between philosophical discourse and philosophical life:

“The act of living in a genuinely philosophical way thus corresponds to an order of reality totally different from that of philosophical discourse” (Hadot, 1995, p. 268).

(Hadot closer to Ricoeur on distanciation of text as en route to understanding)

Metaphor and misunderstanding:

Gadamer: metaphoric transformation as the way conceptual understanding proceeds:

Hadot: on varying meanings of Heraclitus’ expression, “phusis kruptesthi philei,” (“nature loves to hide, “To write the history of its reception is to write the history of a series of misunderstandings, but creative misunderstandings, insofar as these three little words have served to express, but also perhaps caused to appear, ever new perspectives on reality”(Hadot, 2004/2006, p. 316).
