Course description

HON 1099: “How do you Know?” (2 Credits) Prerequisite: membership in Honors Program

Class will meet Tuesdays 4:00 – 6:00 pm at the President’s house.

Students in this course will wrestle with important questions about what knowledge is and how it works, such as, What does it mean to know something to be true? How does knowledge work differently in different fields? How is what we know related to what we believe or feel? How is what we know related to what we think is morally right? How does theoretical knowledge differ from practical knowledge? How is knowledge limited (or not)? How is knowledge connected to or different from information, meaning, and wisdom?

Philosophers, poets, historians, theologians, neuroscientists, and others have struggled with such questions for of years, so we won’t find any easy answers. However, in working through such questions from different perspectives, students will attain knowledge (whatever that is!) of different ways of knowing, the skills to apply different ways of knowing to different situations, and the attributes of informed, habitual examination and questioning of fundamental ideas. Readings will come from a variety of disciplines, and students will pursue individual and group projects that will structure their investigation of these questions. A detailed syllabus will be provided for the first half of the course, but students will share responsibility for the shape of the course in the second half.
