Irrational numbers cannot be written as fractions or decimals because the number of the decimal places is infinite and there is no reoccurring pattern of digits within the number. For example, pi ᴫ begins with 3. 1 4 1 5 9 2 and continues without terminating or repeating, so pi ᴫ is an irrational number.
