Dilution

<p>Thrombocytopenia can occur after an exchange transfusion because the relatively large volume of platelet-poor transfused blood can dilute the concentration of circulating platelets. However, the condition for which the exchange transfusion was performed (eg, erythroblastosis fetalis) also can result in thrombocytopenia.</p>
