Watt

“A watt is a unit of power that measures the rate of energy transfer. It is named after James Watt, a Scottish inventor and engineer who improved the steam engine in the 18th century.

In electrical terms, a watt is the amount of power produced or consumed by a device when a current of one ampere flows through it with a voltage of one volt across it. This means that a watt is equal to one joule of energy per second, or one kilogram-meter squared per second cubed.

For example, if you have a light bulb that draws 0.1 ampere of current from a 120-volt outlet, you can calculate its power in watts by multiplying the current and the voltage: 0.1 x 120 = 12 watts. This means that the light bulb converts 12 joules of electrical energy into heat and light every second.

Some common units that are derived from the watt are the milliwatt (one thousandth of a watt), the kilowatt (one thousand watts), and the megawatt (one million watts). These units are used to measure different levels of power, such as the output of a radio transmitter, the capacity of a power plant, or the consumption of a household.”
