2012 Workshop on Accelerator Operations

"The objective of the workshop is to bring together people that operate accelerators and to help them exchange ideas about accelerator operation, organization, maintenance, documentation, software, control room layout, remote operation, and safety. It also serves the accelerator operations community as a means to establish benchmarks by facilitating comparisons of methods, efficiencies, costs, reliability, beam quality and other performance measures. In addition specialized requirements for operating refrigeration plants for super conducting accelerators, or for operating accelerators like spallation neutron sources or free electron lasers are discussed."

A lot of people from CERN participated in this workshop.  It wasn't all about CERN but it seemed to be all about particle accelerators.

abstract titles include:

Another title that stands out is "Promethean Exchange: Bringing Expert Tools & Diagnostic Experience to Operations".

And another titled, "ISIS - Continued Operations 1984 – 2012 and beyond", with a description which reads

"ISIS is one of the world’s most productive pulsed spallation neutron sources. We support a national and international community of more than 2000 scientists in the fields of physics, chemistry, materials science, geology, engineering and biology. Operating a 24/7 regime we currently schedule 5 cycles of approximately 30 days each and routinely accelerate beam to two targets simultaneously by way of time slotting. An overview of ISIS operations will be presented."

Other things were listed which seemingly had nothing to do with CERN like "RIKEN Nishina Center’s Response to Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Disaster" and "Hurricane Isabel's Impact on Jefferson Lab".

Jefferson Lab is one of like approximately 17 laboratories in the US created by the Department of Energy.  This workshop took place at another one of those DEO national labs, SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory.  Other noteable DOE national labs that are discussed at the workshop include Los Alamos.

The Manhattan Project was eventually overseen by the Atomic Energy Commission (AEC).  In 1977 AEC and a bunch of other agencies were consolidated into the Department of Energy. (source)

Department Of Energy influenced genomics and seems to have been instrumental in the Human Genome Project. (source)

The research into the Human genome Project is sold to us as looking out for out best interest, even though people like Craig Venter were involved.  Today we see the emergence of the"Synthetic Human Genome Project".
