It's called the "Stanford Prison Experiment".

Apparently it is something that also came up in a similar experiment, the Milgram Experiment which tested people for how much (perceived) pain they would willingly cause to another person:

The other day I saw what appeared to be a 4 year old boy wearing a mask with his father in Walmart. It broke my heart and I was glad I didn't grow up in a world that forced me to do that.
