High Council
Lord Commander - The chief of the Order, elected from amongst its ranks of anointed knights. Any member currently holding any other council position is not eligible to become Lord Commander. This individual has the power to convene the council on any topic, command its forces in combat, speak for it in times of peace, serve as the final arbitrator of disputes within the Order, and can cast the final (and ocaasionally tie-breaking) vote in the council or of the order as a whole. The Lord Commander holds a ceremonial staff of office while the council is in session, having surrendered his sword, which rests on the councl table throughout the duration of his term in office.
Castellan of Skyreach - The keeper of the ancient seat of the order and the Vale Lands that surround it, responsible for its upkeep and defense. The Castellan acts as the second in command, and speaker for the Order in the absence of the Lord Commander. Typically an older veteran of the Order, sometimes even former Lord Commanders who go into semi-retirement. The Castellan is also seen as the guardian of the heritage of the Order.
Sergeant At Arms - The most senior non-annointed member of the order, typically a more seasoned individual who never achieved the rank of knight, but who is in charge of the Sergeants, and acts as chief steward of the Order. Notable for being the only non-knight allowed to carry a sword, which they place on the table as do the other council members. The Sergeant At Arms nontheless wears no sword belt, and so must carry their sword.
Grand Herald/Troubador - The keeper of the histories, laws, and tales fo the Order, who also acts as chief information officer. The Grand Herald oversees the keeping of the Skyreach Archives, and also works as a public face of the Order in many official capacities. Since the Veldt War and inclusion of many more Au'Kael cultural practices, the role of Herald is now regularly held by Bards, who instead take the title of Troubador.
Champion of the Order - The winner of the Great Tourney, who shows prowess in arms and arts. Open to all competitors, it is a way a more common members of the Order, or even outsiders, can speak for the the mass of other members, and typically is a way for younger voices to have a say in council matters.
- Paladins - Any currently acclaimed Paladins present when the council meets are welcome to sit in on sessions and add their voices to debates. But they do not have a vote in decisions.
- Sworn Sword and Sworn Shield - Technically not members of the council, but officers of it, who nontheless are present at every meeting, although they technically wait beyond the chamber threshhold, so as to hear all debates and be summoned at need, but not be sitting in the council. These are Order members who stand as guard and as witness to the proceedings, acting more as ushers and secretaries in modern times. They attend to the needs of the council, and help organize deliberations, events, and business to be conducted. By tradition, the Sworn Sword was the Order's Justice, responsible in ancient times for conducting any punitive punishments agains criminal members or enemies. The Sworn Shield served as a personal guard to the members while in the chamber, taking responsibility for their safety and security. They explicidly can not speak in council unless officially summoned to do so by the members.
