Cidra

The word "cidra" is a catch-all for types of drinks made by fermenting assorted fruits left over at harvest times. The drinks can vary widely based on what proportions and types of fruit go into them. The drink was originally made to preserve fruit that was about to go bad, or otherwise not fit for eating or drying, and creates a typically very sweet, low alcohol drink. Sometimes it is flavored with herbs, spices or honey. Seen as a seasonal treat, there are usually parties when the first casks of the drinks are broached. Until modern bottling and preserving technology, Cidra was not bottled or stored for long periods, and was drunk fresh. Most all fruit that was not dried or eaten fresh was made into cidra.
