Present
In the aftermath of the Veldt War, the Veldt region and several smaller areas (Tyre and the cities of the Littoral), were granted a degree of regional autonomy as part of the general settlement. Further, Au'Kaels were granted guaranteed protetion under the Alliance system. And the city of Tyre was transformed into an open city and free trade zone, with local authority vested in the city government. The Swords of the Sion were retained in the region as police and peacekeepers, with all remaining Kael and Alliance forces withdrawn.
Many hundreds of thousands of Au'Kael were killed in the conflict, along with members of other groups and collateral damage, both in the Veldt and especially in Tyre and the cities. During reconstruction, significant amounts of infrastructure were revitalized, and Tyre was able to transform itself into an industrial powerhouse of eatern Kael. This event was known as the Tyrian Miracle, and soon the city boasted a vibrant economic and artistic culture, being a very cosmopolitan place. It even saw the founding of the now famous Ascension OC team.
Afyon was also rebuilt very rapidly. Many of the old buildings and architecture were preserved as best was possible. But many additional ammenities and infrastructure were expanded. Old neighborhoods of cramped streets were redesigned to make them more open and logical patterned. Projects like the Longstrand Street, the Canal Park, the Sistern project, and new Depot outside the city were all products of this effort. The city thus had a lower population density, as many residents also continued to live in the much-expanded Warrens.
But while many Au'Kael looked to rebuild their lives, many more were disheartened by the war, and took to leaving their homelands, accelerating the trend of urbanization and abandonment of the wilds. Tyre, Jaya, and other littoral cities received many more new residents, and a second wave of diaspora occured. Many went to their distant kinsbirds in Corvea, and many more trickled into the cities and nations to the west, being incoporated to the sedentary, urban populations. Many Au'Kael lament this as a second loss of culture, as the nomadic ways seem to be in severe decline.
As of today, there are still many traveling bands, traders, and pastroalists who wander the Veldt. But the vast majority of Au'Kael populations now live abroad, and are found throughout the continent. But a new trend that has begun in recent years is that Au'Kael, during their adolescent first migrations, will often return to the Veldt to spend a season or a year living, working, and wandering, before returning to assume adult life in their homes.
