Trigonometric Parallax
Is the only direct method for determining distances to nearby astronomical objects by amounting to triangulation from two different observing points.
Current ground-based equipment, allow to measure parallax to within a few hundredths of an arc second. Parallax measurements are therefore useful for the few thousand nearest stars. They are a starting point for a very complex system of determining distances to astronomical objects.
