Haldir was the son of Halmir and Chieftain of the Haladin in Brethil. He married Glóredhel of the House of Hador and they had a son named Handir. He also fostered their nephews Húrin and Huor during their childhood years.^[1]

Haldir joined the Union of Maedhros and led a force of the Haladin in the disastrous Nirnaeth Arnoediad. Fingon attempted a retreat across Anfauglith covered by Haldir, but he was slain, with most of his Men.^[2]

News of his death caused Glóredhel to die of grief.^[3] He was succeeded by his son Handir as the Chieftain of the Haladin.
