W.D. Switzer came from Missoula in the comapny of three others by horse and cart over the Mullan road, arriving in Cheney 20 September 1880. He purchased lots on First Street and erected a building for the Switzer Bros. Pioneer Drug Store of Cheney.

He ordered a well selected stock of drugs, medicines, paints, oils, and window glass from Hodge Davis & Co., also stationary, school books, etc. from J.K. Gill & Co. all out of Portland. The goods were shipped via The Dalles and Walla Walla which included some five changes from steamer to rail and vice versa, onsuming so much time that Mr. Switzer was obliged to order them stored in Walla Walla till spring. They were then hauled by wagons to Cheney when his building, having been completed, the goods were put upon the shelves and the Pioneer Drug Store was opened for business. Mr. Switzer's brother, Fred, arrived from Nebraska in the fall of '81 and in 1882, W.D. purchased his interest in the business. The Pioneer Drug Store building was burned to the ground in the fire of April 1888 [1889] and much of the stock of goods; Mr. Switzer also suffered a heavy loss of goods in the fire of February 1889 [1890], but restocked each time. (1904 CFP)

1913-Apr-18: W.D. Switzer has sold his entire stock of drugs, notions, paints, etc. to Spokane parties. While, F.W. Franke, trustee, will have charge of the store and dispose of the goods at a reduced price for thirty days. The balance of the stock will be moved away. Mr. Switzer has conducted a drug store in Cheney for thirty years, and will be greatly missed among us as one of the business men. On account of poor health he deemed it best to sell. His store building will be for rent after thirty days.

May 1913: Spokane parties have bought out W.D. Switzer's entire stock of drugs, notions, paints, and oils.
