1969-01        Cheney Medical Center opens at 19 N. 7th St.

The story starts in 1961 when Dr. John Murphy came to Cheney soon after the death of Dr. William Orlob. Dr. Murphy set up practice at 115 College Ave while Dr. Wilfred Gamon and Dr. J. Presely Caldwell were located in a building at the SE corner of College and 4th. Dr. Caldwell died in a swimming accident in 1963 at Williams Lake. Soon after Caldwell's death Dr. Elwynn 'Al' Hasse joined Dr. Gamon's practice. It was Dr. Hasse's idea that the 3 physicians join together and build a medical center in Cheney. They purchased land at the NE corner of N. 7th and Elm Streets. Construction began in 1968 and the center opened in January 1969 at 19 N. 7th.While the three doctors operated from the same building each kept his own separate practice and clients. In 1979 Dr. John Murphy retired due to multiple sclerosis. Dr. Cain joined the practice in 1979. Dr. Hasse left the center in 1982. Joining the practice July 11, 1983 were Dr. Charles Hough and Dr. P.Z. Pearce.

1970- The old infirmary was demolished. EWSC made arrangements with the Cheney Medical Center at 19 North 7th Street for student health services, rendering the infirmary building surplus. As it was considered to be temporary, it was deemed unusable.

1983-08-08: The new Urgent Care Clinic of Cheney Medical Center will begin operation on Monday, September 19, 1983. The clinic is designed to care for acute medical problems and injuries and for the stabilization of emergency problems requiring hospitalization.

1985-The Cheney Medical Center, dominant health care deliverer in the community for the past 17 years, entered a new phase last week when owners Dr. Wilfred Gamon and Enda Murphy signed over the center's deed to P.Z. Pearce and Charles Hough, both practicing physicians at the center.
