Safeway Store Completely New

After being closed for ten days for complete remodeling, the Safeway store at Cheney opened yesterday morning with what might literally be termed a brand new store. All of the store's fixtures and equipment had been replaced, depth of the sales and display space had been increased, and the quarters had been redecorated inside and out.

A complete new refrigeration system has been installed, including a separate dairy cooler unit. New and larger meat display cases, more compact and convenient grocery serve-yourself counters and two new checking lanes are among the features, the latter making possible checking out customers at twice the former rate.

The fixtures are all finished in a green enamel, the same color being used on tile wall covering, with upper walls in ivory. An intercommunication system has been installed, making it possible for checkers to summon additional merchandise from stock rooms quickly. A new oil floor furnace provides heat.

The store is under the supervision of Robert Redding, who has been the local manager for five years.

1953-10-16: Cheney's Safeway store is to undergo extensive remodeling next week, according to Harold Foos, manager. The store will be closed from Monday, October 19 until approximately Monday, October 26, to allow for remodeling work. Work will include a large frozen food section, better facilities for fresh fruits and vegetables and general improvements.

1953-10-30 - With the store completely remodeled and redecorated, the Cheney Safeway is holding a grand reopening this weekend.

Among the latest conveniences and facilities added are new refrigerated produce stands to keep vegetables at their peak and goodness.

In addition, the latest type eye-level fixtures have been installed, and open-top, easily accessible ice cream and frozen food cases have been added.

Modern check stands make for faster service.

"other surprises we have planned for our grand opening," said Howard Foos, Cheney Safeway manager, "are free groceries every hour all day Friday and Saturday. Then, too, a Westinghouse electric toaster will be given away Saturday."

"This is just another step in Safeway's remodeling and modernization program to provide the public with the most modern and up-to-date food centers in the Northwest."

1957-05-17 - A request by Safeway stores for a license to sell beer and wine for off-premise consumption was discussed at Tuesday's city council meeting.

Representatives of the Cheney taverns were present headed by Bill Lee, to protest the granting of the license.

The tavern owners main objection is that it would be harmful to their businesses. The state liquor board will have the final decision on the issuance of the license.

1962-06-15: Safeway to build new market here. Construction of a new Safeway store in Cheney will begin next month, with completion scheduled for January of next year, it was announced this week by L.M. Pringle, Spokane Division manager for Safeway stores.

The supermarket will be located on recently acquired property across Second Street from the Post Office.

The 11,000-square-foot structure, which will replace the existing store at First and F streets, will be situated on the rear of the site and will front on G Street, Pringle reported. It will feature a ridge roof design and will be of masonry block construction. The ceiling will be finished with painted gypsum board and will have exposed wood beams.
