D. Faith = Profession
Goal: Show from Scripture that genuine saving faith is naturally expressed in open confession/profession of Christ.
1. Core "faith + profession" passages
- Romans 10:9–10
If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.
* Faith (heart-belief) and profession (mouth-confession) are tightly joined in one saving response.
* The same Christ we trust inwardly, we acknowledge outwardly.
- Romans 10:13
For "everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved."
* "Calling on the name of the Lord" is faith expressed verbally.
* This is profession in prayer – the outward cry of the believing heart.
- Matthew 10:32–33
So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven,
but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven.
* Openly acknowledging Christ before others (profession) is the expected fruit of true faith.
- Luke 12:8–9
And I tell you, everyone who acknowledges me before men, the Son of Man also will acknowledge before the angels of God,
but the one who denies me before men will be denied before the angels of God.
* Parallel to Matthew 10:32–33, reinforcing the link between faith and public confession.
- 2 Corinthians 4:13
Since we have the same spirit of faith according to what has been written, "I believed, and so I spoke," we also believe, and so we also speak.
* Paul quotes Psalm 116:10 to show the pattern: faith → speech.
* Genuine believing naturally produces verbal confession.
- Hebrews 4:14
Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.
* The writer assumes that Christians have a "confession" – a public profession tied to their faith.
- Hebrews 10:23
Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.
* Faith rests on God’s faithfulness and continues to hold fast its confession.
- 1 Timothy 6:12–13
Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.
* Timothy’s "good confession" is closely connected to "the faith" and eternal life.
2. How this supports "Faith = Profession"
- The New Testament repeatedly links believing and confessing/acknowledging/calling:
- We believe in the heart → we confess with the mouth (Romans 10:9–10).
- We believe, therefore we speak (2 Corinthians 4:13).
- True disciples acknowledge Christ before men (Matthew 10:32; Luke 12:8).
- Churches and believers are urged to "hold fast" their confession (Hebrews 4:14; 10:23).
- Profession is not a separate work added to faith, but the natural, outward expression of real faith.
3. Suggested structure under this thought
You might want child thoughts like:
- "Key Verses: Faith and Profession" – linking the passages above.
- "False Profession vs. True Faith" – to contrast empty words with genuine heart-belief (cf. Matthew 7:21).
- "Public Confession (Baptism, Witnessing)" – practical ways faith expresses itself.
This will let you show that saving faith has a voice – it confesses Christ before God and people – without turning profession into a separate work that earns salvation.
