The design methods movement

design methods movement

a movement of designers focussing on how design is done as an expert domain

came out of scientific management theory and the decision theory approach by Herbert Simon 'Sciences of the Artificial" - a rational basis for selecting optimal design solutions to complex problems (in theory a set of rules that AI could resolve design decisions without human interference).

Herbert Simon - design 'bounded rationality" "satisficing"

Also involved in the movement:

Christopher Alexander (pattern language)

John Chris Jones (design methods)

Peter Rowe (design thinking)

Notes from reading: Cameron Tonkinwise "The Grammar of design thinking: the histories and promises of socio-material practice remaking"
