Method involves constructing task scenarios from a system specification or early prototype and then role play (or ‘walk through’) the part of a user working with that interface. Issues are identified as part of the activity to inform the design or implementation needs. Aims to assess usability. Goal oriented process.

Needs a system specification and task breakdown is required to a fine level of detail with testers knowledgable about the design i.e. conducted by system designers (and/or operations or users although not typical of original method).

High validity - the walkthrough process is structured around specific questions that embody cognitive psychology theory.
