Rule 5 Scenario 1: Let requst too early
Q: What if a let request is made too early?
A: No let given. However, if referee believes Lynn could have reached the ball and played it, let given or perhaps award a point.
.
Paul hits a hard shot waist high. Perhaps thinking of passing Lynn.
Lynn has a fair view of the ball.
Lynn asks for a let.
The ball is well short of Lynn.
There is no let for view, access, or swing.
For ball flight, the let should be requested just before the ball could have been played. No let in this case.
Timing is key. Lynn knows that when the ball is within reach, Paul will be taking away a front wall shot. A sure point.
Paul is the prior striker, so being in the front third is not required for the point.
A referee may be lenient on the timing, and if convinced that Lynn would have a play on the ball, may award a let or point to Lynn.
