National Security Act Amendments

The National Military Establishment was renamed the "Department of Defense" on August 10, 1949, and absorbed the three cabinet-level military departments, in an amendment to the original 1947 law.^[18]

The renaming is alleged to be due to the Establishment's abbreviation, NME, being pronounced "enemy".^[19]
