Transmembrane protein
Return to Cellular Biology Menu
Transmembrane proteins (TM) are involved in many cell processes, including:
Signal transduction, Substance transport, Cell communication, Protein targeting, Intracellular transport, Membrane trafficking.
TM proteins act as gateways to transport substances across membranes. They often undergo conformational changes to move substances. TM proteins are usually hydrophobic and aggregate and precipitate in water.
TM proteins can be classified according to their functions, including:
- G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs)
- Ion channels
- Transport proteins
- Other types of receptors
TM proteins are common targets for drugs.
