Thyme,cautions

Small amounts used in cooking are generally safe but do not take internally in medicinal doses during pregnancy or if you have liver or kidney disease. Forbidden during pregnancy because of its uterine stimulant properties. Avoid in hyperthyroid conditions. Use cautiously with dryness or Yin deficiency present.

Thyme essential oil has an irritating effect on the skin and mucous membrane because of its high phenol content. Essential oil of white (soft) thyme is the least irritating and should always be used in preference. Internal use should only be in a gelatin capsule with some olive oil. For skin conditions use the oil only in a % dilution with a carrier oil.

Patients sensitive to birch pollen or celery may have a cross-sensitivity to thyme
