B Vitamins - What You Need To Know
Can B Vitamin Deficiencies LITERALLY Make You Go Crazy?
The gut flora produces numerous B vitamins (and weight loss compounds). If B vitamins are low it means the microbiome is unhealthy.
B-Complex: One of the few vitamin categories that has been confirmed in human studies to not only reduce the progression of plaque buildup in the arteries but actually reverse it is B-complex. A 2009 study published in the journal Stroke found that high dose B-complex vitamin supplementation significantly reduces the progression of early-stage subclinical atherosclerosis in healthy individuals.More remarkably, a 2005 study published in the journal Atherosclerosis found a B-vitamin formula decreased the carotid artery thickness in patients at risk for cerebral ischemia. Another possible explanation for these positive effects is the role B-vitamins have in reducing the production of Homocysteine, an artery and otherwise blood vessel scarring amino acid.
If a vitamin B supplement is synthetic, it will most likely be listed as folic acid. To avoid this, choose active B vitamins, which are sold under the following common names :
Thiamine (B1): Thiamine pyrophosphate; Thiamine triphosphate
Riboflavin (B2): Riboflavin-5-phosphate; Flavin mononucleotide (FMN)
Niacin (B3): Nicotinamide (adenine dinucleotide)
Pantothenic acid (B5): Pantethine
Pyridoxine (B6): Pyridoxal-5-phosphate
Folic acid: Folinic acid; 5-methyl tetrahydrofolate
Cobalamin (B12): Methylcobalamin; Adenosylcobalamin
Choline: Phosphatydlcholine
Don’t take B vitamins before bed, they stimulate the nervous system.

Effects on Immune System
There is a strong link between B vitamins and host immune response to infections. Vitamins B1, B2, and B5 control the host immune response through the regulation of energy generation in various immune cells ^[R]. Vitamin B1 deficiency impairs the maintenance of B cells, whereas vitamin B3 regulates the differentiation of T cells, decreases the production of several proinflammatory cytokines, and downregulates transforming growth factor-β gene expression and NF-kB activity ^[R]. Vitamin B5 deficiency causes inflammation through the higher production of proinflammatory mediators ^[RFurthermore, vitamin B5 activates the phagocytic activity of macrophages, enhances the production of IL-6 and TNF-α, and modulates Th1 and Th17 responses ^[R]. Vitamin B6 deficiency leads to lymphocytopenia and excessive Th2 responses and lowers lymphoid tissue weight and antibody responses ^[R]. Vitamin B6 mobilizes to the sites of inflammation where it may serve as a cofactor in pathways producing mediators with anti-inflammatory effects ^[R]. The plasma level of vitamin B6 is inversely associated with several inflammatory biomarkers in population-based investigations ^[R]. Vitamin B9 deficiency causes an impaired immune response and the reduced blastogenic response of T lymphocytes ^[R]. Vitamin B12 maintains the function and proliferation of NK cell and CD8+ T cells. Deficiency in vitamin B12 leads to a reduction in the number of NK cells and IL-6 levels as well as an enhancement of CD4+/CD8+ ratio and TNF-α value ^[R].
There are several experimental and clinical studies indicating the antiviral effects of B vitamins. Patients with HIV had a high prevalence of vitamin B1 deficiency. Vitamin B1 affects HIV infection via non-genomic mechanisms, which may lead to beneficial effects in patients with HIV ^[R]. Vitamin B2 alone or in combination with ulratraviolet light has a potent antiviral effect on a wide range of viruses, such as MERS-CoV ^[R]. Deficiencies in vitamins B6, B9, and B12 render people more susceptible to viral respiratory infections, such as influenza ^[R]. It has been suggested that a vitamin A–vitamin B6 conjugate analog can exert an antiviral effect by regulating transcription and/or replication of various RNA viruses, including coronavirus ^[R].
Effects of Deficiency on Mood
- Depression, vague fears
- Emotional instability
- Decreased ability to cope with problems
- Confusion, forgetfulness
- Irritability, quarrelsome
Conditions Affecting B-vitamin Levels:
- Metformin (used to normalize elevated blood sugar – Type II diabetes; polycystic ovary disease):
- Increases risk of B-12 deficiency
- Some studies show association with lower folate levels
Genetics role:
- 1% of US population have MTHFR - Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase polymorphism
- Associated with lower folate levels
People with MTHFR polymorphism are in pretty good shape if getting folate from food but if you aren’t eating a vitamin B rich diet and are getting folate in the form of folic acid supplements or fortified foods, you many not be able to take that form of folic acid and get it into its metabolically active form.
