Mint and Menthol: A Review of Potential Health Benefits and wider Human effects
Key Physiological Mechanisms Highlighted in the Study
Trigeminal Nerve & TRPM8 Activation:
Menthol and peppermint essential oil act as agonists for TRPM8 (Transient Receptor Potential Melastatin 8) cold-sensing ion channels, which are heavily concentrated along the branches of the trigeminal nerve (\(CN\ V\)).
Perception of Upper Airway Openness:
Rather than physically dilating the anatomical airway tissue, menthol vapor stimulates the mucosal cold receptors of the nasal cavity served by the trigeminal ganglia. This tricks the central nervous system into perceiving a sudden cooling sensation and increased airflow, significantly reducing subjective dyspnea ("air hunger") and creating the sensation of open, clear airways.
Alertness and Cognitive Clarity
Stimulation of the trigeminal network sends ascending neural signals straight to the reticular activating system (RAS) in the brainstem. This sensory input elevates central arousal, resulting in increased subjective alertness, improved reaction time, and reduced mental fatigue
