Pterocarpan

Pterocarpans are a group of compounds that are derivatives of isoflavonoids. They are found in the family Fabaceae.

Pterocarpans are the second largest group of natural isoflavonoids.

They are biologically active and act as phytoalexins, which are substances produced by plants that inhibit pathogens.

Pterocarpans are made up of a tetracyclic ring system possessing benzofuran-benzopyran. They can be described as benzo-pyrano-furano-benzenes.

Pterocarpans are important anti-fungal compounds. They have been found in a large number of species belonging to diverse sub-families of the Leguminosae (Fabaceae)
