Shortleaf pine (Pinus echinata) loves, and is concentrated in, its cooler northern range. Shortleaf pine has the widest range of all the southern yellow pines and grows in 22 States.Still, quality shortleaf timber is confined to Arkansas, eastern Oklahoma and Texas and diminishes in quality and volume when moving away from this region.
Shortleaf pine frequently hybridizes naturally with Loblolly Pine and Pitch Pine where their ranges intersect. These hybrids can make exact identification a challenge.
Artificial hybrids have been produced with shortleaf pine and are of special interest. Crosses with loblolly pine and slash pine offer the opportunity to combine specific qualities of individual species.
Littleleaf disease is the most serious disease effecting shortleaf pine, especially outside the AR, OK, TX timber-belt. Littleleaf disease occurs on poorly drained soils from Virginia to Mississippi and south to the Gulf Coast and dramatically reduces wood quantity and quality in many states.
