Trans

Trans: In reference to geometric isomers, trans means 'on the opposite side of ' and indicates that the larger or more important parts of a molecule are located on the opposite sides of a double bond. Also called E.

Trans is the opposite of cis. The words cis and trans are commonly used when discussing the shapes of fatty acid molcules; the cis forms are made by Nature, whereas the harmful trans forms usually result from oxidation, processing, or hydrogenation.
