Devil's Backbone, Growing

IDEAL GROWING CONDITIONS

Light

Bryophyllum daigremontianum thrives in bright, indirect sunlight. While it can tolerate some direct sunlight, too much can cause the leaves to scorch. A south-facing window is often ideal, but be sure to provide some shade during the hottest part of the day.

Temperature

This plant prefers warm temperatures, ideally between 60°F and 75°F (15°C to 24°C). It is not frost-tolerant, so if you live in a cooler climate, consider growing it indoors or in a greenhouse.

Soil

A well-draining soil mix is crucial for Bryophyllum daigremontianum. A cactus or succulent mix works well, or you can create your own by combining regular potting soil with sand or perlite to improve drainage.

Watering

Watering should be done sparingly. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings to prevent root rot. During the growing season (spring and summer), water more frequently, but reduce watering in the fall and winter when the plant is dormant.

Propagation

One of the most intriguing aspects of Bryophyllum daigremontianum is its ability to propagate from the tiny plantlets that form along the edges of its leaves. These plantlets can be gently removed and placed on the surface of a well-draining soil mix. With minimal care, they will root and grow into new plants.

Common Issues

Pests

While generally pest-resistant, Bryophyllum daigremontianum can occasionally be affected by aphids or mealybugs. Regularly inspect your plant and treat any infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil.

Diseases

Overwatering can lead to root rot, which is the most common issue. Ensure proper drainage and avoid letting the plant sit in water.
