Sinus

Return to Respiratory System Menu

Sinuses are four paired cavities in the head that make mucus that drains out of the nose. The drainage helps keep the nose clean and free of bacteria, allergens, and other germs.

Sinusitis, or sinus infection, occurs when there is an inflammation of the sinuses. Chronic sinusitis causes the sinuses to become inflamed and swollen.
