Longleaf Pine
Constituents:
Longleaf pine is one of the most distinctive tree species in North America and known for the open, park like, native forests. Longleaf pine (Pinus palustris),whose species name means "of the marsh," has been locally referred to as longstraw, hard or heart, pitch, and Georgia pine.
The natural range of longleaf pine includes most of the Atlantic and Gulf Coastal Plains from southeastern Virginia to eastern Texas and south through the northern two-thirds of peninsular Florida. That range has been significantly reduced by urbanization, harvesting with limited replanting or reseeding.
Major Identification Markers: needle cluster of three; cones long at 7"; twigs are stout, orange-brown.
